Advice Needed (changing An Adult/adoptee Dogs Name)
Scarlet replied to Kazhak's topic in General Dog Discussion
I've also had fosters who picked up a new name in a matter of days. Just associate it with something nice. -
A friend walked in to find her daughter suckling with the pups Did she ever get lots of leverage with that one!

Yes they are sensitive souls. Kurrie was fantastic with other dogs and loved cats. He was very social with adults and older children. He had a lot of contact with my niece and loved her but my nephew was a bit much for him - although Kurrie was also getting older by this time and the children both preschoolers. He could never cope with voices raised in anger, even if not directed at him. I don't think he was ever yelled at in his life. He was so smart and loved to please humans. Kurrie was put to sleep at 16yrs with advanced bowel cancer and my son was about 12 months. I ended up with 4 rowdy sons so it didn't seem suitable to get another rough collie but I must admit to thinking of getting a mature rescue in my retirement years.

I had a rough collie for 16 yrs and initially he was a bit sensitive to traffic and I remember sitting with him on street corners while he was a pup. I would take a fold up chair and a book and sit there for ages.He ended up traveling quite a bit on trains, buses and planes and was quite happy to do so. He travelled with me over a lot of NZ and most states in Aust and he ended up just about bomb proof. It was back in the days when no one said anything about dogs on public transport etc so he went most places with me. He had the opportunity to be very well socialised and I think it showed.

I agree with the others offering support. Ask her quite often how the dog is going. She sounds excited about her dog so she may be keen to tell you all about him/her. Mention that you have had a few dogs so if she has any questions don't hesitate to ask. If you keep it friendly and not too intense she may be very receptive and will learn heaps.

Jules there is nothing I can say but know that everyone here on DOL sends their warmest wishes to you. We're all thinking of you so you are not alone.

What Would Your Dog Sound Like If It Could Talk?
Scarlet replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
Maddy would be painful - me first, aren't I pretty, how can you possibly say no to me, Charlie do what I want to. Charlie would be laid back, bordering on special - huh what are we doing now, OK whatever you want, anything you say Maddy. -
I've fostered a mini foxie who could outlast both of my border collies. At least you can carry a small dog home.

My first dog was born and lived in NZ for his fist 2 years and I would often give him a vanilla cone, which he loved. When I moved back to NSW he turned his nose up at cones there - not rich enough for his liking Not sure what its like now but NZ dairy used to be to die for.

Why Is She Being Nasty About My Tenterfield Terrier
Scarlet replied to Harrybegood's topic in General Dog Discussion
Can't you ask the supervisor for this person NOT to come to your house? She has refused to follow your directions and her presence or impending presence obviously upsets you. If not I would make it clear in writing before any incidence occurs that this woman has shown disregard for your directions and has shown a threatening attitude to your dog. Maybe get other staff to write that they have no problems with your dog. -
I was under the impression that a guide dog puppy has the same exemption rules that apply to guide dogs. It is important that they are socialised in all areas that a guide dog may have to work in. I have seen guide dog puppies in shopping centres and in the airport.

Well not quite like that. I really just expect them to follow short commands and I think they know my routines so they often do what I require without me actually speaking. I do however often praise with a good girl / good boy them for for doing what I require. But then they also get lots of attention for just being there.

What To Put In The Backyard For Dogs?
Scarlet replied to Isabel964's topic in General Dog Discussion
idigadog what lucky dogs and little boy! I have a clam shell half full of water all year. I don't fill it because then the cane toads can get in and out, but half full they get in and usually can't get out-so I can catch and freeze them. It gets used a lot in summer and even the odd winter days. It also serves as a water bowl that never gets knocked over. It could be a pain if you had little children as when any come here for a visit I either stay with them in the yard or lock the door to the garden. -
How wonderful of the hospital

My Neighbour's Kelpie X With No Food Manners ?
Scarlet replied to jakeyjangels's topic in General Dog Discussion
Is your neighbour with you when both dogs play? If she is then it is difficult and I just wouldn't eat while they were there but if she isn't there ask her if she would mind you teaching the dog not to jump on you when you are eating. I do think it's reasonable to firmly tell the dog no if he is jumping on you even if the neighbour is there. I would find this reasonable. If I'm minding dogs (or children)I treat them like mine. -
Travelling Up North With Your Dog?
Scarlet replied to JimmyTheHuman's topic in General Dog Discussion
I lived in the West Kimberley for 8 years and found it very dog friendly -was about 10 years ago though. Near the coast and when on salt water rivers keep dogs away from the water. I wouldn't sleep on the ground or in a tent near salt water and I wouldn't have a dog there either. But if you go inland a bit most of the rivers and gorges are safe and the dog will have a wonderful time. The Gibb River Rd is perfect and safe North / inland from May River. The Kimberley doesn't have paralysis ticks but lots of cattle ticks. And heartworm is about so take precautions. Snakes are no worse than other parts of bushland Australia. -
A curly coat retriever would be worth considering. I think they would fit just about every requirement. Great low shedding coat although it can be difficult to find ticks in the curls. I had one many years ago and lost her to a snake bite - so yes they are very inquisitive and very intelligent and she certainly chased rabbits. She never caught any but would retreive shot ones. If there is a dam nearby then it would be in 7th heaven. Fantastic swimmers and their coat is sort of self cleaning and dries immediately.

I peg the dogs blankets, mat covers on the line and beat the cr#* out of them before I put them in the machine -a front loader. Just make sure there is no human washing on the line first :D

Sweeneys Reserve on Old Dayboro Rd in Petrie is quite good. It is just past the police station / court house. Its a large park and a section is off leash - the North Pine River is one boundary so obviously that part isn't fenced. The water is a mix of salt and fresh

I believe most (if not all?) Qld councils only allow 2 dogs wihout a permit. Before council amalgamations some councils only allowed 1 depending on the size of the block

I had a curly coat when my boys were young. Not sure about the allergy thing but she didn't shed much - nothing like a lab! She was very strong and quite strong willed. She was very intelligent but not a pliable as a lab. She was fantactic with my young boys but could accidentally knock them over. She was not at all reserved and nothing fazed her. Yes she would swim ALL day and I'm sure she could sniff out water Altogether a beautiful dog.

I think most of the terrier breeds are lowish shedding but many are very active What about a Shih Tzu or pug , I think they are more "laid back" than terriers.
-
Another that didn't come out alive but a lab once owned swallowed a rabbit whole and alive - my other two dogs were chasing him and he wasn't going to share. It was quite disgusting.

I believe this is correct. People have a legal right to access your front door. This means you are responsible if your dog bites someone who, having entered your property, is going to or coming from the front door.
