  1. What a stunning pup. She looks like a seductress in the first photo and it appears as if her spell is already working.
  2. I have one dog who frantically runs around barking when storms are approaching / on. If I'm out I'll come home to a drenched, exhausted dog-still running around. I don't think he can stop himself and he appears relieved when I stop him. I put him on a lead and tie him inside next to my chair.I'll then sit and watch TV or listen to music -I don't know if the external noise helps. I do stay close and talk to him in a normal voice. Anyway he settles really well. It's almost as if I have taken control and he can "give up"
  3. Many years ago I had a rough collie who to this day was the friendliest, softest, most well socialised dog I have ever know. He loved everyone and all animals as well. Not a mean bone in his body. He came everywhere with me, and I travelled a bit, so he had done the occasional warning growl to protect/alert me. However one time I was walking along a bush track - Kurrie was behind me sniffing around, and a man came out of the bushes and grabbed me. I screamed (of course) and Kurrie came running and flew at him. I think he was going for his neck but the guy put his elbow up and Kurrie got his arm. After a brief scuffle the guy ran off bleeding. Honestly I can't remember too much clearly but the police thought he was wonderful, so did I.
  4. What a wonderful program. PAL is not my first choice but it is better than a pie or hunger. Some sort of kibble would be easier to feed the dogs and many of the dogs would likely be getting soft foods from their owners. I always think of PAL as tinned but of course they have kibble too.
  5. I agree their instinct is amazing. I previously had gun dogs who exhibited natural signs of retrieving dead animals including rabbits. So maybe not "birdyness". At this time we lived on a property. I currently have herding dogs and one in particular looks like he is rounding up the other one, especially when we go to a large space and he has room to "work". He does the whole crouch down, running in wide arches then slowly moving in sort of thing.
  6. Beautiful dogs and their obvious training is a credit to their owners.
  7. Unfortunately my dogs are not as dog socialised as I might like - I've fostered and they're happy with other dogs here, on walks etc I've had and seen bad experiences in dog parks so I only go to dog parks when they're empty. If I see another dog coming I leave. Unfortunately we can't trust people.
  8. What a wonderful result  I hope everyone can get some rest before the birth and that all goes well.
  9. I'd just suggest not leaving a collar on her while you are away if you're worried about choking. Or you can get "breakaway" collars that will unclip if the dog gets the collar caught on anything. Sounds like she is a great pup and she might even like her alone time. Try not to stress to much as she could pick up on your anxiety and that could stress her
  10. a) Breed:Rough Collie b) Age:17 c) Diet:Pal, scraps, all dairy, cereal, fruit, vegies, anything but he also had lots of fresh meat and chicken ( in the last couple of years he had to eat soft food and he loved chicken giblets. d) Supplements:nil. I don't think dogs had supplements in "those" days. e) Exercise regime:None in particular but I was young and very active and this dog came everywhere with me. f) Temperament:Bomb proof. Loved everyone but he mostly came into contact with adults. He tolerated children when he met them. He was great with all animals but loved cats. g) Prior/current health concerns: He had heart worm when he was around 12 yrs old. I had not previously heard of it and vets didn't recommend preventative worming. This was about 1985. He was diagnosed with bowel cancer at around 15, was medicated and had another 2 good years. h) Living arrangements: Wherever I was but he liked the cold and would prefer outside if the house was heated too much. I travelled a lot around Aust and NZ in the 70s & 80s and he came everywhere with me - buses, trains etc. I don't know if he was allowed to but I never gave it a thought and no one stopped me. On interstate trains he had to go in the cargo carriage but guards would let me sleep with him and a couple of times they snuck him into me if I had a sleeper. I even hitch hiked with him a couple of times i) Pictures!I'd really have to search the archives! Since Kurrie I've had dogs live to 10 - 13yrs.
  11. I have a Maddy, which she gets 99.9999% of the time. Sometimes when one son is getting her attention he calls her Mad-e-line which he really draws out. She will come slinking up to him, he claps his hands then they both roll on the floor in play. It started as something he called her when she was in trouble but it is a game now and she LOVES hearing Mad-e-line but I'm not sure if she recognises it as her name
  12. Too close for comfort for me too although I will probably have to work till I'm in my 70's. Any further dogs I have will be adults so that leaves it pretty open but I'm leaning towards rough collie; sheltie, Tibetan Spaniel, Cavalier / King Charles Spaniel or greyhound But I'm also thinking of giving myself a break from some vacuuming and a poodle or bichon frise are looking tempting too.
  13. I'm sure you'll be fine. Because the police were the notifiers Child Safety and the RSPCA do have to investigate (as they should all reports) but again because the police are mandatory reporters they can sometimes "over step the mark" rather than miss something they should have reported. Obviously the police officer didn't understand the use of crates whereas RSPCA officer should. I would also think that because there has been such a long gap between when the notification would have been made and you have been contacted neither organisations saw the report as urgent.
  14. I did some fostering for about 2 years and I never had trouble giving dogs a new name - most were from the pound so names were unknown. Then some had another name change when they went to their new homes. None of them had any trouble. A couple weren't house trained but they learnt quite fast - much faster than pups. Not pulling on the lead was probably the only thing that took a while to learn but most learnt other rules pretty fast. You can teach old dogs new tricks I'm also over the puppy stage so the only dogs I'll ever have again will be adults but preferably over 4/5 years. Probably ex showing/breeding dogs or from a reputable rescue group - preferably dogs kept in a home. Currently I have 2 dogs; one from a pup and another was around 2yrs old when he came to live with me-a foster failure. I can honestly say I have no preference and love each as much as the other
  15. Well they have to make the property more secure so the dog can't get out. 5' fences simply aren't good enough. Expensive but I'm currently looking at properties and "fixing" fencing is an expense I just have to include.

  17. In Qld children, under 18 yrs, nearly always give evidence on closed circuit TV in cases of a sexual matter. It is often taped and played back to the jury. Children by law must have a support person with them when giving evidence but the person is not allowed to have eye contact with them or say anything so as not to be perceived as influencing their evidence. There is a group called PACT -Protect all Children Today - who train volunteers for this role. The volunteers support the child and family through the entire court/legal processes that may take 12 / 18 /24 months.
  18. I don't think there is a turf made to withstand a lot of traffic and dogs are tough on grass! I've had dogs in a big yard and really didn't notice too much damage but the smaller the area gets the more the grass is damaged. Largish areas of gravel or mulch might work but the synthetic grass sounds like the answer!
  19. In summer I always have a children's plastic clam shell with water in it. Mine don't tip buckets over but it is good to know they always have water. I once had a lab who was difficult to keep water available for. I ended up burying a bucket into the ground under the tap. That fixed him but you couldnt use it if you had puppies who could drown in a bucket.
  20. Tell them that they are being selfish. The visits are for their benefit at the expense of the dog. If they wanted the best for him they would not keep unsettling him I would not have them at the house again but I would be happy to post pictures and send e-mails letting them know about his progress...as long as this didn't get out of hand and they "expected" reports too often.
  21. IMO dogs are MUCH easier to train It does also come down to personality of both the dogs and kids but many/most dogs love to please you but children are born to test the boundaries-continually and as pixie_meg said it goes on for at least 17+years. But with kids and dogs the early, formative years are ultra important
  22. It's horrific when any dog is attacked but for a guide dog and the owner it must be a nightmare. I hope the dog can continue it's work and gets over this attack.
  23. If the dogs are allowed inside a yard is not that important to me for a short stay - maybe up to a week or so. A yard is handy but I can walk the dogs for exercise and toileting. My dogs prefer human company to space.
  24. One broken nose. As I bent down to pat an excited dog he jumped up and his head hit my nose. Not bad in comparison though.
