Give Varicool a PM. She is running a small breeds rescue in West Brisbane and may have some ideas. Varicool is an experienced rescuer and would be able to help select a suitable small dog.

Was going to suggest something similar; doubt that you'll hear from him again.

I had a curly with 4 small children. Yes she did do zoomies, like most dogs, and the boys learn't to lay on the ground as this was the only time she would possibly knock them over. They actually thought this great fun. She was destructive as a pup but I think most retrievers are-or they have been in my experience. The kids learn't to put their stuff away! BUT she was so loving and gentle and very smart. She LOVED water and we were lucky to live near a great recreational lake, where we lived in summer. Her recall was fantastic-though it was hard to get her out of the water! She could certainly take all the attention and rough play from 4 very boisterous boys. A great family dog.

Well You Shouldn"t Have Walked Through The Gate
Scarlet replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
You never know when the police will turn up. I was with the police and they were executing a warrant for my work. They jumped a gate to get to the front door, dog bit one of the officers, the dog was pepper sprayed and has now been reported as dangerous. The people we were looking for actually lived next door. -
Border Collie Puppies Found - Hervey Bay Qld
Scarlet replied to bordacollies4me's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'm living in Maryborough and travel to Brisbane fairly regularly so if they (or any other dogs)ever need transporting just let me know. I always have my 2 with me but I could bring a crate and fit them in somewhere. From what I can gather Maryborough Animal Refuge seem pretty good. -
Leaving Clam Shells With Water In Dog Runs
Scarlet replied to mantis's topic in General Dog Discussion
I leave the clam shell with water but only a 3 or 4 inches, just enough to wet the belly. Not so much for the dogs safety but just in case a child wanders into the yard - unlikely as it is fenced and you have to go through the house to get into the back yard.. I know the bucket is more of a danger for children but that is my thinking. -
I know pythons quite often take up house in roofs and my son kept children's pythons -one which escaped and lived in the wall cavity for a few weeks so I've experienced them squeezing through very small gaps. It was only a small snake though. I thought I had some distant memory of hearing that venomous snakes didn't / couldn't climb as well as pythons so didn't climb man made structures at all / very often. It might have been more about venomous snakes only climbing rough surfaces like trees rather than concrete stairs and plaster walls. AS I said it must have been wishful thinking

Must have been some myth I'd heard somewhere and was hoping for some fact behind it.

I'll be looking to purchase a house soonish (when I get my place ready for the market and sell it!) I have seen a couple of places I like but they are surrounded by cane fields which I'm assuming snakes love - I think maybe more pythons than venomous - But I'd still have to consider the dogs and me! I'd like to keep chooks but I think that is just inviting them How far down do you have to bury the snakemesh and how high up is it requires to go. Is it only pythons who climb (up into a high set Queensander) or do venomous snakes climb stairs and posts?

With one of my labs we had to bury the bucket in the ground. We made a concrete mould under the tap so we could put a bucket in it

HOw did the breeder find out they were at RSPCA? How does the RSPCA now know the breeder is the legal owner if they didn't know that 2 months ago? Surely they wouldn't take her word for it. (so somewhere they have admitted a mistake?) So they either scanned or they didn't. They are either negligent for not scanning or have scanned and failed to notified the legal owner One chip can move but surely not two. I would immediate get legal advice AND have a letter sent asap I would go to the police - the RSPCA have stolen goods and when they learnt the goods were stolen have refused to give them back to the legitimate owner I would contact the media immediately. KEEP DETAILED NOTES OF EVERY CONVERSATION - TAPE PHONE CALLS (check the legalities of taping phone conversations or make sure it is recorded when she informs people the conversation is being taped) If I lived in SA I'd happily protest outside the RSPCA to get media attention

I have one storm phobic dog. I hate being at work when one is brewing. I put him on lead and tie him next to me inside the house. He immediately calms, maybe I'm lucky but maybe he has some association that I'm now in charge or he is safe somehow. If I bring him inside, even when I'm holding his collar it does nothing to calm him but the lead is some sort of comfort/security.

Even though the internet should make it easier for the general public to find registered breeders I still think a lot of the public have little understanding of registered breeders and the advantages of purchasing their pup from them. I speak to people who think registered dogs are only for people who want to show etc. Sometimes people are surprised that you buy pets from registered breeders. Would it be worth the different breed organisations put adds in their local paper with a link to a phone no or web site advertising current or upcoming litters?

This would be a point of discussion. Child protection workers are authorised officers and can take action without the police - not that they would necessarily want to. The use of powers under the Child Protection Act 1999, section 16(1) can be exercised if all of the following apply: an authorised officer or police officer is investigating an allegation of harm or risk of harm to a child the officer has been denied contact with the child or cannot reasonably gain entry to the place where the officer reasonably believes the child is the officer reasonably suspects that the child is at immediate risk of harm, or is likely to be taken from a place and suffer harm if the officer does not take immediate action. Use of reasonable help and force in exercising section 16 Powers under the Child Protection Act 1999, section 16, are able to be exercised with help and the use of force deemed reasonable in the circumstances. ‘Reasonable’ is what an ‘average’ person would consider necessary and appropriate in the presenting circumstances. Any force used should not be excessive, that is, no more than absolutely necessary to ensure the safety of the child and the CSO. ‘Help’ refers to assistance that may be required. A CSO may request whatever ‘help’ is considered necessary in the circumstances. The help will generally come from the QPS and support workers, but it may also be requested of family members, or other people who are at the scene at the time. ‘Force’ can involve different types of actions, such as entering without consent or breaking a window or door.

I'm sure they do. My two Border collies play reasonably rough with each other but put in a puppy or even our cat and the game immediately changes. The intensity really goes down and they can be so gentle

A Dog Charged And Grabbed Our Dog This Arvo
Scarlet replied to Pattycake's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'd be asking around friends - or even on here- if anyone with very dog friendly dogs would meet up with your dog asap. This is the sort of experience that can possibly make your dog a bit nervous around other dogs. Maybe your DIL needs to get it on record with her GP too. -
Best to go onto the Breed Sub forum at the to of general dog discussion and read the shar-pei thread. They will be the people to ask http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/105829-shar-pei-thread/

What Would Your Friends And Family Do With Your Dogs?
Scarlet replied to Alyosha's topic in General Dog Discussion
Luckily for me this is quite easy. My sons live about 3 hrs away and I know they would drop anything to come and collcet my dogs for any reason. When I moved out of Brisbane they quite openly said they would miss the dogs more than they would miss me. My children were teeenagers when we got these dogs so they are family dogs and I'd completely trust them to make the best decisions for Maddy and Charlie. -
Council Notice Regarding Noise From Dog
Scarlet replied to ILuvAmstaffs's topic in General Dog Discussion
Years ago a friend had a neighbour making nearly daily reports to the council about her dogs. She boarded them in a kennel for a week - the reports continued - end of council paying any attention to the neighbour. All documented and the kennel even photographed the dogs and wrote an accompaning letter confirming they had the dogs for X dates. Sort of expensive but it worked -
I think dogs depend a bit on the children I had a rough collie for 16 years and although he was great with my niece and nephew I think he was happy to see them go home - he was such a gentle soul but then he grew up without children so preferred adults and older children. He would NOT have coped when I had 4 young boys. They were great with dogs but very "rough and tumble" kids. I had a curly coat then and she was wonderful. Curly coated retrievers have lots of energy and wouldn't cope locked in a yard without lots of interaction. Ours wasn't walked every day BUT she was part of the family so something was always going on. We lived near a large lake and she lived for swimming! So they would have to get the opportunity to swim. But a great kids dog.

I feed raw and dry equally so answered dry but it did make me wonder if the researcher was in fact a dog owner.

In Qld cats are NOT allowed to leave your property and you are fined as you would be a dog. Different councils may may be vary in the way they apply this rule and I doubt if many people are aware of it.

Mine love walking in the rain so they still get their daily walk but for weeks and weeks I've lived inside which means they do as well. I know they miss me walking aound outside because I always throw the ball and they are just more active when I'm out and about. We are all feeling this years cabin fever.

I've had quite a few dogs over the years and all lived to over 10yrs apart from one girl who died of a snake bite at 4 yrs. Koorie a rough collie was PTS at 16.5 when his bowel cancer became too much for him. That was 25 yrs ago and I still miss him.
