  2. If you don't have things for him to chew, i can guarantee he will find chair legs
  3. I have only just saw this too, KW. Condolences to you and your family RIP Rex
  4. I am so sorry to hear of the news, Fifi :D  Run free, Navarre
  5. Maybe it would be best to get an allergy test done?? Could possibly be something in the air, or the water for that matter.
  6. I usually let mine eat for about an hour outside. Depending on how much is eaten, i will take it away from him and then throw it out. He used to be a burier, but not anymore.
  7. People and dogs are my two biggies. Your puppy will come into contact with these most times in their life, they need to be taught right from wrong from the start.
  8. I have only just seen this thread.... I have no words, Cassie. I know how excited and how much you loved Oakley, i am so very sorry for you loss, my heart is breaking for you at this time  RIP Oakley, Jake will take good care of you until we meet again....
  9. Sorry it has come to this stage, Moops ;) I have no advice to give, just to give the boofer healing vibes.
  10. Just of interest, the Eukanuba FP contains a preservative called Ethoxyquin (commonly used to preserve fish based products) about which there are some health concerns (my dog's accupunturist brought this tomy attention so I did a little research). I know it has been discussed on this forum before...a search might be of interest. The EP holisitc range uses an alternate (natural) preservative. Just a thought. what about the non-holistic range NAO? does it contain Ethoxyquin?
  11. Why don't you try Mishka on a higher premium dog food? then you can judge for yourself whether he looks better on it or not. Personally, for my dog, lower premium dog foods mean more frequent and bigger stools, plus Kobi will just not eat it (fussy shite ). If your dog is doing well on it, though, why bother changing? If you are happy with the results and your dog is happy too, there isn't really a need to change.
  12. I do on the very odd occasion. No set pattern either. Its usually if i have decided to have a big training day (dosen't happen very often anymore ) and a lot of treats have been issued.
  13. You do get vaccinated for kennel cough, but you dog can still catch it.
  14. Another eagle pack fan here. Kobi looks excellent on it and its about the only dry food i can get him to eat without giving me the look of 'wtf is this?!' :D
  15. Sorry for you loss, Pix. RIP Kaeleigh

    Trez

You did the best you could for him, Pands. I am sorry it came to this. RIP Trez
  17. Wow, a 2:2 that is extreamly high and labs are very prone to elbow displasia. I don't understand what the breeder was thinking putting them together. As for the 7:0 thats a little worrying too. Even though the breed average is a score of 12, it would still concern me that it was on the one side. My labs score is a seven, but is more spread out over the two hips (3:4)
  18. ETA ummm, yes Rom, but don't experiment any furthur!!
  19. They are not suggesting that the Indian Wolf is the base, they are saying it has branched off into another species seperate of our modern day wolves, but still from a same common ancestor (if that makes sense). ETA as said in this passage here: It is very interesting reading, but so confusing
  20. Recent studies suggest not, KK. I have a book here "Wolves, Behaviour, Ecology and Conservation" (Very comprehensive book, one i reccommed for any wolf lover). There is a section dedicated to the origins of the wolf. After re-reading last night, scientists seem to theorise that the origin of modern day wolves came from Canis Lepophagus (North American canide species at that time about 2.5 million years ago) which spread over Eurasier, where another primative Canis species was found (Canis Arnensis). From these it is theorised that the first wolves were to come from and there is a list of about 5 or 6 ancient Canis species, spanning throughout time before we get to the wolves of today (ie, red, grey) What i am trying to get at is, the first "definate" wolves we're found to be during the Late Blancan period ( 1.8- 2.5 M years ago) Long before the earliest Indian Wolf fossils are recorded. Edited because my time line didn't make sense
  21. My personal belief's would agree with you, RM. But hey at this point anything is possible
  22. To throw another spanner into the works, i found an article i had in my folder about Indian wolves being the oldest and also being put under its own species: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/3804817.stm and this one: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/400699.cms Particularly this passage: Yet another species the newly domesticated dog could have intebred with. Don't let you're head explode
  23. although i did not find the exact article i wanted, i did find this interesting read: http://canidae.ca/EVOLUTIO.HTM This article talks about Tomarctus which both foxes and wolves lineage comes from. It also talks about the Dire wolf (now extinct) and how it directly comes from that lineage, but is still uncertain whether the Grey Wolf comes from a different lineage. But there is still the possibility of interbreeding, as they co existed together 40 000 years ago. Im confused
  24. I believe you would be correct in saying that all Canis species came from the same ancient Geno. If this we're indeed the case and all of these sub-species (later turn into species ie Wolves, Jackals etc) we're so wide spread over the world, whats to say these now seperate species didn't evolve "sweating from the pads" ( my wording sucks ), by themselves? Could domestic dogs over thousands of years, develop this as well, or is it too small a time frame? I guess we can see the benefit from a Jackals point of view of why this adaption would take place, you just need to look at the habitat they live in. I saw an article a while ago, discussing the time frame of the canide species and where they are descendant from. I can't for the life of me remember..... I will have to go searching. I must admit, dogs being a descendant of the wolf sounds a lot more appealing. Its what we have been told over many years, it just sounds right
  25. From what i have read, jesomil, domestic dogs have been put under its own species (Canis Familiarus) and also under wolves as a sub spicies (Canis Lupus Familiarus) and seem to change quite often. I guess the problem with this and also why the origin of dogs is debated so much, is that all species under the CANIS Geno can interbreed. This includes Jackals, wolves and Coyote. This does not include wild dogs, as they are put under a different Geno (Lycaon Pictus). So it is very probable that dogs could have come from different speices throughout time. Makes it hard for scientists to trace back the origins of our dogs, when they we're the most distributed animals on the planet (and indeed canides still are). i found this write up quite interesting: http://www.idir.net/~wolf2dog/wayne1.htm especially this passage here: So it even suggests here, that the dog during the domestication "period" may still have interbred with the wild wolf populations and indeed have different origins (Which i tend to think could be the case, primative humans would not have had the resources to contain their new companions) And this here: Unfortunately im a genetic bimbo so i kinda skipped that part ( and most of it Can someone decipher the whole write up for me? ) But i did highlight that Jackals were used in this experiment as all come under the CANIS Geno. I will add that this is an excellent thread, guys. I couldn't keep my mind on my work today ;) ETA Jackals do usually live as pairs, but sometimes have a "helper" (usually one or two offspring from the year before). Jackals are a lot more smaller and also hunt smaller prey. Maybe this is why they don't need to live together in a big pack?? Take the wild dogs for example. They live in the same area, but their game is bigger and thus need more pack members to take down their prey.
