TerraNik, where was the show that you heard these German Spitz barking? I have a German Spitz and 2 Dalmatians. They all bark to alert me when someone comes down the driveway.

Sadly my 2 dogs have Sarcoptic Mange. Both have had Ivermectin injections once a week for the last fortnight and are being washed in Pyohex when i can. If there is anyone who in dol world who could answer some questions re this matter it would be greatly appreciated. Q1: When washing in Pyohex should the whole dog be washed in this every time or is washing the just the affected areas okay? Q2: Could the Sarcoptic Mange mites be still alive in the backyard? If so how do you kill the mites that have fallen off the dogs? Q3: What is best to use on dog bedding to kill mites?

Thanks all for the advice. Greatly appreciate it. I have some Claratyne here but am a bit worried about giving it. As the old dog is on tablets already i would only be trying it on the younger dog. I was going to take them to the vet today but i had nobody to babysit. I will try and take them tomorrow to the vet.

The possible Wandering Dew
-
It all began when my 10yo Dalmatian got allergies where the hair around his eyes was rubbed off from him rubbing his face on the ground. I took him to the vet and he was given a antibiotic and a antihistamine tablet to take. That was about 2 weeks ago and he has improved but is still itchy. I was also told to wash him in Pyohex(not easy to wash around his eyes). Now my 8mth old Dalmatian has been scratching like mad and has lumps under his legs(front & back) and some on his tummy. I washed him in the Pyohex but he still scratches as before. Well, i have had a headache for a few days now trying to figure out what is causing these allergies. I have done both dogs with Frontline Plus. When i get to the shops next i am going to buy Quit-Itch and wash both dogs in it(helped when older dog had a hot spot). Looking around the backyard yesterday i found what looks very like Wandering Dew. What could i give to the dogs if it is this weed that has caused their allergies? I feed both dogs on Advance. I was a bit worried re the 8mth old dog and the dog food as the one he gets has a fairly high protein content. Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated. To add to all this I have a 13 week old baby(human) to look after(I am a single parent) and we both have been sick. Also my baby came early and i have not got a new car yet(only have a panel van) so at present i have many issues. :D

I have been told to try Claratyne tablets for my 2 dallys who have allergies. One is scratching a lot. Both have been washed in Pyohex. The dally scratching heaps has small lumps under his back and front legs and tummy. I am also looking at changing their diet.

what is the safest antihistamine to give a dog and how much? When my dog was younger he was bitten by something on his ear and it swelled up. I did not give him anything and it eventually went down. Would like to have some on hand in case of emergency.

For Those Feeding High Protein Kibble
Annedal replied to Lemonlime's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have a 8mth old Dalmatian who i have fed Advance since i got him. He would scratch sometimes but it was thought it was due to it being summer time, etc. Advance Growth Large Breed which has 28% protein and 16% fat. Recently it has gotten very bad and his scratching has become constant. There has been plenty of advice for changing the dog food to a food with a lower protein level. Any advice on what i should do would be greatly appreciated. -
I use the Mighty White N Brite on my 2 Dalmatians. I also use the Silk Finish spray.

i don't feed the VIP rol;ls myself(am considering it) I have housesitted for a lady who breeds Italian Greyhounds and she feeds them cooked mince/chicken necks and VIP roll(warmed up before given to dogs). This lady has been showing her igs for a long time and has done extremely well.

My 8mth old Dalmatian has a bad allergy at present but i am not sure what is causing it. He is scratching at his chest, elbows and down his legs. Also on his back legs is sort of scabby/hair missing. I have washed him in Pyohex but he is scratching just as much. As i thought it could be flea allergies i have done both my dogs with frontline. My 10yo Dalmatian had a bad allergy and it got infected and i took him to the vet. They did a scrapping and could see no mites/mange. He was put on a Rilexine and Prednisalone. This dogs allergy was worst around his eyes and he was extemely itchy and would drag his face along the ground(not doing that much now). Anyone got any suggestions what i should do re the young dog? i hate seeing him scratching so much. He has scratched so hard he has rubbed hair off in some areas.

My 10yo Dalmatian male has been rubbing his face on the ground or rubbing it with his leg. Around his eyes the skin is pink. What could it be? What should i do?

Of course everybody has their own opinions on desexing. I have a 9yo Dalmatian who i had desexed when he was 1yo. Before this he was constantly wondering off(at the time was living on non dog proof fenced property). His personality has not changed. Not long after my first dally was desexed I got a 3yo entire male Dalmatian. I did not get him desexed. This dog did sire a few litters after I got him. This dog sadly has just passed away at 11yo due to cancer. Dogs that are kept entire are more prone to prostate cancer and bitches kept entire are also more prone to getting ovarian cancer. Of course the decision is up to you to desex or not. It depend on the dog.

Today i made the hard decision of letting go of my beautiful 11yo male Dalmatian, Claude. I got Claude when he was 3yo as his owner was becoming too busy with other interests. Claude enjoyed a short showing career but he really was not too interested in it all. Claude just enjoyed the outings to the shows with his son, Cody. Claude was a very loyal and gentle boy. Cody and Claude lived happily together and even though Cody was the boss in the yard Claude would not have a go at Cody, just ignore him. In 2001 after only a months training Claude and I completed the Endurance Test. Claude had never seen a bike when we began and we almost had a few falls but he successfully passed the Endurance Test. I will miss my beautiful Claude. Claude was a one in a million.

My usual vet has changed owners and there are some new faces there. The vet that ended up attending to my boy was really nice and did not get angry with all my questions.

The vet we first went to has rung twice to see how my dog is going. I have been to this vet many years ago when I got my first dog(son of my old boy). I only took him to the first vet as it was close to the boarding kennels, i knew the vet(sort of) and I wanted my dog to be helped as soon as possible.

On thursday night I got a call from the boarding kennel where my 11yo Dalmatian male was staying. He was doing runny poos with blood in it. First thing the next day I went and picked him up and took him to the closest vet. I told the vet what I had been told by the boarding kennel and also my dog left a nice sample of his poo on the surgery floor. From looking at my dog (who had lost a lot of weight) and his runny poo this vet advised me that he most likely had Parvo and was organising for my dog to go to a 24hr vet to be put on a drip, etc and telling me that he could be there for a few weeks and that bedding, etc needed to be disposed of or disinfected with a special solution. I went back to the boarding kennel and told the owner and she said that that was rubbish. He did not have parvo, more like a pain in the stomach. Onto our second vet visit and this time to my usual vet. My dog had blood tests, etc and a test for parvo which turn out negative. My dog ended up being on a drip for 2 days(came home with me at night as vet is not 24hr attended). He has a bowel infection. I did recieve a call from the first vet to see how my dog was. Also at the time I was at the first vet i was very stressed. As she thought i was going to another vet who would of done a test for parvo she went and disposed of the sample she had taken. Really, how could she make a diagnoses without proof of the parvo virus showing up in a test? The first vet has really annoyed me and I certainly will not be going there again. Thankfully my old boy is well on his way to recovery.

I have a now 8yo dalmatian who was desexed at 1yo. He never grew very masculine and it has not changed how he behaves(or doesn't). Desexing will lessen the chance of the dog getting prostat cancer.
