  1. ringing around now. i so badly want the moose one. . haha
  2. Haha - Perhaps I could get OH to come down and baby sit ALL the dogs if we get too tired. I am desperate to find a new collar and lead for Doug before the workshop. Mine is a cheapy I got for while Doug was a tiny pup - and that time sure didn't last long. Steve - you would kill me if I turned up to the workshop with it. I WANT a lupine lead set but can't find anyone that sells them here in Perth (besides my vet and he only has the ladybird one and OH won't have it ). Does anyone know where I can get one besides the net?

The joys of puppy hood hey?! I recently told this story in the gardening help thread - OH and I just bought our first home. It has a great backyard and beautiful entertaining area. When we moved in I got someone to check off the trees against those on the 'poisonous to dogs' list. 5 whole trees had to be removed. Then the little monster decided that the decorative gravel stones look like kibbles and started eating them. Had to get rid of those too. It looked SO NICE. Lucky he is so cute.
  4. Im pretty sure Im gonna bring Doug.. but if he becomes too much of a handful or is too bored Ill ring OH to come pick him up. Perhaps we should meet earlier than 9 at the grounds so our dogs can have a meet n greet?
  5. Did anyone see the dog on Funniest Home Video show that pushed the chair out from under the table - over to the kitchen bench so that it could get the food on top? They are smart little buggers when they want to be.

hey westiefan Sounds like pretty normal puppy behaviour to me. My Doug (in my signature) is nearly 4 months and he does it too. I just try and make sure he has access to stuff he is allowed to chew (such as cardboard boxes and paper rolls). A raw bone is great - it'll keep him busy for hours and give him something to chew. Make sure that the things you give him that he is allowed to distroy - in no way resemble the things you dont want in to destroy. Pups can't tell the difference. I heard the other day of a lady that was upset with her pup chewing her ugh boots so gave the pup her old pair. The pup then thought it was ok and distroyed both . It might be easier to remove the temptation at this stage, keep in a contained area when you can't supervise him. Anyhoo - he'll more than likely grow out of it. Has he finished teething?
  7. Douglas LOVES puppy school!! I second all that rexy suggested. Our puppy school provides the treats/toys/distractions that are needed for the class. I would just try and write down all the questions you want to ask your instructor because I have found I often forget the ones I really need answered in all the excitement of the class. Have fun!!
  8. perhaps some of people that are coming might have one of those fancy-schmancy waterproof tents that I see at the dog shows. i wish I had one . Not long now. So excited.
  9. We started moving into our new house yesterday. had to remove 4 whole trees because we found they were poisonous to dogs. after we had stripped the backyard, we found douglas eating the decorative gravel the last owners had in the garden. thats right, he was eating ROCKS. they must look like kibble. i can guarantee they wont FEEL like kibble when the come out the other end. think we are going to have to remove the gravel as well as the trees. bit worried we will end up with a desert.
  10. how exciting!! i have never met a finnish lapphund - let alone a puppy!! should be a good day. im almost as excited about meeting Perth DOLers as I am about the learning! ;)
  11. Hey Baja All info is here: K9 Force Website hope u can make it too ;)
  12. thats all fair enough - but I don't understand what I, as a new puppy owner am supposed to do. Everyone talks of the importance of socialisation but I understand that my pup's safety is more important. Am I supposed to wait until my pup is 16 weeks old before I socialise him? I understand KC is going crazy here in Perth but why would my vet risk the safety of my pup for the $50 fee she gets (50 for 4 weeks and we get a bag of food). It can't be for the money. She wouldn't make a cent. It may encourage us to use that surgery for our pup in the future, but even so, is that enough of a gain for her to put our pups in danger? I am SO SO confused. Why would vets be encouraging Puppy Preschool if they thought it would be a danger? I am so worried about this issue and don't know who to believe. This vaccination issue has driven me bonkers. My breeder swears my pup should now be immune because he has had 2 C5's but my vet says no. I have heard contradicting opinions on the importance of socialisation, of the risk of catching a disease - on EVERYTHING. I have started NUMEROUS threads asking peoples opinions and listened intently on threads started by others. I have talked to my breeder and a few different vets. And for all that - i am more confused than when I started. Sorry to hijack the thread -.
  13. I am starting Douglas at his first Puppy preschool today. My vet has told me it would be fine. He has had 2 vaccinations. I have not yet heard a story on DOL of a puppy coming down with parvo from puppy preschool. If anyone does know of such a thread.. I would REALLY like to read it. I am worried about the Parvo threat from PP but he is not yet being walked or taken out in public (outside of the doors of my car) and if my vet feels that PP is safe, I am more than happy to go. Doug really needs some dog socialisation skills and I think waiting the 4 weeks til he has had his 3rd vaccination is leaving it too long. (he has had 2 C5's and is waiting on a C3). I know how you feel. Its a very very hard choice to make. I have had heard so many different contradicting opinions on the matter and have chosen to go with the opinion of my vet because she is the one with training. I hope I have made the right decision. Goodluck with your boy!
  14. you taking a pup?! how old will he be?. i'd be more inclined to bring doug if he wasn't the only little one there. would love to meet a bubby pug.

    Biting Puppy

Hey guys. My 11 week old corgi pup - Douglas - is a real ankle/arm/hair/hand biter. Everytime we are not focussing all of our attention on him he will bite us anywhere he can reach (thank gawd for the stumpy legs). I have been saying 'no' and clapping my hands to distract him but this seems to stir him up more. He then barks and bites harder and gets very aggessive. As of a week ago we have been putting him in his pen everytime he starts going crazy and this settles him down generally straight away. We wait until he is settled until we let him out and he is usually fine for a bit until he bites us again. I have taught him to sit which I have been using to distract him from the biting. He has plenty of toys and excercise. I know corgis have a reputation for being a bit 'nippy' as adults and I really want to make sure I am not inadvertenly encouraging this behaviour. Am I doing the right thing?
  16. my breeder has the pups done with C5 vaccinations at 6 weeks, so that the second C5 vaccination can be done at 11 weeks. This removes the need for the 3rd vaccinations and makes the pups able to be out and about by 12 weeks of age. works out really good because i don't really have to make the choice between socialisation and keeping my pup safe from the nasties.
  17. Yep - WA born and bred . Its definately going to be great to put some faces to the WA 'names' here on DOL. hehe. *HOPEFULLY* I will bring the little monster. He will only be 16 weeks old at the time of the course. Will have to see how he is behaving closer to the date. At the moment he would just eat everyone's ankles off. oh gawd - SO SO much to learn. haha.
  18. im really looking forward to it! i hope we can get up the numbers so it can go ahead. i have SO much to learn! *i'll be the shy one hiding in the corner with a screaming corgi pup* haha
  19. my pup will be only 14 weeks old by the start of august. would love to come.. but not sure if it would be of any benefit to a little corgi that won't even be toilet trained properly!!?
  20. I am finally getting the puppy I have been dreaming of for years. Douglas is a pembroke corgi and is currently 5 weeks old so now it's time to get really organised. (will post pictures in the photo thread today) My breeder is putting together a fact sheet for me which I really appreciate but have some things that are playing on my mind. We are bringing the puppy into a household where there is one adult female dog (a aussy shepard cross) who gets walked twice a day in the park. She is fully vaccinated and doesn't interact with other dogs in the park. With my pup being bough home at 8 weeks, and not fully vaccinated until 12 weeks, do I need to seperate the 2 dogs for the 4 week gap? Can parvo and kennel cough be passed on this way? Also, we are planning on modifying a babies play pen for a place for him to be when we can't watch him like a hawk. Would it be best to set this up in a room (such as the lounge) where he would always be around people, or in a quiet room such as the study? I am so excited I might die! ;) ;) I really appriciate your help.
  21. I have always wondered this as well.. Was going to organise someone visiting him everyday to make sure he is ok and to give him his lunch feed. I am planning to have a week off work when the new pup comes to help him settle in. I'll add some questions.. How long are pups on 3 meals a day??.. Are automatic feeders ok for the lunch time feed??
