  1. Well said T and you are so very right, a lot of the time it is all the 'small' things that make rescue so successful. Like so many I am unfortunately unable to take in any one atm but I certainly can help with a few dollars here and there..
  2. My thoughts exactly tikira. Rescuers do rock!!! I'm hoping to be able to help anyway I can, I am on a 4 dog limit though and places are full at the moment
  3. I just saw this and its prob been posted before but I had to share as a BIG Thank You to all you rescue folk - it made me upon reading and think about the wonderful work you all do And for anyone who has not read it before :) Once I was a lonely dog, Just looking for a home. I had no place to go, No one to call my own. I wandered up and down the streets, in rain in heat and snow. I ate what ever I could find, I was always on the go. My skin would itch, my feet were sore, My body ached with pain. And no one stopped to give a pat Or to gently say my name. I never saw a loving glance, I was always on the run. For people thought that hurting me was really lots of fun. And then one day I heard a voice So gentle, kind and sweet, And arms so soft reached down to me And took me off my feet. "No one again will hurt you" Was whispered in my ear. "You'll have a home to call your own where you will know no fear." "You will be dry, you will be warm, you'll have enough to eat And rest assured that when you sleep, your dreams will all be sweet." I was afraid I must admit, I've lived so long in fear. I can't remember when I let A human come so near. And as she tended to my wounds And bathed and brushed my fur She told me 'bout the rescue group And what it meant to her. She said, "We are a circle, A line that never ends. And in the center there is you protected by new friends." "And all around you are the ones that check the pounds, And those that share their home after you've been found." "And all the other folk are searching near and far. To find the perfect home for you, where you can be a star." She said, "There is a family, that's waiting patiently, and pretty soon we'll find them, just you wait and see." "And then they'll join our circle they'll help to make it grow, so there'll be room for more like you, who have no place to go." I waited very patiently, The days they came and went. Today's the day I thought, my family will be sent. Then just when I began to think It wasn't meant to be, there were people standing there just gazing down at me. I knew them in a heart beat, I could tell they felt it too. They said, "We have been waiting for a special dog like you." Now every night I say a prayer to all the gods that be. "Thank you for the life I live and all you've given me. But most of all protect the dogs in the pound and on the street. And send a Rescue Person to lift them off their feet." Author: Arlene Pace
  4. Hi Everyone I have a large dog kennel to give away. It is in reasonable condition, fully lined with carpet, colourbond roof and on casters for easy relocation and keep up off the ground. Has been slightly renovated around the door by previous owner but nothing a lick of paint and good clean wont fix. Previously owned by Neapolitan Mastiffs, this kennel is a good size and fairly sturdy. I am located in the Adelaide Hills, please PM me if you are interested :)
  5. Thanks SAS, I'll send Patricia an email and see if she has any youngsters in at the moment :)
  6. Hi I have a full but open 15kg bag of Royal canin Giant Breed Formular Puppy that has been mixed with a 7kg bag of Supercoat puppy and 7kg bag of Optimum puppy. It is all open and mixed together in a 60l bin. Have only used about 1 or 2 kgs. All up would be about 30kgs. I also have half a dozen tubes of 40+kg Advocate to throw in as well. Unfortunately this will have to be pick up only, please PM me for details if you can make good use of this :)
  7. Firstly, so sorry for the recent losses of Flur and Grumpy Quite a few years ago I lost my dog to the hands of my ex husband and he burried him on the side of the road of a farm he worked at, I was devistated that he was buried out there all alone in some random place and vowed that from then on none of my guys would ever not come home and leave me so I have had everyone cremated. I have not had the opportunity to choose the vessel but all 4 have come home in a nice ceramic urn. I have had brass plaques made for each and they sit on the side board in the living room. One of my boys was given to me by a breeder friend and was co-owned so I asked to have him put into two matching urns so she could have one also, they were very happy to do this for me. It looks like tomorrow I will unfortunately be ordering another big black urn

  9. I know this subject has probably been covered many times before, I did a search but didn't really turn up any answers to my questions.. I'll try the short version.. As some may remember I lost an entire litter earlier this year and now I have pups on the ground to the same bitch. She has problems retaining progesterone and suffered pre-eclampsia or some kind of auto-immune problem where she reject placentas so after vigilant testing and supplementing through out her pregnancy she had 5 puppies via c-section, 2 were deceased and out of the 3 remaining boys one was only just revived and was nick named Squirt. The 2 deceased placentas were almost completely broken down and Squirts was as well. The other 2 pups were above average weight, placentas intact and in a different horn. On day 2 Mina decided that the pups were certainly not hers and were infact fair game, she grabbed hold of Squirt and managed a couple of puncture wounds before I could get him out of her mouth. Off to the vets on anti-biotics and put on tube feed as he had lost weight. Tubing was not working for him so I was feeding him by syringe as well as bottle feeding the other 2 as I have come so far as to get pups on the ground from her I was not taking any chances. Day 3 he seemed to be ok and was drinking well from the syringe and I had a good monitor of his intake. Day 4 he crawled to the corner and cried - fading. I already had him on glucose and added yakult, egg yolk and extra water, with in a couple of feeds he had stopped crying and more alert and by day 4 he was feeding very well from the bottle with me only having to top him up a few ml. We are now at day 8 and he is feeding extremely well via the bottle and is starting to gain a bit of weight (all be it slowly, he is still only just over his birth weight at this stage). So I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for suppliments now he is alot stronger, to get him a bit more up to speed? And I would like to know peoples experiences with pups that have survived either fps or failure to thrive, did they eventually grow and catch up or remain somewhat weaker/smaller? Where there any residual problems as an adolecent or adult? Did they end up relatively normal? What was the age of pup when it started to fade and/or got through it? How old is too old for a pup to still be at birth weight before it can catch up? Thanks in advance
  10. I used it for the first time about a week ago after months of battling with fleas introduced by my rescue. She seems really prone to them as when treated the other 4 dogs were fine but she had fleas again with in a week. Gave everyone comfortis just over a week ago and not a flea in sight, even the cats. But the next day I came home from work and my rescue looked like moths had been at her all day and she scratched and scratched and scratched. All of the other dogs were fine, no side effects at all. She is still scratching a bit but it seems to be lessoning. Her coat, whats left of it, is looking dull and horrible. I've now got her on zinc and flaxseed oil. I ended up getting it ebay, was cheaper and here within 3 days.
  11. Oh and I found two stafford ones missing aswell Dreamstaff and Lynneve
  12. Hi SwaY Just checked out the site, very nice btw One Neapolitan one missing of the top of my head : Eterno
  13. Thanks guys I will still keep her appointment for this afternoon - much rather be safe than sorry. She was still scratching a bit when we went to bed but settled quickley and didn't hear boo from her all night so hopefully it was just the fleas having their last supper
  14. Yesterday my delivery of Comfortis chewable fles treatment tablets arrived :D My Dane has had an ongoing fles problem for the last few months with many tried and tested treatments that all failed to keep the fleas at bay. It was suggested to me that she was maybe just one of those dogs who was prone to fleas as none of my other 4 dogs seemed to have the same problem. So I gave her the Comfortis which she happily gulped down, she scratched a bit for about half an hour but then seemed to settle. When I went to bed I gave her a quick once over and couldn't see any fleas on her (she is fawn so easy to see them on her) :D it seems to be working. During the night she work me twice with the noise of her chewing at herself, which in my half asleep ear is a normal noise. This morning she seemed fine when I left for work. I have just returned from work to find her looking like moths have been feasting on her all day ;) Mainly around her rump and inbetween her legs. There is NO redness or iritation of the skin, no sores or broken areas just chunks of fur missing. Has anyone ever experienced adverse reactions to comfortis before? I have her booked in to the vet tomorrow. There have been now other changes for her in the last 24 hours diet or otherwise just the comfortis
  15. @ Cable Guy. Miniera - Mina, Minni, Me Me and my fav from my 2 yr old niece Mina Mina. Pacchia - P Brain, Pin Head, Poo Face, Pecker Head, Rat and The Gazelle Bruno - Bru, Bruza, Booza, Boo Boo and some other variations of the same Mishka - Mish Brock - Brocky, Bock Bock, Sexy Man, Poor Bocky, Stinky, Asshole but most of the time he is called Get off ME!!!
  16. Yes that is what i was saying to him.. that one pup may have survived, it looking normal, very big - massive infact. But the others were of varying sizes, black (would have been an all grey litter) and disgusting - not formed properly, some where just blobs with no distinguishing features and a couple a bit bigger with funny half stumpy legs etc. So even if she had of given some signs or symptoms earlier the litter still would have been lost There is still some other reason for the death of these pups besides me not getting dates right, they started dying way before the 30th. No one spoke to me about dates - I guess they assumed that I would know it not being my first litter. But was my first Neapolitan litter, however I now know different thanks to you and Nancy. I now agree that I should of called Dr Girling but all things are good in hind sight. My vet is normally excellent it is just my rotten luck to have his not so good partner on call that night. Same with the other surgery I also called, one vet is great but the new young girl not so great and happened to be on call that night, at least she answered the phone but was of no real use. Unfortunately where we are there is not a great deal of choice and calling Dr Girling at that hour and travelling the 3 hours to get to him would not have made one bit of difference to the end result. I have made an appointment with my vet for this afternoon to discuss what happened and take the notes I have from the information given here so we are on the same page for next time. Sorry SwaY but I blame myself enough for this and yes maybe that one, maybe two, pups could have been saved but it doesn't explain the other 6 or 7? I hope now I am armed with enough information on prog testing and date calculating to give my next litter a much higher chance at survival. I am just embarrassed, sad and a bit over it now .
  17. SwaY - I took her to my own vet for prog from day 1 to about day 8, results were faxed to the repro vet and they let me know when they wanted her there. I took her to the repro vet every day after that until she was mated on day 12. They didn't give me prog results just told me when to bring her in. The vet I phoned that night was my local vet, the repro vet is 3 hours away. Is 15 ovulation? Thanks Nancy - definately a learning curve, not just in Mastini but in breeding in general. You can never learn enough in either. I think this has also taught my vet to listen to me and my instincts and when I say I think something is not right then its not bloody right. I still keep coming back to the fact that even if I had of got her in earlier only 1 of those pups may have survived - the rest were not formed, they had died long before. Plus I queried him on this as he was removing those alien looking things from her and he said there is no way he would touch a bitch prior to day 61 with out her showing major signs of being in whelp and in trouble, he was unhappy about doing it then as she was not to term, told me on the phone you dont want to take them out early as they wont be ready and may not survive. As soon as I saw the discharge I knew there was at least one dead pup in there. I now know for next time to be a hell of alot more assertive and find a new vet ;) All this info is great for future reference, thanks and I hope it helps others to refer to as well. I have diarised everything that you guys have said here as its been a great help. My previous breed bred like rabbits and whelped the same so all this is new to me.
  18. This is great SwaY and very helpful I see all the signs now, at the time though I didn't as I had the 3rd, being day 63, in my head for her to be due as no one had told me otherwise and signs were rather vague and speratic. My vet told me that the pup had died a minimum of 36 hours prior and I did query him on had I have brought her in on the friday or saturday prior would that pup have survived. He said if I had of brought her in then they would not have touched her as she was to early. My only question is that it would not of made any difference if I had of got the dates right as out of 8 pups only one was almost to term, the rest were at varying stages from about two weeks on, all but that one were not formed properly. So even if I had of had the date right, those other pups were already dead but there were no signs until the 31st when her temp went up and the 1st when she got the discharge. I had been monitoring her temp from 2 weeks prior to due date with no drop, only the high temp on 31st. I had rung the vet as soon as she got the temp and was told it was weather related (it was above 40 for two days here at the time) wet her down and monitor for 20 mins maybe give asprin. I told him she was already wet and under a fan and was told to wait. I did and her temp came down and she settled, that was approx 10pm on 31st. I then rang again at 1:45am on the 1st to say she had the black discharge, was told to hold out until she actually started to pant and nest etc or til morning as if I took her in then it would only be him and I and we could run into trouble with pups and her working on our own. I waited up with her for about half hour and wasn't happy, got the better of me so I phoned again (you always get paging service) but my call was not returned with in half an hour so rang the other vets, she said she agreed with him and to wait until she was having contractions. By 4am I phoned again left another message. 8am I phoned and said I was on my way to the surgery with her. He got there at 8:45am and the rest is history... Really the whole thing was a complete disaster and the more I try to find answers the more I feel I f**ed up The repro vet has now told me that he highly recomends mating her on her next season due to her now higher chance of pyometra but I'm not feeling very confident about it all.
  19. Sorry SwaY I must of missed you.. I went by date of insemination as wasn't told otherwise This was my first frozen AI, infact my first AI and didn't know there was a difference in calculating dates. But she went into whelp on day 60 anyway and the last pup was deceased by at least day 58 going by it skin break down. Thanks for that for future reference and sheds a little more light on what happened but i'm guessing there is more to your train of thought?? anything I can learn from this is really important. I keep looking for answers and wondering where I went wrong. Spoke at length to Dr Girling yesterday and he says there could be any number of reasons and next time we will do all tests and monitor her intensely. He also said he highly recomends mating her on her next season as now her chances of pyometra are so much greater :D
  20. Thanks. I just thought I'd put it up for an interesting topic of discussion. Was wondering how much people know about it and if its now becoming common practice amoungst breeders as a know cause of lost litters.... Yes i need to ring Chris anyway.. as he did the AI, for his stats.
  21. I did a quick search to see if this has been discussed before but couldn't find anything.. As some of you maybe aware I recently lost a whole litter - Csection revealed 8 dead pups at varying stages of developement. There were no signs, the bitch remained in top health until term, went into whelp but then got a black discharge alerting me to get her to the vet immediately. Through talks with other breeders it was suggested that it may have been caused by a drop in progesterone levels at some stage of the pregnancy and that next time to continue prog testing through pregnancy and if levels drop a dose of estrogin (sp?) can be given as long as results are within 24 hours of sample taken. So for discussion - have you heard of this? Do you do this? and if so at what times or how often through the pregnancy? In my other breed I had never heard of it and had many a successful litter, this is my first litter with this breed (Neapolitans) and seems to me would be a very costly exercise if it has to be done often through the pregnancy Thoughts...
  22. Thanks she is fine, came home last night. Now just have to get her through her loss. Felt sorry for her last night poor thing was just so lost looking for something thats not there ;) By this morning a 75kg beast tearing up my house looking for something that is not there p**ed me off and she got growled at She looked at me with shock and promptly lay down and went to sleep I'm now proving myself completely mad and planning my next litter Thank you everyone and I will be certain to pop back in and see all your beautiful pups
  23. Sorry for loss to Hotwyr ~ it is sad and really sux ey? I guess my saving grace is I didn't have to watch any of these babies suffer to you and your girl
  24. Thanks everyone. I gave her another dose of oxy last night to help get rid of the black crap she is still expelling. She stayed indoors with us until we went to bed but then I let her out (she has always slept on the front veranda) when I went to bed, more so to let my exhaustion take hold and sleep I lay listening to her pace and whine for a while, she kept coming up to my bedroom window and stick her nose in and really tell me she wasn't happy, but I was that stuffed I must of fallen asleep. Woke this morning and she seems ok, came inside had her antibiotics and breaky and followed me about for a bit. She then went to her crate and started to tear up her mat so I really growled at her, she looked at me in shock and promptly lay down and went to sleep I'm sure she will be fine, probably better than me Its good to know everyones experiences as yes they are all different and react to things differently.
