  1. So sorry to hear this, I hope you guys are all doing ok.
  2. Like Sezz said dogs are the only animal that I could not be without. I love animals, especially dogs, horses, cows, sheep and chickens. I hope to have at least one of each once we move out to our block
  3. Old basketballs, footballs, volleyballs and netballs from my work (but NOT Futsal balls as between the ball skin and the bladder there is a layer of wadding and they get that EVERYWHERE!) Coconuts are another favourite and we get full dear antlers but you do need to be careful with these if there's more than one dog playing with them.
  4. I would definately get 2 but if you leave them open and they choose to sleep together then so be it! But definately have one each for the times you want to shut them in.
  5. DC you could try moving the tape down a bit so that it was a bit more annoying. With one of my dogs I have found that putting a sock over her muzzle works to get this trick started.... in the beginning I was only doing it to annoy her then turned it into training
  6. My Dad has a dog called Krusty, she was named after the guys my dad got her off, but I think it suits her as she is such a clown - off the Simpsons . She is the only dog I have ever met that I totally wish was mine (besides my own). I think when you get an older dog giving them a new name is great!!! To me it marks a new beginning for them, even if the name is nothing like the original. Having all rescue dogs I have only known the previous name of one of my dogs, sometimes still I yell it out - 3years on - just to see what her reaction is but honestly with this dog I could yell out anything and she would come. If you work at it, changing the name is easy. Say the new name, then treat and repeat!
  7. Does anyone know where I can buy the nina ottoson toys? She has a couple of toys that look like they might be suitable for big dogs - unfortunately I think any toy with small parts will just be eaten - I have smart dogs but they're also very powerful dogs and if they can just physically tear it apart - well that's always going to be option A... http://www.wagsalot.com.au/nina-ottosson.html
  8. Yes cars are worrying to him as well, so are birds that fly too low. He really does have a great character though when he isn't being daunted by things, there was a little bug crawling across the floor last night and he was playing with it, he'd gently put his paw on it then let it go and watch it for a bit then paw at it again. He loves my Froggy (the one in my avatar) they play together really well, chasing and wrestling and stealing toys from each other the running round like lunatics. Stimpy is way too serious for him and won't take him pawing at her and she tells him off. I think he just needs lots more socialisation and exposure to lots of things, the family who own him now aren't very experienced with dogs (they haven't owned one in over 12 years)and I think they are having a hard time with him. He is so intelligent though, and takes in anything you teach him, very easy to work with.
  9. Cool thanks, he really does notice every little sound. The neighbours come home and shut their car doors and he jumps up and runs around. I took him for a walk this morning and there was a little old lady on the other side of the street (at least 15m away), she was scuffing her feet badly and he freaked out and wouldnt cross the rosd! It took me a minute to realise what he was balking at. I have staffies so this sensitive dog thing is new ground for me
  10. I am baby sitting a rough collie for 2 weeks at my place, I have looked after him before but just for a weekend. He is very skittish and jumps at the slightest noise. I know these may well be environmental factors, but just wondering what collies are regularly like. My friends got him from some people who didnt have the time for him, he was about 4 or 5 months old then and is about 2 now.
  11. The thing that really sh!t me was that when the movie first came out everyone kept talking about how funny it was when he was running along side the car and they were holding his back legs up... no not funny.
  12. I think that when you name a child after either a parent or grandparent it's different as you yourself have not been the one who did the original naming, unless of course there is a situation like Perry's Mum just mentioned. I do get though how people are saying that it is a sign of how much you loved and respected your previous dog. Oceangirl I am with you, I don't think I could ever own another dog of the same breed unless I got it before my current dog passed, I know I have said this on here before and many times IRL but I will never own another Rotty, when I say it people think it's for bad reasons but no, it's the opposite, it's because he was the best dog ever and to put the expectations on another dog of being as great as he was would be totally unfair to any other dog.
  13. Froggy sometimes gets a McFlurry after a summer trial
  14. This is just about the exact comment I was going to write for my Froggy, the only bit that you lft out for me was the bit where they had also sucked all the helium out of the balloons at the party!! Stimpy I think would have a serious voice like the goose in Charlotte's Web.
  15. My animals names relate to something in their character or some thing that has had a big impact on my life around the time I got them eg, ICE was named partly after Ice man out of Top Gun and partly because of my love for Vanilla Ice and Froggy due to her jumping. So I don't think I will ever end up reusing a name. I know a girl who had 2 or 3 dogs called Roxy, I think it was because it was around the time the Roxy brand was super cool.
  16. Great to hear you are going to work on this The bolded part is an area that you need to hone your skills on, with a dog like Missy this is something you cannot afford to miss.
  17. That is so sweet. It brought back the memories of when I got my first pup when I was a couple of years younger than Chloe is now and the relationship I built with him. Ah the unbreakable bond between a child and their dog
  18. My Froggy and Saxon were inseperable from the moment they came together, I always made sure I did different activities with them though so that they did have apart time. Then Stimpy came along, she got on great with Saxon but in the beginning her and Froggy managed to tolerate each other, now they get on fine but nothing like the relationship between Froggy and Saxon. Stimpy now has Chevy as her best bud, they are nearly a spitting image of each other there's just 30kg difference in them
  19. Your council area does not seem to be adequately addressing barking dog concerns. Would you seek for there to be by laws that make for exercise and brain stimulation to be compulsory for barking dogs? Or trainers? Do you think a council should differentiate between 'genuine reason' and 'ungenuine reason'? Barking is normal, but there is no doubt that barking disturbs many people in many neighbourhoods each year. Yes I do believe people should sitmulate their dogs physically and mentally - should this be an enforcable law if the dog has had barking complaints yes I think it probably should be but it would be a hard one to enforce unless the council put on a course that barking dog's and their owners were forced to attend (similar to people who have committed certain crimes then have to go attend courses). I believe reasonable barking is barking that does not continue for prolonged periods of time, eg unwelcome people enter your property uninvited your dog barks you go and address the issue, same as if a cat comes in. I do not believe that someone walking past your house with a dog is reason for your dog to bark. I will not accept this at all, it is just a habit, the dog sees another dog, it barks the people continue walking past and out of sight, your dog believes IT was the cause of them no longer being there, it barked and it got rid of them, this happens everytime someone walks past and your dog thinks that they are just wonderful at getting rid of other dogs. The dog passing by is not intruding on my dog's space so I have trained them that this is ok.
  20. sorry such a SA word that always makes me giggle
  21. I have 3 wobbler kongs that are brilliant but unfortunately don't get used anymore since I switched my dogs to a raw food diet. I should remember to get something I can put in them... maybe a few biscuits for a treat??
  22. Wishing Erny all the best for a speedy recovery. I am not a sewer but I hope something beautiful comes together for her.
  23. I find the laws to be fairly vague in my council area, I personally cannot stand barking dogs and have a few around my house. The one across the road I have reported countless times, eventually they covered all the areas it could see out of it's yard to the street, which has made it become a bit quieter. I feel VERY sorry for this dog, it is constantly tied up and have never seen it out of it's yard. The other dogs that barked at every person who walked passed did get out of their yard - but not to be walked by their owners it was just when they escaped. Luckily they let their house get into such a state it became unlivable and the landlord had to move them out!! Ahh nice and quiet - I just hope he doesn't move them back in when he fixes it. I don't believe what they do around here is adequate, I think honestly the only way of fixing it is through (with these dogs) exercise and brain stimulation, and if this is done and the dog still barks I believe they should be made to get a trainer in to work on the issue with their dog. I cannot stand barking dogs unless they are barking for a genuine reason, and to me genuine reasons are unwelcome people on your property, stray dog or cat on your property pretty much nothing else is allowed with my dogs. It's they way they were brought up and they know what's accepted.
  24. I either use a trap that they can get into alive then you drop the whole trap in water to drown them, the good thing about those ones is that you can catch more than one in a night. I also use the grey plastic ones in small places like next to the fridge or stove. Sometimes if it grosses me out too much a just pick the trap up in a plastic bag and throw the whole thing out
