  1. http://www.centralwesterndaily.com.au/news...en/1758184.aspx Have a read of this - a perfect example of why dogs on farms need a secure enclosure - I really don't think these dogs were stolen.
  2. Probably a common thing but yesterday one of the kids at work told me that her mum has gone to tafe and learnt how to microchip because then she can save lots of money on all the puppies and kittens they breed. It makes me sick, they make so much money on the way they currently run their 'breeding program'(dogs and cats that live outside in bird cages, chuck food in the gate and move on to the next cage and half the time they don't even notice for days after the kittens are born), and now she saves another $25 on each puppy and kitten!
  3. There are some breeders in the NT and one in Sydney that I know of.
  4. At obedience I use to always get into trouble for saying Froggy before I asked her to do anything then I realised it was because of the two dog thing. If you are working with two dogs in close proximity and want them to do different things (eg when they are doing a trick that requires them both but theyeach have a different part to play) you want them to know which one you are speaking to.
  5. Just about all the dogs we ever had on the farm came as pups so just learnt to stick around, but when my grandfather went into the nursing home his lab had to come live with us. We just gave him an entire securely fenced paddock to live in (we have like a hospital paddock next to the house, about 5 acres, so he had that). If you find yourself spending more time on the farm I would build a pen for Kane and just have him out while you are outside to start with. Then after a few weeks maybe sit inside and just watch him. I dont think I would ever really trust him to hang about if you were not focused on him especially if he may have a tendency to chase or even be intreguied (sp?) by stock, the risk is not worth it.
  6. I have always wanted to really test out Stimpy's recall and yesterday I created that opportunity, we went to the farm and I knew she would love to chase some rabbits, so I let her do it a couple of times then I decided it was time for the test, she was in full pelt about 200meters away from me and with one call of her name she came bounding back!!! I have never doubted her recall, just wanted to really test it! It was such a beautiful site, she has the most adorable run, she is like a springbok, she runs then springs then runs again!
  7. I dig my metal buckets into the ground and it also helps to keep the water extra cool.
  8. My dad has a stumpy tail cattle dog who snaps at elbows when she gets excited, I think with her it is her hearding instinct. She loves hearding and it is like she wants to heard up people for the thrill of it.
  9. I know my dogs could never be trusted in an off leash situation (unless it is fully fenced) but I do quite often see people walking their dogs off lead in the street and have this tiny little thing inside me that says I wish I could do that with my dogs, BUT your post is the perfect reminder that yes dogs can be unpredicatable when it comes to instinct. And now that tiny bit inside me is gone. Glad your dog is fine. Lots of snuggles tonight for both of them I'm sure.
  10. I would be concerned that it may have bitten before dying - call a vet.
  11. My dogs are rescues so no pedigree there, but when it comes to my chickens it's pedigree all the way (although they are not show quality - I suppose that warning when I bought them is like buying a pedegree dog on limited register??) I breed my chickens and sell them to people who want nice friendly chooks who will lay them some eggs. And YES I am horrified at people who cross breed my breed of chickens as they are perfect the way they are and I do not understand why anyone would want to deviate from perfection!
  12. I use to get the "you should let them off lead as it is better for them", when I had a dog aggresive dog. I thought it wasn't fair to my other dogs to keep them away from leash free parks just beacause my boy was dog agressive, so I did what I believed to be the responsible thing by keeping him on lead and staying far away from other people in the park (our leash free park is something like 15acres so it is possible to stay very far from other dogs). It was amazing how many people use to tell me (after their dog had rushed up to us and been all in his face) just to let him off as he would be much more relaxed and the situation would be fine. Yes in some situations this may be true but not in the case of this dog, I knew this dog inside out and NO he would NOT have been better being let off. Hope your dog doesnt have any side effects from this instance.
  13. Not good BUT the outcome was good AND I am 100 percent certain that you learnt from that and if that type of situation ever occurs again you wont freeze (or maybe you won't even let go of the lead). Life is full of learning experiences.
  14. When I was in Tassie there was an ad on TV for pure bred labradoodles Who can afford to put an ad on TV?? I suppose only those who sell their cross breeds for HUGE money and have HEAPS of litters att at once
  15. Froggy my tan staffy girl ALWAYS gets called a boy, she plays rough and marks her territory, the only girly thing about her is the way she wraps her front legs around my neck and hugs me when I get down on my knees. Stimpy is very delicate and girly, Chevy is just a big boofer boy.
  16. I have just returned from a 4 week road trip - I did not take the dogs as we were travelling in a ute and it would have been too hot for the dogs on the back and we were going into a LOT of national parks. Even though we did not have the dogs with us I always chose dog friendly accommodation over that that was not, just to give support to these businesses (but gee I hope I didn't take a spot away from someone who was actually travelling with their dogs), and on all the evaluation sheets I showed my support for them being dog friendly. Even though I have 3 dogs and would be excluded from this place I don't have a problem with that, there has to be a limit somewhere. What if they upped the limit to 6??? Then the person who has 7 dogs would get sh!tty. You just can't satisfy everyone. My friend recently came back from staying at a dog friendly B&B that adevertised there was a yard available for you to leave your dog in if you wanted to go out without your dog but the fence was only 1m high. So she said she would have liked a secure place to leave him (not in the house though) so she could have gone out for dinner, and honesty about what you offer, I suppose would be my suggestions. Good luck with it!!
  17. I call the council at night and it will either go through to an after hours number or at least have an after hours number on their answering machine (and it actually says on it that they don't mind you calling it for stray dogs - I figure the person is being paid good money to be on call so I use it). They generally take the details and then call the ranger and give him the details. Or if I can catch the dog I do that then either take it to the RSPCA pens or take it home for the night.
  18. Bummer... Just got home from dog training... sounds like I missed a good one

  21. I said no I hadn't bitten off more than I could chew with my breed, BUT when I got her, was I prepared for all that comes with a one year old staffy from the pound HELL NO!! Froggy came into my life pre DOL, and she was the first Staffy I had owned. It was a huge learning curve for both of us, I could totally see why someone who really didn't give a hoot about putting any time into training had dumped her. In the past 6 and 1/2 years she has taught my so much about dogs, myself and patients. After having owning the most gentle, obliging well mannered Rotty for the 13years prior this it was a real shock to the system
  22. We have a large population of a religion similar to the Amish in our town and when one of the local airports closed down they purchased the land and ran a puppy mill out of the hangars. This religion does not keep pets of any type, they see all animals just as stock, either to be eaten or to be sold and make money from. I was very pleased to see the other day when I went passed that they are now a machinery business out of the hangar, it is no longer a puppy mill. My only hope is that they didn't just move it somewhere else.
  23. Haha the long list sounds like me The kennel got every bit of detail they could possibly need plus more - right down to what was to be done with her if she happened to pass away while I was gone.
  24. I recently had to leave one of my dogs in a kennel for a month (the other 2 I felt comfortable enough to leave at home and have someone come and feed and walk them for me). I was VERY worried about her and stressed about it. I left her lots of toy to play with as I feared she would get very bored and I hoped she would chew on them. She is a lunatic dog - very full on and highly energetic but put her in a kennel situation and she totally shuts down, gets into the back corner of the run and lays on the bed. 4 days into my trip I called the kennel to see how she was doing, they went "She is eating and drinking but not playing with anything." That immediately let me know she was ok but not happy. When I went to get her I opened the pen she jumped up to say hi, I put her lead on and she ran like crazy to get out of there, she drug me to the car SO fast. Less than one week on she is fine, she has not been scarred by the month of at all. Your dog will adapt
