Sorry to hear of your loss. I would not get two pups or 2 dogs of the same age - more so for my benefit than anything else. I wouldn't want them to be headed for rainbow bridge around the same stage. Currently I have a 7yr old medium sized dog and two 5yr old dogs (one large breed and one small), I probably would have preferred a bit more of an age gap than that but when the right dog (or boyfriend with a dog the same age as your own dog) comes along you sometimes just can't say no. But in saying that I do think that the little one will be around for a lot longer than the other 2.

Guide Dogs - What Were They Thinking?
rastus_froggy replied to KismetKat's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes this does exist, there's a blind guy here in town who retired his guide dog a few years back due to health problems (the dog, not the guy) and there was a story in the paper about the family he was placed with. The guy was given a new dog and then last year the paper did another story to say that the old guide dog had passed away. I thought it was nice of them. Sux that these elderly people were not given an older dog. -

Back Yard - How Small Is Too Small?
rastus_froggy replied to samoyedman's topic in General Dog Discussion
My dog is penned unless I am in the backyard with her as she is a notorious fence jumper, her pen is smaller than the yard you described, she is walked daily and she is one of the fittest dogs I have ever met! My other dogs who aren't penned barely use any of the yard for most of the day, they just lay about until they decided it is time to chase each other. -
Hope all is ok. Mollie is adorable , Mischa is cute too.

DOL motivates me to do stuff, not only dog related either, there are great ideas in off topic to get you cooking and gift making! -
Is It Right To Change A 7 Yr Old Dogs Name?
rastus_froggy replied to Chocolate's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think it's fine, to the it is just a command for them to give you attention. Trained properly the change over will be very smooth and be of no concern to the dog at all. -

DOL has also taught me how superly important a recall can be and great ways of making sure your dog achieves a 100% recall -

OMG that looks like something Dee usually finds when we go walking in the bush One of the many joys of canine companionship I think it all started out when someone was putting heaps of eggs under her chickens and she thought her chickens were laying lots of eggs each day instead of one and this little thing was her way of getting back at her brother in law??? (I think that was who the joke was being played on). It went on for a good while and you just had to keep going back each day to get the newest edition of what had happened!! -

I can't even remember who posted the story but it was part of a big practical joke - this very well crafted "creature" made me laugh so much I saved the picture, someone else maybe able to remember who posted it and maybe we can relive it again!! -
I am another who does not use the stay command, I want her to sit until told otherwise and remain highly alert while sitting there - sometimes I can be walking along with her off leash and ask her to sit, I walk off and forget to release her, then I wonder where she is She is the first dog I have used this method with and will never go back. To get bomb proof stays I started with very close stays, added distractions then length of time the distance., but each time I added distance I reduced the distractions and the duration in the beginning, then put these back in at varying levels . I have learnt so much in the last few years and Stimpy has been trained very differently to my other dogs, I use to think they had to learn to drop, stand and walk on a loose lead. Other than being trained in agility and a few tricks there are very few other things I have ever taught her, she can sit (which is also a bomb proof stay), a 100% recall - recently tested by calling her off a full speed persuit of a rabbit through the paddock, and I taught her to walk by my side off leash and then when you add a lead you have loose leash walking.

I use "go toilet" If they go in the agility ring it is a disqualification.

Because it is not the dog's fault and ultimately it is the dog who will pay the price by most likely being hit by a car. Yeah sometimes the owner really won't give a crap about the dog being out, but it could be a genuine lost dog and the owner could be highly destressed by the situation. If it doesn't have a tag with a phone number and you don't have time to take it to a vets to see if it is microchipped, take it to the pound - wouldn't you rather someone do that than leave it on the street if it were one of your dogs? Because you love dogs and you care for their well being.

Fresh Start So Everyone Can Have A Go
rastus_froggy replied to Steve's topic in General Dog Discussion
I came here in 2006 after being in a conversation with Teebs and Mina and they were astounded by the fact that I didn't know about DOL. How did I not know about this place of amazing knowledge, stories to make you laugh so much that you cry: the story involving this little creature being a prime example The tales told in Rainbow Bridge of those who have lost their friends who they have had with them for over a decade and those who have lost their best friend in much shorter times, I have cried countless times. Rainbow Bridge helped me so much with the loss of one of my dogs last year - although I never posted about the loss as it hurt way to much and am only now just beginning to be able to talk about him and his life, Rainbow Bridge and it's wisdom helped me through. The Dog Sports thread is FULL of amazing ideas, trainers and of course brilliant dogs. The people here are great! Sometimes things get heated but hey thats life. I have gained much knowledge from DOL. -
Oh that is so cute, I think I might get my little Stimpy (AKA Springbok) to give that one a go!

How Often Do You Bathe Your Dog?
rastus_froggy replied to chichihuahua's topic in General Dog Discussion
Once every 3 or 4 months. Although they did get an unexpected bath yesterday as they had FLEAS None of my dogs have EVER had fleas before, I was horrified. When I went to buy the shop out of every type of flea stuff they had the guy said the season has been great for fleas. -
I know that you are only in the consideration stage but just thought I should throw this in anyway (and you are a smart person because you are on DOL and hopefully would never get done by a scammer but still thought I should just throw this warning out there) There was an article in our local paper this week about someone who was buying a JS and it all turned out to be fake. She had seen photos and they had emailed her a copy of the registration papers but it all turned out to be a scam and she had already paid for the dog. So buyers beware!

When I read it, I just automatically presumed it was 2 dogs.
