Hitting The Ring For The First Time
TwinSpirits replied to angelsophie's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thanks everyone for the congrats. angelsophie - Taite's attention is because I am holding a bit of chicken, have food in your hand and Taite is your best friend lol. poocow - He will be in Minor Puppy at the Spring Fair, 20, 21 & 22 November we entered the three days after all. sammy_ballerina - Yes Taite is often complimented on his spotting and pigmentation. His ribbon is for opposite baby puppy in show at the dalmatian specialty, his sister got Baby Puppy in show, but she always wins against Taite because she has an experienced handler who can stack her lovely, though they both bunny hop around the ring. I dont run that well either, I have to memorize the ring a bit because my vision isnt great and I am certain I never actually do a proper triangle and my run around is never a circle and when I am asked for the up and back I almost run into the poles lol. Cavalier - He came second, Taite won baby puppy dog, his sister won baby puppy bitch, they had a run off together and his sister won so Taite got opposite baby puppy in show and his sister got baby puppy in show. We havent done many shows yet, but the judges I have had have all been very patient and helped me out when I have stuffed up and very pleasant with Taite so it has been rather nice and the nerves arent there as much now, I still get nervous just before going in the ring but not like before my first go, and Taite has gotten alot better we are learning together. -

Hitting The Ring For The First Time
TwinSpirits replied to angelsophie's topic in General Dog Discussion
We have one more show with the breeder there and then we are on our own as she stops showing to work the farm. Breeder is lending us her gazebo as we came into a problem and the money we were going to get a gazebo with we have to pay on the car. It can be erected by yourself with a bit of difficulty but it is much easier with help. It is much more pleasant to have in the heat and me and Nathan like to have our own space, without a gazebo we dont really get that. -

congrats poocow! Jess you should be fine, I was so nervous my first go but before I went in the breeder told me that it doesnt matter what anyone thinks at the end of the day it is me and my dog and I am the one who has to live with him and if I am happy with whatever happens that is all that matters, not to pressure myself to have a perfect puppy, it relaxed me a bit especially when Taite decided to bunny hop instead of trot around the ring. We have our third show on Sunday, Non Sporting at Erskine Park. I am a bit nervous it is Taite's first time in sweepstakes but I am sure we will do fine, he has taken to ignoring me a little bit lately since he got himself a taste of some cheese, will need super tasty treats lol. -
Eating Everything Off The Ground
TwinSpirits replied to TwinSpirits's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks everyone for the help, have tried some of the suggestions, went for a walk with Taite at the park today, he didnt pick up anything off the ground the whole time, just sniffed around and explored, he went to pick up a big stick at the end, but left it when I called him away. Was a very pleasant walk and none of us were stressed. Will keep working on things and using the suggestions. Mym - thanks, I have wanted to get the crate games DVD just havent had the finances yet, hopefully soon. -

Thankyou so much for that video, I learnt heaps and tried it with Taite already learnt to leave food on the floor inside, he learns quick and is so smart I just have trouble keeping up with him lol. -

Thanks for the suggestions, we do this with things inside and in the garden, and I already do the swapping for a treat and higher value rewards. The breeder also suggested with the drink bottles and Taite does play with them. -

yeah- I was mortified when I had to do it with Hamlet (post surgery to remove sticks etc ) BUT - after a short time- he was much more interested in sniffing, running and playing, than constantly searching for, and eating stuff. result? much more relaxed owner, and dog. Mind you, he was not under 12 months... and still had plenty of chew time with meaty bones/kongs/etc.... and when he grew some brains, and was a bit more settled the muzzle was not needed much I do still use it if we have had visitors who may have thrown away BBQ bones etc- or there is new junk lying around.... Im not sure how much he got when with his litter, when I visited him from 4 weeks onwards there wasnt alot of toys, we brought our own for the pups to have, they were in a run outside and Taite was the only pup eating and chewing rocks and all. I know he got alot when he was with us after we got him and we have lots of chew toys and kongs etc for him. Thankyou that makes sense with the muzzle, I think I will use that as a last resort as need be, will try with the bell and keeping a toy for going out to keep him amused outdoors. -

Thankyou for the suggestions, will get Nathan to do the bell for me, that would be very useful. yes he enjoys kongs and iceblocks. He actually eats the stuff, often find it coming out the other end, I dont think Id be as worried if it was just playing. We do TOT and NILF. It is very compulsive and he does it even inside, people I dont know even comment on it when I am out with him. With the muzzle will it stop him doing it when he is older, and no longer has the muzzle on? sounds kind of extreme to me but willing to try if it works. -

He is just coming up to four months. No I am still working on the leave it, he doesnt fully grasp it yet and the way he goes Id be commanding leave it every second. I never have him offlead he is always on lead next to me or near me, a normal lead I wouldnt have him off lead at this age yet. Im not sure I understand about preventing him reaching the item, it doesnt matter where I am he will grab something, if there is nothing there he will turf up the grass roots and all and eat that, do I pull him away with the leash? Hoping I am making sense? -
Have had a bit of a problem with Taite since I got him in that he eats/chews everything. I know he is still a puppy but if I can somehow manage the problem now I would like to get it under control before he ends up in surgery from something stuck inside him. When I take him out as soon as he is out of the car he is picking up things to chew and eat and I am constantly having to fish things out of his mouth, most occasions I can get him to drop it and swap it for something else, sometimes he listens to the leave it command which I have also taught him but often he clamps down and ignores me. It isnt just out and about though he constantly looks for things to chew inside and in the backyard despite me giving him interesting toys and rotating them each day. I am very concerned because I have had to fish out dangerous things out of his mouth and a few times they were shards of glass, I dont want him to get sick from eating something bad either. Im not really sure what to do at this stage, I keep training the leave it and getting him to drop things out of his mouth but really would like to stop him grabbing everything of the ground, I try and watch but my vision isnt all that great and I often miss things and its so hard to stop him eating everything he sees and someone be talking to me at the same time. I feel that in some way I have done something wrong with his training I just dont know where I went wrong and he somehow is reinforced when chewing things on the ground.

Hitting The Ring For The First Time
TwinSpirits replied to angelsophie's topic in General Dog Discussion
Me and Taite did better on Saturday, he actually heeled and trotted and let his teeth be looked at and stood nicely even with other dogs near him, not something I could get him to do before. We only got baby puppy in his breed but I was happy with how we went. Not sure how we will do in the next show, have missed two show training classes so havent had a chance to practice much with him. The gazebos from when I have gone some people set them up the night before and leave them dropped down and raise them on the day, I also see others mark out an area with rope and tent pegs so I think it is personal preference and depends on the rules of the grounds as well as to when you can set it up or not at the area. -

We are back from our first show, met poocow and morgan, was lovely to meet you both I tried to find you cassie01 but was a bit lost so didnt get to meet you, maybe next time. We had fun, Taite as usual bunny hopped around the ring, but was good experience, I forgot a few things being so nervous but will probably do better next time. Our next show is Dalwood at erskine park next Saturday. -

Dalmatian is spelt with an A not an O. The spots are relevant they should be clear - round and well defined, not run together and be about the size of a five to twenty cent coin and well distributed, the ones on the extremeties, legs, tail etc should be smaller than on the body. The edges should not blend into the ground colour so as to appear grey or have a dark halo. With Taite's litter, some one of the boys had too much spotting and other had too little spotting. The black spots have to be a shiny jet black, liver spotted should be a rich liver brown. I have also been told some judges like to view the Dalmatian from both sides to see how spotted they are on both sides not just the show side, so I have to teach Taite to heel both on the left and right of me. You also cannot have patched dogs, or dogs with black and liver spots together (tricolour) or lemon spots, and they have to have a good pigment around the eye, one of the pups in Taite's litter was missing a bit of pigment around the eye and was thought wouldnt be suited to showing but it closed up as he grew. Of course the spots are only part of it, there is also the physique of the Dally, and the eye colour etc. I am hoping that made some sense. -

Hi I am Tithen, Im not sure when I will be first time in the ring, I only just got my puppy and be a month or more before he can go in the ring, and go to show training classes. I have been to a few shows to watch and learn though and will go to show training classes. I guess I am lucky I have the breeder living close by that I can go to for help and support and would most likely see her at shows as well. poocow- where do you do the show training classes? I have been looking at a few but not really sure where I will go. -
