  1. Christina, thinking has changed dramatically in the past few years. It is now understood and accepted by most modern vets that calcium has a valid place during whelping. It is also more gentle on the uterus than oxytocin but can have similar effects on a uterus that is already "irritable". Oxytocin administered at some parts of the labour is like using a machine gun to hunt rabbits. The automatic use of oxytocin and other synthetic hormones isn't as widely accepted these days at all, and neither is the routine dosage of artificial calcium during gestation and lactation or the feeding of puppy foods to pregnant bitches. Many of these things came about due to the lack of understanding of the benefits of naturally occurring chemicals within the body at various stages of the life of the dog.
  2. You should know how I feel about it by now my bondaged one. Very handy to have on hand for use during whelping and it will not have any long term effects simply because of the fact that the bitch will use it for either stimulation of contractions or milk let down, or both and very little, if any, will remain in the system after her work is done. Certainly no need to continue with calcium supplementation after whelping if you are already feeding a diet that contains sufficient naturally sourced calcium.
  3. Paypal isn't that expensive. The puppy I sent to Japan recently wasn't a cheapie and the fee deducted by Paypal was only $15.
  4. and they are not easily intimidated, AND they are bossy :D ours rule the roost, I've had devons since the 70s and highly recommend them. No idea what to do about intros etc, or prey drive, sorry. It's never been an issue here. I've got Staffords and a Greyhound and the Devons stand their ground. If something doesn't run, it can't be chased. My dogs also know the difference between the cats and say a possum or rabbit in the paddocks. Even if the cats are outside with us, they aren't considered to be game by my dogs yet if the dogs see a bunny in the distance....they're gone!
  5. In the short term, a cotton sport sock with a panty liner inside it and a nappy pin to fasten it will make a surprisingly good substitute.
  6. I've never had an issue with my dogs and Devon Rex cats. Devons are very doglike in nature and love to play. If you like an affectionate (ie velcro) cat that is a cross between a dog, a cat and a spider monkey, wrapped in a curly cat suit then the Devon might suit.
  7. I received payment for my recent export to Japan via PayPal. Back in the days prior to the internet I paid for my imports from the UK, USA and New Zealand via either International Money Order or a Bank Draft in their currency.
  8. Here you go...this is the last email address from which I received a reply from Liberty, as pasted from my address book joan nutt <[email protected]>
  9. Whenever I've received emails from Liberty, they've been in the name of Joan Nutt (????) or something like that as I recall. I'm sure Liberty are still operating though. Maybe if you contact Pet Network or any of the Liberty stockists, they will have a number they can give you for Liberty??
  10. Koda likes to destroy her children's toys. And ONLY her children's toys. She'll leave everything else in the place alone yet stand there methodically disembowelling anything that the youngsters enjoy playing with! BIATCH! The rest of them like to destroy YELLOW buckets. For some reason I can buy buckets in any colour other than yellow and they survive for yonks but the minute a yellow one appears, it is deaded pronto!
  11. Had two of the first in my November 2009 litter of 9 Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Apparently it is a sign of a fairly late puppy demise and absorption so potentially my litter could have been 11.
  12. They don't and I know that for a fact having been involved with the breed for many years and knowing the breeder involved.
  13. it may not be typical but it's an advertised price for a pedigree puppy and therefor valid for this list. Am aware of that, but as you yourself pointed out when you posted that it may be a reduced price, I thought I would confirm that it most definitely IS a reduced price.
  14. Thank you! And my apologies cos I think we beat your little 'un for the MIG award. It was a ripping lineup actually. A couple of people commented that the MIG lineup was probably as good as, if not better than the group itself!
  15. Ta lovey! AND you've seen him so you know that piccies don't do him justice either!
  16. Agree with BB. They have to be registered in the breeders' name first in Tasmania as well.
  17. They charge you more for after hours pickup...a LOT more!!!!!
  18. Roger has hit Minor Puppy and from his first two shows in that class has been awarded two Minor In Groups. At his last show, he was also Reserve CC and RUBOB to the Open Dog in a breed entry of 15. Very pleased with how my boy is progressing. We snapped these informal shots last Monday...totally unstacked, all free standing or free baiting. And this last one is what he thought of having his photo taken so many times!
  19. Absolutely not! It was certainly recommended in years gone by but dog food has undergone such dramatic advances in recent years that it is no longer necessary. In fact, in some breeds, I would think it could be potentially hazardous. Provided the bitch is being fed a good quality diet prior to becoming pregnant then NOTHING needs to change, except for perhaps the frequency and amounts of feeding as the pregnancy advances. Extra calcium can be provided through natural means that are more readily and safely absorbed by the body which will also save the breeder money in the long run as well.
  20. Can tell you unequivocally that the price here for the American Cocker is DRASTICALLY marked down!!!!! My guess is that the breeders want to do a quick offload at that price because it is most certainly not typical for an American Cocker of ANY age!!!!!
  21. Add me to the list. Uncle Albers/Great Barko are the only things that keep weight on my greyhound in colder weather. The Staffords which are fed it (some have other stuff instead) are shiny and sleek looking and the American Cockers had great coats on it as well. And I also recently found out that a lot of the local greyhound trainers feed their race/breeding dogs on it.
  22. I am with you on this Steve! I am not in favour of recycling crates/hire crates especially for the transportation of puppies, you don't know what has been in them beforehand and I am always conscious of cross contaminations because I do not believe that the crates can always be sterlised/disinfected to the best levels if crates are not removed from the airport for treatment. When a new PP40 can be picked up for around $55-75 compared to hiring at around $45 the additional money is money well spent for the added protection. And having just used wayrod's transportation services, I can vouch for this and his complete professionalism! I'd like to know who the company was, they need to be accountable for their actions and if people don't know who they are, they cannot possibly be forewarned.
  23. Don't know about other breeders but this concerns me greatly! Puppies NEED handling to stimulate them neurologically and to accustom them to handling when they are older. My puppies are handled every day of their lives from birth and I have never yet had a bitch reject a puppy due to human handling in 24 years of breeding.
  24. Yep, I hate to agree but it has been my experience that generally if a bitch is moving a puppy away, she is trying to remove a "faulty" puppy from the litter.
