We saw a dog on one of the television shows getting a beer from the fridge for his master. Mr Ellz was rather scathing of Woger's abilities as a companion so I thought it might be cool to see what he actually did if I got a beer from the fridge and gave it to him and told him to "take it to Dad". All was well until he sunk his tooth into the can, the can hissed beer at him, he dropped it in a panic and then stood barking at it until we hoomans recovered from our laughing attack and picked it up. Now, he views ALL cans of beer with great suspicion and starts barking if you dare to put one near him..... FAIL!!!!

WHAT? You mean it isn't absolutely normal to have full blown conversations with your dog? . . . . . . OOPS!!

My Girl's Urine Is Leaving Burn't Patches In Our New Lawn?
ellz replied to BC Crazy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Try it in water and NOT with Dog Rocks...I had less success with it on food than I did in water, probably because during the day they do tend to drink a fair bit so they're actually getting more than on one or two meals per day overall. -
My Girl's Urine Is Leaving Burn't Patches In Our New Lawn?

No, bathing in ACV wouldn't do a great deal at all. ACV works from the inside out by changing PH levels of the saliva and tears which is where bacteria accumulate to cause the staining. In an old dog, I'd be looking more at physical causes, as mentioned teeth but also eyes and ears before relying upon ACV. The best ACV to use is a pure ACV, I use the bulk ones from farm produce stores generally but if I cannot get that then my second choice is any that is ONLY apples. Many people don't read labels and aren't aware that many vinegars contain caramel flavouring, other additives and preservatives which effectively undo any good effects. My "scientific" amount is a good slosh per bucket but in most cases you will need to work up gradually because many animals won't drink water if anything has been added to it...best to start small and work up to as strong as you can get it before they turn their noses up and start queueing up at the toilet door so that they can drink out of the "pure" ceramic water bowl! -

Apple Cider Vinegar really does work. It is also good for other things....cleaning, arthritis, UTI's etc. Also, my Lowchen arrived with very stained facial furnishings around his mouth and eyes (this is caused by bacteria). After a couple of months on drinking water with ACV added, his face is barely stained and his tearstaining is minimal. -
Now for you Ms Cullen! I left you until last..... ;) Thank you again for handling my boy to his BOB and then onto his Best In Group! And as always, thank you for your faith in Woger and your friendship. If it weren't for you nagging me, I'd never bother entering shows, let alone actually go! :D

Thanks Jbea! I have no doubt we'll get them eventually...it's just that showing isn't a priority in my life these days. In fact I think I counted up a total of 15 shows in Roger's 2 and a bit years on earth and about 6 of those were in baby puppy!

Won't happen in Tasmania unless it is picked up by the RSPCA, or by one of the few councils with a microchip scanner. It SHOULD be routine but sadly isn't and probably won't become so for some time to come.

Was the featherduster this afternoon, but still couldn't wipe the smile off my face after an absolute ROOSTER of a morning!! Our friend Jess Cullen piloted Woger (Ellz Forever Now) to a nice 14 point Best of Breed, which led into an even nicer 25 point Best Exhibit In Group and we finished off the day when I took over the lead and my boy took us to a lovely State Bred In Show! We're over halfway to his title now from 3 challenges and only a handful of shows!

Or you just can't be bothered writing the whole name out... I'm not going to type out American staffordshire terrier every time I talk about my dogs. AmStaffy is much easier ;) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk You don't have to, that is the "Amstaff" :)

Ok To Advertise Puppies In The Classifieds?
ellz replied to Mrs Rusty Bucket's topic in General Dog Discussion
Donning flame suit.... As I stated in a previous post, I breed to KEEP not to sell but the reality is that I cannot keep everything and so occasionally I will have carefully bred, well-reared and socialised puppies available to SUITABLE pet homes. Note that I say SUITABLE....and yes, I'm well aware that my idea of suitable doesn't necessarily correspond with somebody else's idea of suitable. I actually saw that firsthand recently whilst a friend of mine was selling a litter of registered purebred puppies...she dealt with certain issues and enquiries in a far different way to the way that I do and to be honest (and she is aware of this) there were some of her puppy purchasers who wouldn't have been successful at purchasing a puppy from me for various reasons. But, each to their own. Now that said...I do believe that breeders should be breeding to better the breed. And that is what the ANKC and State controlling bodies Codes of Ethics state. BUT....isn't breeding good quality, healthy, happy puppies for the companion market just as important? In some high-demand breeds, I personally am coming around to the mindset that if a breeder can safely manage the occasional litter of companion only puppies, then why should it be wrong to ensure that there is a healthy supply of correctly bred and reared puppies for the companion market? Why should the BYB and shonky millers be the only ones who can supply the market and potentially cause even more damage to breeds that are already in danger from overbreeding? Now I am not for one minute endorsing that every breeder should churn out puppies specifically for the pet market, but in some breeds (Staffords for instance), even my much-loved, healthy, happy companion puppies are a better proposition than the hundreds that are churned out by people who have no idea how to rear them, let alone health test which can potentially create untold problems in pet homes and in society, let alone the damage to the breed itself. At the very least, registered and reputable breeders will screen the homes more carefully, HOPEFULLY match puppies to purchasers and not just hand over a puppy to anybody who turns up with the money and then provide lifetime backup and support as well as (in an ideal world) being able to take back, or help to arrange alternatives for the dog down the track if circumstances change. We are never going to completely stop backyard breeding or farming, but I do think that certain trains of thought need to get on track for the present and think a little more about the future whilst they are at it. -
still waiting for a reply please :D ditto!

Ok To Advertise Puppies In The Classifieds?
ellz replied to Mrs Rusty Bucket's topic in General Dog Discussion
This. I have always advertised on online classifieds, breeder websites and even in the local rag. Even at times if I don't have any puppies for sale. If the reputable and responsible breeder doesn't get out there and "mix it" with the backyarders and general idiots then you are really just letting them get a toehold in the "market" and not leaving Joe Q with any options. I try to use MOST (most because not all people are receptive once they have made up their minds) opportunities to explain that their puppy should have certain health testing done, should have had specific health treatments, be microchipped and have been reared properly. I have always felt that it was important to educate and if I can speak to just one Joe Q and try to give them food for thought and that one person rethinks their plans to buy an "oodle" a "doodle" or a BYB puppy...then I have accomplished something. And with regards to having buyers lined up prior to a litter. Sometimes this is the case, sometimes not. The important thing however is that I breed to KEEP and not to sell. Once I have decided what I am keeping out of my litter, then I MAY have a puppy or two looking for a good forever home. After 26 years of breeding however, one thing I know is that you can have 15 prospective homes lined up, have a litter of 5 puppies born and you will invariably STILL be looking for homes for one, maybe two of the puppies. Sh!t happens in the real world and things change for people so Jane Doe who was SUPER DUPER keen on a puppy from you may have lost her job, house, grandma or whatever and is no longer in the market for a puppy. That's life. -
The problem with toxicity is that nobody really knows exactly HOW much is "bad" for each individual so it is best to just not risk ANY. For example, anecdotal evidence of a large breed dog eating a few small squares of chocolate and being very ill, yet a greedy toy poodle eats an entire large block and it doesn't even touch the sides. But that's not to say that the toy poodle hadn't reached its toxic "level" and the next time it happened, may not be a good ending. Kind of like filling a bucket slowly....lots of small amounts of water are ok but one day, it spills over. Chocolate contains theobromine which is dangerous. Rule of thumb is the darker the chocolate the more theobromine but as above, how much is too much?? Are you really willing to risk it? Onion causes Heinz anaemia which is basically small bubbles in blood vessels and veins which can rupture and cause the dog to bleed to death. Again, is it really worth the risk to your dog to find out whether or not it is particularly intolerant?

Frageria Vesca is also known as wood or alpine strawberry. My friends in the USA purchased it easily, I think from memory you would need to contact a homeopathic therapist here in Australia to obtain it. One of the companies that I know stock it is http://www.ppcherbs.com.au/homoeopathics.htm but I don't know if they sell direct to the public.
