I've seen anecdotal evidence to the effect that dogs which are raised outdoors from dogs which have also been raised outdoors are harder to toilet train and don't react the same way to indoors stimuli. Agreed, it does depend upon the breeder and their setup, but I tend to agree with MalteseLuna on this one.....
-
Absolutely...but it isn't fine to want a breed of dog to make YOU look a certain way.....there's a big difference.
-
Precisely why I have never bred often. Too many people who think they should own a Stafford and too few people who are actually what I term as "qualified". They aren't a breed for everybody, they aren't a breed for people who base their choice upon appearance. They aren't a breed for somebody who wants a dog which will be a social butterfly. They aren't a breed for people who will leave them alone for hours on end and then complain because their house and/or garden has had a dramatic "makeover". They are NOT a breed for somebody who isn't prepared to put in the hard yards to correctly raise and socialise them and help them to become a good member of society. And yes, I sound negative. It's because I've seen too often the by-products of a dog that has been purchased/adopted for the wrong reasons and then blamed because they had a bad owner..... Editing for spelling because I'm battling with new fingernails v touch typing......

Hard question to answer, but I'll try. I like a (dare I say it) "masculine' type dog, I like the appearance of a muscular dog and I like a dog that is willing to defend it's owner and property. In terms of temperament, I would say I prefer a dog that is CAPABLE of holding it's own in a fight, but takes a lot of pushing to do so. I'd like to think a stranger could approach me and my dog and be able to pat it. i hope that helps ! Cheers OK, not a Stafford then. I'm afraid as a breeder, I'm not fond of prospective purchasers who want a dog for appearance first and foremost. And Staffords make dreadful guard dogs...much better WATCH dogs....ie, WATCH the burglar come in the window, WATCH the burglar take the TV, HELP the burglar carry the DVD player and then jump in the car to go for a car ride. Staffords are more than capable of holding their own in a fight, it is, after all, what they were bred for but they don't take a lot of pushing as a rule because quite often, the body language of the "pusher" is enough to have them on alert. Strangers can most certainly approach my dogs for pats, especially if they are under 3 feet tall....but I prefer they not do so unless I give permission.

My Stafford boy wouldn't. He puts up with all manner of bolshy, tail over the back, pushy behaviour from my adult male (entire) American Cocker which other dogs would take as an instant challenge. But that said, who knows what would happen in a dog park free-for-all. Seems that there are no rules or boundaries to behaviour there and with the wrong dogs it could be positively disasterous. And could I add here, I feel EXACTLY the same way about the "puppy kindergartens" that are fashionable now with many large vet clinics. Most are simply a juvenile version of the dog park, being run by junior vet nurses who have absolutely no idea about the needs of individual breeds and personalities. I never recommend my puppies be taken to these. Waiting until the puppy is old enough for a structured obedience class is far more sensible imo.

My Staffords over the years have mostly intensely disliked Boxers....I have no idea why they just have. There has never been any kind of incident. Maybe it is just because they can be so bouncy and "in your face"???
-
Could I just interject here as a breeder/owner of Staffords and say that I would always recommend a male Stafford over a female as a pet.....whether I've been unlucky or something else, I don't know...but I've always found the males to be a lot more tractable and easily dealt with. As has been mentioned in this thread, I too believe that the word "bitch" was coined for a female Stafford!!!

Just wanted to highlight that part of my previous post, seeing as the surrounding sentences have been commented on. And I just wanted to reiterate, 99.9% of responsible Stafford owners do not subject their dogs to the free-for-all that is the average local dog park. It simply isn't worth the angst. And no, it isn't the same as with absolutely any breed. When you own a bull breed, you take on a particular set of responsibilities. Some of these are not placing your dog in a situation that could endanger it, you or those around you. End of story.
-
I have absolutely no illusions that I COULD take my adult male Stafford to a dog park. However, there is no way that I actually WOULD do so!! The problem doesn't lie with my dog, it is the other dogs, or more particularly their owners, that are the issue. You only need to trawl through the posts here to read about the problems that DOL owners have had with other people and their dogs at dog parks. Why would you subject your dog to it??

I'd say yes. I used honey on sanitary pads on a horse which degloved its leg in a fence accident with very good results. PS. Westiemum, I may have commented in a kennel cough thread but Erny wouldn't have been specifically telling me anything new about the benefits of honey as I've been using it for a very long time.

I've been surrounded by dogs all my life, thankfully my parents were sensible people who have always believed that it is ESSENTIAL that children have pets and there have been many "special" dogs in my life. Since 1986 I've been breeding and exhibiting dogs and a few have come and gone who have been "extra special" but my ultimate heart dog is with me now. I bred him, he was one of 9 in his litter but from about the age of 2 weeks, he started to tug my heartstrings. At 3 weeks of age, he was the first to leave the nest and waddle over to climb on my lap and as he did, the name "Roger" popped into my head and it just stuck. I don't even really like the name but I figured he was telling me what his name was so it stayed. And he has literally been with me every day (except for a memorable week when he kept the Rajacadoo clan on their toes whilst I was interstate) and has never let me down. I adore this dog, he seems to reciprocate and I'm sure he reads my mind. I rarely have to tell him what to do, he anticipates my commands and he has shown me what devotion truly means. I'd be lost without him, he has been with me through thick and thin and some really nasty, torrid times of my life in the past almost 3 years. He has always been a champion in my eyes, so it was just the icing on the cake for him to gain the final points for his title last weekend. Oh and he'll always be with me....his face is tattooed on my leg! His name is pretty appropriate too....CH Ellz Forever Now... :)

Hello everybody....I'm all settled in now and have my cuteness down pat.... Luv Iris xx
-
I was going to suggest this too. This is a way to get rid of skin tags on humans too. Hadn't heard about rubbing alcohol on it though, just the string bit. Dental floss works too. Tritto....did this to a skin tag on one of my horses' faces. It didn't bother him at all and you couldn't even see where the tag came off.

I applied for Woger's title on Monday. Only had to list date, show name, judge and points for Tasmanian shows. Interstate shows have to have original CC attached to application....OR....a letter/email from interstate canine controlling body verifying the win/s.
-
Very easy night indeed. She slept in her crate on my bed and I only had to take her out twice. Both times she walked out, squatted and demanded to be picked up and taken back to bed! She is eating and drinking and doing all the other cuter stuff that puppies do! I am very happy with her!
-
She arrives in Hobart at approximately 4.30 this afternoon. Will share photos as soon as I can after we get home and get her settled and phone her breeder to let him know she has arrived! :)
-
Oh exciting!!! I have 2 more sleeps! Have you got everything bought and ready to go? I can't set mine up until after she is here as its a surprise and I don't want my kids not wanting to stay at grandmas because the new puppy is here. I get 2 nights alone with her before she meets the kidlets. Have you got a name yet?? Yep, this is my first of many new puppies so it's kind of "old hat" for me to get a new puppy. Her name is Iris :)

Depending upon the state controlling body they may accept a letter from the secretary of the club verifying the win so give them a call and ask them. Alternatively, contact the secretary of the club holding the show and they may be able to help you organise a replacement. I know when Mr Rimes' co-owner applied for his title in Victoria, I was missing a couple of certificates so I went into the Tas Dogs office here, pulled the relevant catalogues from their files and they verified the wins from their records and wrote a letter to that effect which VicDogs accepted in lieu of the certificates.

ONE MORE SLEEEEEEP!!!
-
Well, as suspected we didn't do anything much at the Royal, best we could do was the Reserve CC. BUT today at Dogfest, Mr Rimes won a contested BOB under the Columbian judge Mr Quinones!
-
Today my Stafford boy Roger (or Woger to his mates) won BOB and the last points needed to make him CHAMPION Ellz Forever Now!! Woger is my first homebred Stafford champion and the absolute love of my life and I'm very proud (and excited). Mr Rimes wasn't left out either as he won BOB under the Columbian judge. Not a bad day at the office! :D
