It's mine - it's a bit dressy but I wear it when I go to the farmers markets in winter as its so warm. I felt pretty self conscious in it at first as it does gather a bit of attention, but I've learned to get over myself as its gorgeous and looks so lovely and feminine :)

Portarlington is lovely too, and closer for you than Point Addis. Addis is a surf beach and Portarlington is in the bay, so quite different, but nice for paddling. I've not been for a few years but it used to be fairly quiet - everyone seems to go to Queenscliff instead. I rarely came across nudists at Point Addis, and never in winter :laugh: .

Point Addis near Anglesea? Not sure if it is too far away for you. I believe it's a nudist beach but when I lived in Geelong, I took my dogs there most weekends over winter and almost always had the beach to myself (except for some surfers). It's a beautiful beach. There are a lot of steps to get down though.

Kirislin, corns are quite common in greyhounds. You can treat them at home yourself with some wart kill and a scalpel blade (google should tell you how to do this) or a greyhound vet can cut them out.

We have a male Affenpinscher on breeders terms. It is working well for us (and hopefully his owner) - we get to enjoy his company each day, and she can use him for breeding and take him to shows when she likes. I'm sure it's not an arrangement that would suit everyone but we're comfortable with it :)

The retirement question (ie why do most greyhounds stop racing) left off what is, I believe, the most common reason why greyhounds no longer race - they are too slow to be competitive.

I think perhaps things are getting a bit confused here. There are many people involved in the industry: Owners (motivated by the desire to have fun racing a dog. Winning is a bonus. They may also bet, but they don't BUY a dog to bet on it) Breeders (motivated by the desire to produce a good race dog. Prize money in Victoria is very good - first place in most city races is around $5500. Breeders may also be owners. As with owners, they may bet, but they don't BREED a dog to bet on it) Trainers (motivated by the desire to win. They may also be owners and breeders. And as with them, they may bet but they don't TRAIN a dog to bet on it) Punters (motivated by the desire to win money by betting) It costs around $20,000 to get a litter of pups to break in stage. The owner pays this. The owner also pays for the pups to be broken in. Most trainers will train a race dog for a 50/50 split of prizemoney (there are no ongoing fees for the owners).

I don't think the "1000 are adopted annually" is anywhere near correct. The figures also don't take into account all the retired dogs sitting on their racing owners couches, or those retained for breeding. I've got three greyhounds at home that don't make it into any of those figures reported. The export figures should be correct though as they are published by GA. GAP Vic will adopt around 700 greyhounds this year. I'm sure that every other greyhound rehoming agency across Australia will adopt more than a combined 300. I read on Facebook that Greyhound Rescue adopt more greyhounds than any industry funded group, so if that's true then the annual adoption figures should be well over 1000.

We did that drive too VislaMomma and it was stunning. I was unable to got any accommodation around Wanaka so we ended up down at Twizel. We had hoped to go to Mt Cook the next day and I got up at dawn to photograph the mountain over the lake but sadly the weather was terrible - it was the only day of rain we had. I sat at Peter's Lookout for an hour hoping for some miracle that would allow the sun to poke through but it wasn't to be. Not to worry, it's on my (long) list for next time :)
