  1. Can anyone let me know if $300 for a second hand SB800 in good condition is a fair price? Thanks!
  2. Thanks heaps Huga! For week 22 I just used a portable workmans light, the kind you buy in a hardware store. Photo was taken inside and I only have the little on camera flash at present. It took a while of shifting the light around before I was happy with it.
  3. I think I looked at Rent a Lens and when I added the postage on, they were more expensive for the speedlite - $25 per day from Bens, and $48 from Rent a Lens (minimum 4 days hire so certainly works out cheaper per day, but I only want it for one day) plus $40 postage.
  4. I've been having great difficulty with the focus of my camera when using the remote. When doing the self portraits, I'd have to place an object where I would be and focus on that, then remove the object and take the picture. But at least half would still be out of focus. Very frustrating! I could move around in the frame, closer to the camera or further away, and it would refuse to focus on me but remain "locked". Yet at some, seemingly random times, it would work. Reading the manual didn't help shed any light on the issue. I've finally found out what the issue is and thought I'd share it here for any other Nikon users who may have had the same problem. When the camera is set to remote, you need to make sure that the green focus indicator is off before you take the pic. If it is on, then the focus will remain locked no matter how many times you use the remote. If the green light is off then the remote will focus the camera . I'm looking forward to having less frustrating sessions with my remote in the future
  5. I love the soft feel of that pic Kja - it's just beautiful. One day early: Week 22 - For all the Hows
  6. I do agree with Snook too, but you already know I'm not a fan of HDR
  7. Kirislin, I just wanted to say that I think the photo is just lovely. The boy is beautiful - he looks like a pixie :)
  8. I've booked a speedlite through them for next weekend :) . I like the fact I can go collect the item so there is no additional postage to be paid. I'll let you know what they seem like.
  9. I need to hire a flash and came across http://www.benshire.com.au/. Wondering if anyone has hired from them and if so, was everything ok? ta!
  10. I think my strengths would have to be persistence and ingenuity. I don't have much equipment, so I have to improvise a bit. But like Snook I don't think I have any strengths yet when it comes to photography. Hopefully one day!
  11. Cool, thanks! I think there must be something wrong with my monitor at home. The vignette looks so much darker on my computer here at work
  12. Thanks everyone, the feedback is great Here are a couple more: This one not cropped - I was too close and cut off half his arms (I also discovered when taking these pics that I tend to cut off people's feet ) This one also not cropped but not sure about the editing?
  13. Thanks Snook! I waited till late afternoon before heading up there. The light was lovely :)
  14. Thanks all! Will go do more editing :)
  15. Hi all, I took these yesterday and would welcome feedback - thanks! Original Edit Original Edit
  16. Thanks Huga :) . Before reading your answer I also came across this that pointed me to the SB700: http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/content_page.asp?cid=7-10058-11116 Now I just have to convince OH I need one . If you still have your old one Huga, do you want to sell it?
  17. I've now determined that I need a speedlite... problem is, which one? A question for the Nikon users here - should I go the SB 700 which seems a good entry level flash designed for new users like me, or should I pay the extra and get the SB 910 which is more advanced (and therefore more complicated and difficult for a beginner to use)?
  18. OK, off to google. I currently only have the little pop up flash on the camera
  19. This is very timely as I have to do the same thing in a couple of weeks. I've done very little low light night photography and am feeling a bit nervous about it . Kja, what do you mean by bounce light?
  20. Thanks for starting this thread CC! I'm in no position to provide critique but I did want to say that I like the second edit best. What you said Kja about the shadow was really interesting, made a lot of sense, and wasn't something I'd have thought of - thanks!! :)
  21. Wow KA, it must have taken you ages to do all that!!! Many thanks for your comments in my pics :)
