Yep! Keep it clean as possible, put on some antiseptic and watch for signs of infection...if it gets infected it will need antibiotics, but otherwise it should heal without intervention. If the dog is licking at the wound too much, you can put a little vicks vapourub around (but not on) the wound...they usually leave it alone then!!

I would get a referral to a specialist veterinary dentist and get their opinion on the best course of action. A friend of mine's greyhound just had root canal work done on a tooth!

Holistic/natural/herbal Vet Wanted - Brisbane
New Age Outlaw replied to pomquest's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Most recently, I used this vet and she is a wonderful acupuncturist who also does chinese herbal medicine and other alternate treatments. I recommend you giver her a call. -
I actually drive down there every few weeks to shop. I have a freezer here especially for the dog food, so I can buy a whole bunch at once. It is open on Saturday mornings, which is when I go there.

I saw the duck frames the other week...they are huge and have loads of meat on them. Can't remember how much though. Sorry! I got some of the duck and vegie barf mix - my guys loved it. Apparently the camel is similar to roo...low in fat and high in protein but less sinewy than the roo...cat breeders are using it heaps too. They also have Emu. It's one of my favourite shops!

I find tweezers very useful for removing ticks. I can get the whole tick out better with tweezers than with my fingernails. ;)

Has Anyone Ever, Accidentally Bought
New Age Outlaw replied to benny123's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have been known to eat the occasional tuna paste and tomato sauce sandwich (especially at Subway!)... Don't like sardines though ...only get them for the dogs! -
Has Anyone Ever, Accidentally Bought
New Age Outlaw replied to benny123's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yep, mine had some last nite (store was out of the other kind!). They love them just as much as the oil ones. But then,my guys would eat dirt if you put it in a bowl and told them it was food!! -
Fish Oil Or Flaxseed Oil?
New Age Outlaw replied to Norskgra's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My old gal's accupuncturist, who was also a pet naturopath (and a vet) told me that dogs absorb the omegas from fish oil much better than they do from flaxseed oil. -
Got home from work today to find Cocky, our old Galah, looking very weak and having had a significant bleed from a lump on his leg. He didn't want to eat, or talk or even whistle his favourite tune. Being that Cocky was (as far as we can work out) in his late 30's or early 40's, we knew that the time had come for him to cross the bridge so we took him to the vet. He'd been with us for a long time, since OH's grandmother passed (he was hers originally and we took him in after she died). Since he was a little boy OH had known this fellow...it is so hard looking at his empty cage sitting in the corner, and knowing I'll never hear that demanding "hello Cocky"again. I'm sure his little mate Stan the rosella is waiting for him at the bridge. Ruby red bird will miss him, as will we all...

I had a greyhound bitch who used to throw up if she had chicken wings (every time!) but was OK with necks. Some of them just have strange tummies I think. Try cutting out the chicken totally and see if that helps...then reintroduce slowly. You'll soon find out, but it could be that he is sensitive to chook. A friend's grey can't eat lamb at all - even the tiniest bit gives her the runs. Every other kind of meat she is fine with.

My Puppy Has Tonsilitis
New Age Outlaw replied to SPIKELOVER's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have never had puppies with it, but have had adult dogs with tonscillitis. They responded quite quickly to antibiotics. If your little one isn't responding, maybe a change of antibiotics is needed, or maybe it is something else causing the pain? Another vet trip is warranted, if only to ease your fears. Hope he is feeling better soon! -
Desexing A Cryptorchid Dog
New Age Outlaw replied to percyk's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Interesting thing though...my dog had one up & one down. I had the up one removed when we thought he was going to be a race dog...we left the down one alone. When he proved to be far to slow to race, I had the other one removed; different vet but they took my word for it that the retained testicle was gone and they did issue the desex certificate. Can't imagine why you would want to, but if I had been devious and wanted the desext cert without having the retained testie out I could have. -
I use tank water to wash my dogs. If you don't have a tank are you able to somehow collect some rainwater next time it rains and use that? Otherwise I don't know. Good luck!

Are There Any Good Dog Food Rolls Available?
New Age Outlaw replied to ashan's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yeah, I have used the Scotty's in the past and it is really good, but I think may only be available in Qld? -
Dick Van Pattens Or Eaglepack?
New Age Outlaw replied to snarferama's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
There is no specifically fish flavour in the non holistic range, but I had a quick look through the ingredients in some of the non holistic ones and can't see any Ethoxyquin in them either. :D -
Dick Van Pattens Or Eaglepack?
New Age Outlaw replied to snarferama's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Just of interest, the Eukanuba FP contains a preservative called Ethoxyquin (commonly used to preserve fish based products) about which there are some health concerns (my dog's accupunturist brought this tomy attention so I did a little research). I know it has been discussed on this forum before...a search might be of interest. The EP holisitc range uses an alternate (natural) preservative. Just a thought. -
I think it may also depend on the size of the dog. I feed my greyhounds twice a day for a couple of reasons. One is that they are a breed susceptible to bloat, so two smaller meals rather than one big one is recommended as one of the methods to reduce the risk. Also, most greyhounds are used to two meals...thats usually what they get in the racing kennels. But, in the past when I have had other breeds (small & large) I have fed one meal a day with no problems. I think whatever works for you dogs should be fine.

Does Anyone Use Eagle Pack Senior?
New Age Outlaw replied to Trishm's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I did use the EP senior for a while (when I still had a senior dog) but to be honest, I got sick of having two different foods for the older and younger dog, so when the senior food ran out I just fed her the same EP holisitic I was feeding the other dog...didn't notice much difference...she did well on the normal holisitic, just as she had on the senior. So, in my opinion, I would just feed your senior the same as you are feeding the younger one. -
Vet Just Told Me What I Am Feeding Is All Wrong
New Age Outlaw replied to Veanna's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Time for a new vet!!! Anyone that won't at least listen to you doesn't deserve your custom. I'd be moving on, and I'd be writing the old practice a letter to tell them why! -
Cheapest Online Shop For Sentinel Spectrum?
New Age Outlaw replied to samoyedman's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Except it appears that this "pet products on the web" place has free shipping and you can pay by paypal. Interesting site! -
Happy to hear he is OK. You did the right thing. My boy Ziggy is booked in for his op next Friday...hope it goes as well as Chewy's obviously has. Glad he can stay in the laundry too.

Pedigree won't harm them, but there are probably better things to feed (in my opinion). I use a good quality dry food (I personally use Eagle Pack, but there are other super premium brands that are good as well), raw meaty bones (I have bigger dogs so prefer turkey necks) and good quality mince with vegies mushed in; I don't make my own (too lazy ) - but I have a great place where I buy pet food that does it all. I also give them occasional fish (sardines, mackrel, salmon). However, different dogs do well on different food, so it may be a bit of trial and error to find out what works best for yours.

My Greyhound Trainer Has Quite ?
New Age Outlaw replied to frank's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
It's disappointing when the trainer doesn't come up to expectations Frank. I had all sorts of problems finding a trainer up here in Brissy who had a vacancy (well, one I knew and trusted anyway) so I ended up sending two pups to a friend in Victoria. Disappointing because part of the point of having them was for me to watch them race (in person rather than on Sky Channel!). As it turned out, one of them proved to be slow, so he has come home to be a pet, and the other one is trialling in preparation to commence racing, hopefully in a few weeks time. Can't point you in the right direction for a trainer in NSW...sorry. Good luck. -
My Greyhound Trainer Has Quite ?
New Age Outlaw replied to frank's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Yep, that's pretty much it. It's all about getting the dog used to the boxes, the lure, running around the circle, running with and against other dogs etc.
