More Dietary Questions
New Age Outlaw replied to New Age Outlaw's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Well, we have to finish the bag of dry that we have before I can start. The only thing that concerns me is, being greyhounds, that they may lose weight , but I will keep a careful eye on that. -

Thanx for that link - it's a handy one! I find with my dogs (they are greyhounds) they sometimes need a bit extra due to their fast metabolism. I have found chicken necks no good (too small), and they tend to choke on chook wings, but the turkey necks are big and thick enough to make them work hard without causing any problems! I know the place I get my meat from also had frames , so I might look into those as well. I prefer things they they can finish in one sitting, rather than things where there will be bits left that they will fight about later! :D Cheers! -
Fascinating topic. I also had some "stiff" pups in the one (and so far only) litter I bred. There were two pups that were a bit smaller than the others and they had what look to be seizures. They would stretch out and go completely rigid, legs tail and neck all extended. They would then go back to normal. Those two pups didn't last very long before they died. We theorised that it might have been due to being a bit premmie. The bitch was mated twice, two days apart, and they date she whelped would have made her 4 days early for the first mating. We figured that the two affected pups might have been from the second mating, and so just too immature to survive. No idea if that is what caused it or not, but I have always wondered. The three survivors grew up into lovely dogs (they are over 2 years old now)!

OK, I need to pick the brains of the raw feeders here. I was toying with the idea of switching from Eagle Pack Hollistic to Orijen, but then I was also thinking about the possibility of cutting the kibble out altogether. What I was unsure of was how much meat I need to use to substitute for the current kibble component without the dogs losing any weight. Currently they are fed the following: Ziggy (morning) - 1 cup kibble, 250 g mince, small splash of pet milk (evening) - 1 cup kibble, 250g meat (turkey neck plus mince to make up the weight to 250g), dollop of greek yoghurt Cleo (morning) - 3/4 cup kibble, 200g mince, small splash of pet milk (evening) - 3/4 cup kibble, 200g meat (turkey neck plus mince to make up the weight to 200g), dollop of greek yoghurt I also split a tin of sardines between them a couple of times per week. The mince that I use is a barf style mix that has raw fruit, veg etc minced in it. They are both currently a good weight, and look fit and healthy, so I am just curious how much I would need to feed if it was just the meat (mince, necks etc) component with no kibble. Any ideas are welcomed!!

Good luck to you and Ollie dog!! We will be thinking of you both on Tuesday!!

I'm guessing the vet would want to remove the lump so he could send it to pathology for analysis to find out exactly what it is. Lot's of different lumps look alike, and the only way to tell what they are is in the laboratory.

Rip Tonka - Always My Favourite Greyhound Baby
New Age Outlaw replied to Trisven13's topic in Rainbow Bridge
So sorry to hear of Tonka's passing. So young, and so pretty...he looked like quite a character (love the "teeth" shot! ). I know my greys Silver & Ernie & Elvira, along with many many others, are waiting at the bridge to look after him. -
Fingers and paws are crossed here that Ollie makes a speedy recovery and is back to his old self very soon.

My Dog Just Had A Fit Or Seizure
New Age Outlaw replied to SueM's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Poor little Harvey! Very glad he is OK now and hope he continues to recover. So lucky he was with you Carly!!! Big hugs and kisses to him from me and the greyhound gang! -
Never used to be a problem here at my place (inner western suburbs) but then I came home one day and all the dogs were covered in scrub ticks. I had never seen one here, and then bang! literally hundreds of them ...I have never seen anything like it in my life. It took my OH and I over an hour to get them all off. As far as we can figure and after chatting with some helpful CSIRO folks, they probably came from the bats. So, now it's advantix monthly and occasional permoxin sprayings. I still find one occasionally, but not very often.

Yep, I second that! I buy all by dog food from there - they are awesome!!

Research after reading info topics here on DOL. The info I found here gave me a direction to do further research in.

RIP Choppa! So sorry you are gone from this earth so soon!!

Hard as it is to believe, it is two years today since my beloved Ernie, my first greyhound and special heart dog went to the bridge. I bought him for $600 to race, and then keep as a pet, never realising he would be so good on the track...winner of 19 races with 40 places in a 120 race career...he made me very proud. Then, when he retired and came home to live, he adapted perfectly to life as a beloved pet...he was my special boy. I didn't get to spend nearly long enough with my boy - he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, and went to the bridge two years ago today...just a few weeks shy of his 8th birthday. I miss him every day, but see glimpses of him in his son Ziggy...they don't look anything alike but some of the mannerisms Ziggy displays remind so much of his dad. There is a little place in my heart, empty forever, shaped just like Ernie.

How Many Vets Are Doing This?
New Age Outlaw replied to pomquest's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Which vet? You can PM me if you don't want to "out" them... -
I have heard of dogs being allergic to chicken. I had a greyhound who threw up if I gave her chicken wings, but was OK with necks...I figured it might have been the skin (it's more fatty than the meat).

Diabetes Insipidus (not The Sugar Kind)
New Age Outlaw replied to blacklabrador's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Also known as Water Diabetes...not uncommon in greyhounds who have over exerted, particularly in really hot weather...there should be loads of info on google, but I would be getting some tests done to rule out any other possible causes. Good luck. -
I feed the duck barf regularly and have never had any problems with it. My dogs love it, but then they love all food!!

Had a beagle that used to do that! At least her breath was always nice!!!

Eaglepack Holistic Select Large Puppy
New Age Outlaw replied to Hunter_Weim's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If anyone is using the Eagle Pack Power formula,I noticed at my local they had packs that had 20% extra for free. I don't use that one myself, but if anyone on here does they should keep an eye out for the bonus packs. (Apologies for the hijack ). -
It might depend on the dog, but I have always fed my greyhounds raw & dry together and never had any issues with either upset bellies or constipation.

We use the home brand mackeral or sardines too. Although, they had red salmon on Xmas day because I somehow acquired a can and we don't eat it!!

Leaving Meat Out To "cool" To Room Temp
New Age Outlaw replied to WinGus's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I just nuke the meat for 20 seconds - it's just enough to take the chill off but not too much that cooks it.
