Desexing, Do Vets Ever Give Pain Killers After?
SarasMum replied to SarasMum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The only thing on the bill is desexing fee. It doesnt list anything else including the abs she was given so I just dont know. I rang them again because she was still vomiting but the vet seems to think that its just the anaesthetic wearing off and to keep her nil by mouth until tomorrow and see how she goes. I forgot to ask about pain killers when I spoke to them. Is there anything I can give her that I might have here? Stoopid stoopid me :D edited for spelling -
My GSD was desexed today and she really looks like she is in pain. I know she is a bit dopey still and feeling sorry for herself but that look on her face is doing me in. Do vets ever prescribe pain killers afterwards because she hasnt been given anything. She has had an antibiotic shot but thats all. She vomited after we got her home because she had had a drink. Oops and she has just vomited again. I did call the vet and she said just to give her a very small amount of fluids in a few hours and if she does it again then not until tomorrow. Does this sound right?

Changing My Dog's Diet - Need To Work Out Something Healthy
SarasMum replied to Liza's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Do you have a Lenards chicken shop close by? My OH goes there around 5pm and orders some chicken for us, at the same time he always asks if they have any carcasses. He normally gets around 2 crates full for nix! Now you couldnt carry that on public transport but I am sure you could get a bag full. I feed my two large dogs Advance which I can get for $80 for 20kg on special. This lasts nearly 2 months. I add cheap Coles homebrand sardines in oil which they love, cheese, yoghurt, an egg here and there. Any leftover vegies from dinner also go on in their bowl. For a little dog it doesnt have to be expensive to feed. I can get 4 lamb brisket bones for around $3. This would be 4 entire meals for your small dog. I think the initial outlay of dry food will be the biggest cost but once thats done it will be fairly cheap to feed. Those rolls are gross and are quite expensive, same with canned food. I think that if you have a look around you will be surprised what you can find. -
My GSD is doing this atm too, I think its this weather we have been having lately. She is coming out in clumps. I have been filling plastic bags with it. Shame I dont know how to knit lol.

What To Use To Soothe Sore Fly Bitten Ears?
SarasMum replied to SarasMum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Its Dettol ointment not the runny stuff. I didnt think it would sting. She didnt seem to pull away when I applied it. I will keep going with the salt water and hopefully that will soothe them. Thanks. -
What To Use To Soothe Sore Fly Bitten Ears?
SarasMum posted a topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My GSD has been attacked quite badly in the past week by flies. I thought they had died down a bit and didnt put fly spray on her for a few days and now the poor thing has been really bitten. When I discovered she had been bitten I put fly spray on her head and near her ears but I didnt want to hurt her on the already sore bits so I missed them. I put some paw paw ointment to heal them but all that did was seem to attract more flies and dirt. Today they are icky. I have bathed them with some salt water and applied some Dettol antiseptic cream and she is inside. Is there anything else I should do? How often should I bathe them? She still has some of that black crusty type stuff (not sure if its fly crap or dirt from the paw paw ointment) on there but I dont want to clean too hard in case it hurts her. I would love to put some pawpaw ointment on while she is inside but I have NEW CARPET . I really dont want it all stuck to the carpet if I can help it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Oh and my staffy hasn't one single bite. -
I have discovered that my girl has a break out the day after we have had the sprinkler on (we are allowed twice a week here  ) It takes her about 3 or 4 days to get over it too. If your dog has sore patches from scratching I would try and apply some Pawpaw ointment to help the healing process. It works for my girl. Oh we also have kikuyu here.

So sorry for your loss. Run free beautiful boy.

Does This Sound Strange To You?
SarasMum replied to SarasMum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The vet as asked them to come back next week if he hasnt picked up at all and they will do some bloodwork to rule other stuff out. Thanks for your replies. The suggestion of rice just surprised me a lot. -
Does This Sound Strange To You?
SarasMum replied to SarasMum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Its around 20deg overnight here so I dont think its the cold thats doing it. The rice was suggested as a long term thing which is why I was questioning it. Her husband has bought a bag of Advance and will give this every second day in conjunction with his other stuff. I think the vet said that there was a fair bit of bone in his poo, too much chicken and not enough of the red stuff. It just seems funny that its happened all of a sudden and happened on one day but not the next, then the day after again. They do panic about him and he is a very very much loved member of the family so they listen to their vet and follow by the letter. I dont think offal was a part of the diet he ate. The vet also told her to soak all of his dry food before giving it to him to release any gasses that may be in it to minimise the risk of bloat. I have a deep chested dog too but I thought soaking was a no no. I am very conscious of how my dog drinks before and after feeding dry eg, if she has been running around under the sprinkler (her fave past time) then I wont feed her dry food. Its all so confusing. -
I have a friend who has an 8yo Wei. Her female wei passed away about a year ago from bloat. At the time she was feeding dry food soaked in water which is what the breeder had told her to feed the dog years before. They had also been given scraps etc. After the female died she stopped feeding dry altogether and was feeding a combo of chicken carcasses and meaty bones, scraps, vegies, yoghurt etc. The dog goes for a daily walk at 5.30am and on Monday didnt want to go, she almost pulled him along the entire time. The next day he was fine, however the day after again he was dragging himself along. His stools have been fine, his gut is soft and no sign of any problems other than lethargy. He was taken to the vet who advised that he needed more carbs in his died and suggested feeding him rice/dry food. That was her solution regarding his lethargy. He has been on the same diet for a year now and this has only happened in the past few days. Now I am not an expert on dogs by any means but that just sounded a bit strange to me. Yes he maybe lacking in some nutrients but giving him rice I dont think is going to fix that is it? Maybe some quality dry food with its added vitamins and minerals but not plain old rice? I am waiting to hear what the recommended dry food is. I told her that if its Hills not to buy it. We cant get EP here but we can get Advance, Nutrience and some others. I feed Advance as its readily available and more affordable thru stock feeds. The others are only available at Petbarn which charge a lot more. What are your thoughts on the recommendation of rice?

Anti Histamine For Contact Allergies
SarasMum replied to SarasMum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
No its definately seasonal. She doesnt itch at all for about 9 to 10 months but as soon as it heats up she starts. Its only under her legs, belly and chest, where she lays on the grass. We have kikuyu here which I cant replace as we live on half an acre and I cant afford to returf the lot. She is fine today, as she was yesterday but the day before she was quite red with blotches all over her chest and legs. Her hair is almost non existant on her underside now. There is nothing different in the yard now that wasnt there all year. -

Hi Trish She is good today, it seems to come and go, its not very constant. She was good with the first lot of Claratyne but proceeded to up chuck the second lot. I will have to buy some tablets I think but it did work the first time around. I have been putting Pawpaw ointment on her, which she loves lol, and it clears it up really quickly. I would just like to stop the itching if I can. I have given her a huge hug from you which isnt hard when she is practically on your lap most of the time lol. -

I have given her 5ml of Claratyne liquid (kids stuff) and I will see how she goes. Weird dog actually enjoyed the syringe with the meds in it -
Pulling Out Tufts Of Fur By Hand

I have just spent the past half hour pulling hair from my GSDs back legs. Even though she gets brushed regularly it has started clumping the last couple of days. At least its easy to pick up! -
Anti Histamine For Contact Allergies

I saw the vet when it first happened, which was not long after we brought her home 2 summers ago. She was given a cortisone injection. I really want to try and work this out myself if at all possible as my previous dog had to be pts at 8yo due to the medications she was given for her allergies. I saw that poor dog suffer worse with the meds than without but not knowing any better at the time I thought it was our only solution. I dont want this dog resigned to the same fate. I would rather see what I can do for her myself that isnt going to cause her long term side effects. She is absolutely fine for 10 months of the year but gets red and welty and itchy for a couple of months. I have been keeping her inside a fair bit, trying to keep her totally off the grass when I can. We have been keeping her away from the grass after watering because I thought this might be a trigger too with the mould spores sticking to the ground. I apply pawpaw ointment to her as well. It is only on her underside so definately a contact allergy. Also I dont have antihistamine tablets, only liquid. I will try her on some Claratyne, it says 5ml per 30kg child so I hope that dosage is ok for her. -
The only antihistamine I have on hand is Phenergan. Can I use that to stop my staffy x scratching? She is really red today and a bit lumpy too. I have been trying to keep her inside but obviously there are times she has to go out. What dosage would I give her? I only have the oral one too that I used on my kids. She is about 30kg. Edited to add that I found some Claratyne for kids syrup too. Its the 1-12 years one. The active ingredient is Loratadine 5mg/5ml. Its non drowsy too so I would prefer if I could use that instead of the Phenergan.

What a great site. My staffy x has summer allergies and she has been great this summer except for the past few days. After looking at that I realised that we have been putting the sprinkler on the lawn and she has been laying on it while its still damp. We will try and keep her away and see how she goes. I always knew it was some type of grass allergy but the pieces are now all fitting together.

My staffy x has a summer grass itch. I have found though since I changed her diet a bit, cut out most lamb/beef and feed Advance instead of Supercoat she has hardly itched this year. She has had some bug bites but the two previous summers she has been red raw under her belly and feet but this year is really good........ touch wood.

Killer Chemical Found In Pet Meat
SarasMum replied to ~Anne~'s topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My son is intolerant of sulphur dioxide which is found in dried fruits, wines (not that he drinks that lol) and anything else that is *fruit flavoured*. He was diagnosed with migraines at 2 years old and we worked out that it was the dried mango he used to love to eat. He hasnt had a migraine since we stopped letting him eat it. I remember there being a previous discussion on this subject a while ago. I only feed my dogs food that I would put in my mouth - aside from the carcasss -
What is an approximate cost of a titre test? Just interested as to how it stacks up against the cost of vaccinating.

That was a really interesting link. Thank you for that.

My previous shepherd girl died from internal bleeding 6 years ago. It wasnt until reading this forum a while back that I realised it was only a few days after receiving her heartworm needle. I had never put the two together before that. I will never give my dogs that again.
