  1. I'm so sorry Sags Nothing can replace the space they leave in our hearts Take comfort in the fact that she is free from pain and watching over you and your family. I know she will be a guidance for the pup I lost also. Rest in peace dear Penny, you were well-loved and will be sorely missed
  2. How about training her to walk nicely on a loose lead? Maybe also getting her to "WAIT" while you put her food bowl down, and not allowing her to eat until you say "OK" or whatever your chosen release word is. Just a couple of ideas. Other than that, personally I only teach pups the basics at this tender age, so as not to overload their minds JMO
  3. Woah way to go Heather and Asia That is an excellent achievement, congratulations! She's such a clever girl, lovely photos too
  4. A 13 week old puppy is still VERY much a baby. Does she have free roam of the house at night? I would personally stop this. Have you tried crating her at night? It can be a great help with toilet training. Don't give up, she'll get there  I'm sure you'll get some more advice here anyway.
  5. Jet if you're intending to feed a BARF diet I suggest you buy or borrow the Dr Billinghurst books, or one of them at least. It explains everything in laymans terms, and then you can make up your own mind about what you want to feed, taking into account what you are able to source easily. Same goes for a raw diet, do some research I've received advice from the BARF books, raw websites, as well as people on here, and I take bits and pieces of everyone's advice, the bits that make sense to me the most, and feed my own sort of mix. ETA: But...examples of other things they can be fed are RMB's, offal (not too often), mince, fresh meat, whole eggs, fish, yoghurt, some add veggies, etc.
  6. Ohh gosh Fifi I am so sorry The giants never stay with us long enough do they, and unfortunately like you I know what it's like to lose one way too young How devastating for you all, please take heart in the fact she is now running free with some great doggie pals and watching over you and the other hounds. One day you will meet again. Rest in peace sweet girl  You will be sadly missed.
  7. Wow looks interesting, thanks for sharing.
  8. Woah how beautiful is Mortimer!!! Love baby GSP's
  9. Agree with that, IMO it is a VERY rare "Mastiff x" that actually has any true Mastiff in it Mastiffs are huuuuuuuuuge and can weigh up to 100kg. Not having a go at you at all Jimmay :p I'd aim for around the 25kg mark as well And he is gorgeous by the way! :p
  10. Chief is a great name NN :D Can't wait for the photos of the two of them together.
  11. Hey BDL :D This doesn't really answer your question I'm afriad :D but I've seen that same kennel that you posted a pic of for sale at Pet Stock, the reason it caught my eye was because there was a Saint Bernard pictured on the tag ;) I was looking at the x-large size kennel, and the pic on the tag was of an adult Saint laying down inside it, plus another Saint sitting next to it. Now there is NO WAY IN HELL that the picture on the tag was showing the same kennel I was looking at, as it would have only fit a Lab/Golden Retriever sized dog, an adult Saint would not have been able to fit it's body through the door let along turn around and lay down in there. Like I said, I know that doesn't really answer your question!!! (Sorry) If you're going to buy one off eBay I would personally try to find a similar sized one in the flesh - ie. in a pet shop or something - so you can see it and picture your adult dog in it. That's just me though, measurements don't mean a lot to me until I see it in real life, if you know what I mean? Good luck!
  12. I assume the offal I feed is human grade? It isn't marked as pet food only, does this mean it's human grade? Not that I'd eat the stuff if you paid me!
  13. Thanks so much Trish!!! Brisket bones are one thing I can never find, or only in very small amounts. Cheers for that Not sure if this is more a BARF question than a RAW diet, but when people give yoghurt to their dogs, what sort are you giving? What should I be looking for on the label?
  14. Hi Leema, I get all my organs (LOL not MY organs, but ones for the dogs! ) from the supermarkets, either Coles/Woolies/Foodland. I happen to work right near two supermarkets, so I go in every day to see if they have specials on, and more often than not the organs are marked down for quick sale I guess not that many people use them around this area maybe? There is always a huge supply. I'm in the Tea Tree Gully area. Definitely still looking for a butcher relatively close for a good supply of bones though...
  15. Thankyou Garloch, yes it does help :D I didn't realise Dremel was the brand! Thought it was the name of the tool, like "hammer" or "saw" I'm such a girl
  16. Wow, that's good! Very impressive! (And yes so simple) Thanks for posting. I have never ever used a clicker but perhaps should try it for nail trimming. He's pretty thick though sometimes! I wonder if he would "get it"? (You can tell I know nothing about clicker training...) With a human nail file? Does it take ages? Work well? We sort of did a combination of these this afternoon with some success, took him for a walk so he was not so wound up, then OH fed him and distracted him with a pigs ear while I got to work on the nails. He still gave us a hard time of it, but at least they're done, for now! For the future I'm definitely considering a Dremel. (Thanks Trish for posting the link.) This is possibly a very dumb question! But is a "Dremel" a tool solely for doggy manicures, or is it used for something else in the power tool world? :D And are there different sizes or anything? My boys are big, would you use the same tool on them as you would on say a Chihuahua?
  17. Ooooh yes please let me know also Have just started feeding BARF/prey model (I am only beginning, as in have only started this week, so am still working out exactly what I and the dogs prefer) so still getting the hang of it all, and am very keenly cheeking out all the butchers and supermarkets near me. Can I ask who/where Ness?
  18. How old was she when you got her? 6 weeks and 2 days? If so, or even if she was 7 weeks at the time of purchase, she was far too young to leave Mum. Pups should be with their dam and littermates until AT LEAST 8 weeks, sometimes longer. The best way to toilet train is to watch her like a hawk! When she shows signs of needing to go (ie. circling, sniffing the ground) then take her immediately outside to the place you want her to do her business. Take her to the same spot every single time and she will get the hang of it. Once she goes there, lots of praise and even a little treat. If she has an accident in the house, it is not her fault it is yours for not watching her closely enough, so don't ever scold her or yell or smack or anything, as she won't understand what she's being reprimanded for. At such a young age, she will need to go very often. Take her outside after eating, after drinking, after playing, when she wakes up, and very very very often in between these times. When I have a baby puppy in the house I ususally take it out every hour to two hours.
  19. Arrrggghhh Hudson WILL NOT let me cut his nails! I've trimmed them many times before, the second time I ever did them I cut slightly into the quick, he didn't seem fased at all and although it bled like a stuck pig, I managed to stop the flow quite quickly and returned to trimming the rest of them, and he was fine. Since then, I've trimmed them a few times and not had a problem. Now all of a sudden he's decided it's the scariest thing in the world and even with both my OH and I holding him down, he won't let us near them, he just won't hold still and struggles free everytime. (I've tried a quiet gentle approach as well, ie. without him being held down, still to no avail.) I need some help!!! :p They NEED trimming as I can hear them when he walks on the floorboards so I know they're getting too long. I highly doubt a vet or groomer or anyone else would have any luck either. Do you think a dremel would work? If so where do I buy one and roughly what do they cost? He's only 6.5 months old but WOW is he strong!
  20. LOL if they it was either of my dogs, they'd have eaten them both! (I like the smell of RC too!)
  21. I feed frozen chicken frames too and have not had a problem. I used to feed them thawed but my Berner would gobble them so quickly, they were gone before you knew it! Then he would bring them back up again - every time  Now he gets them frozen and it takes him a good 5 or more minutes to eat it all, and he actually has to chew and break bits off, not just crunch the whole thing down in two mouthfuls I've not had a problem with frozen bones, and they don't seem to enjoy them any less EFS
  22. I feed my Saint pup on Royal Canin Giant (although we are currently making the switch to BARF - but that's another story!) and the kibble size for that is quite large. I haven't used the Royal Canin Maxi (for large breeds, as opposed to giants) variety, but it may be similar in size? Worth a try maybe? Actually if you're able to get your hands on a Royal Canin Maxi brochure, it may have the kibble size in there, as the Giant brochure does. Has a picture of a piece of kibble with "actual size" written next to it, then you can see before you buy  Good luck.
