  1. Well that's fitting, his nickname is Hudson Hawke Thanks for your story. Way too many people have experienced bloat with their dogs, hate it
  2. Yep we do all of this. Dogs are fed once in the morning, once at night. Never exercised before or after. Fed raw (although we do have kibble on hand for when we run out, and he was actually fed kibble this morning. However that is not to say that's what did it, plenty of people feed kibble with no issues.) Nurse said they put a tube down into his tummy, yes. I don't know exactly what this does? The main one is their stomach swelling up very noticeably, and it's very firm. They may also pant excessively and just seem uneasy, not wanting to finish their meal, etc.
  3. I'm not too sure on this? If he had of got torsion, where the stomach twists, (when it is REALLY dangerous) then it requires surgery and the vet staples something or other to prevent it happening again, or prevent it twisting again anyway. But since he didn't twist he didn't require surgery. I am unsure if he is at a higher risk of bloating again now that he's done it once. Any info welcomed. You can't There is so much conflicting information out there too about how to prevent bloat, and we do what we think is right, and yet we're still facing it.
  4. Thanks, yes I have to sit down with my ex and work out exactly what went on, if anything was different at all. See this is the thing. Anyone with a bloat-prone breed, please make sure that everyone in the household, or anyone else who may feed your dog (say a friend looks after it one day) please PLEASE make them aware of the signs and how urgent it is.
  5. Yes - that's a very good thing. That, and that he successfully vomited. Hope to hear that Hudson is well, home and back to normal very soon. Best wishes Erny ETA: And yes - your OH did good . Thanks for that, I was hoping that was the case. And he's my ex now but yes thankyou he did do very well, I'm lucky he saw it happening and knew what needed to be done. Thanks everyone, it's such a horrible feeling
  6. OMFG :D Any Saint owner's worst fear. My baby boy is at the vet, he bloated today I was out with friends all day and didn't hear my phone ringing, but when I finally checked it I had 12 missed calls from my ex (the dogs still live with him since we split up) and an urgent message saying "Call me ASAP I think Hudson has bloat." Can't even describe how I felt when I read that, I just went cold all over. LUCKILY he had enough sense to not wait around for me to call him back, and he rushed him to the vet. He isn't as dog savvy as me but from the beginning I made sure he knew all about signs of bloat and if he ever saw it happening he had to drop everything and get him straight to the vet. So anyway, Hudson's still there now, they're keeping him overnight. I rang and spoke with the vet nurse, they did an xray on his stomach and it didn't actually twist, so thank God for that. He had a big vomit while at the vet and apparently that is a good sign. So now they just need to keep him in and make sure he can eat properly again tomorrow etc. Because it didn't twist, that's good then right? Shit I am so sick with worry right now
  7. Welcome back Jed, we've missed your words of wisdom
  8. Cassie likes this! Great photos everyone, looks like such a fun day, so annoyed I missed out, can't wait til the next one!
  9. For the record, those Dentastix are rubbish. Bones are far far better And for my boys the thing I've found absolutely best for cleaning their teeth is a massive chunk of meat with no bone, like a roast (raw though), as sinking their teeth into the meat and tearing bits off really seems to do the job! They'd get one of them each a fortnight.
  10. Is this movie animated or with real-life dogs?
  11. Love them they are so beautiful :D Is the white blaze a desired marking, or much of a muchness? :D
  12. Why? Because they refuse to support people who are destroying the breeds that they are working so hard to preserve and improve? No because I'm not perfect and may make mistakes but according to this site that is a big no no, and if I did and asked for help I'd be crucified. That's not true at all. There is so much valuable advice and an imense amount of support on these forums for registered breeders.
  13. Health testing WASN'T done... a vet did xrays... that isn't hip or elbow scoring. Agree with this. Just doing xrays doesn't achieve a thing. Shame you are not a registered breeder if both parents are papered, as the litter won't be able to be registered and these pups' lines are therefore useless to the future.
  14. Congrats on producing exactly what you wanted  Here's hoping they turn out as you'd like them to
  15. Hi Frenchiegirl, come into the Saint thread and say hello if you want to chat about the breed or have anymore questions Plenty of konwledgeable people in there who are always willing to help. As a price guide, $1500 to $2000 is about average for a pet. For a show prospect, the sky could be the limit, it would depend on the breeder and the lines. ETA: Also just would like to add....the initial purchase price for a Saint Bernard is cheap compared to the ongoing costs involved in correctly raising a puppy and providing all the dog needs for the rest of it's life. EVERYTHING and I mean everything is dearer for a giant breed: worming, desexing, flea treatments, beds, bowls, leads, food, etc!
  16. Sorry what is this DOG BED you speak of? Both mine sleep with me on my bed, thought that was the norm? :p
