Don't get a Bernese if you don't like dog hair everywhere. Not as bad as some other breeds but they definitely shed. And no there is no such thing as a short haired Bernese. Just for the record, even if there was, I've had both a long haired and a short haired Saint in the past, and the short haired actually shed more.

Hi, I just replied in your other thread too. I find the soft crates look much nicer and more inviting than the metal crates, they are also far lighter and easier to set up and take down. However for a puppy who is going to want to chew everything, a metal crate is a good idea to start. You could always cover it in a blanket, dogs like this anyway as it is more den-like for them. At the end of the day, it's your pup and you're doing what is best for it, so try not to worry too much about what others may say. Once they see that your dog loves it's crate (and he will!) they will shutup pretty quickly

Hi Jordan I have two Bernese and they are awesome dogs so congratulations on your choice of breed, you will not be disappointed. My pup is 7 months old now, and he slept in a crate for the first two months when we brought him home. He never ever soiled his crate once, and it was such a handy tool to have. I originally crate trained him because I show him, and wanted him to behave and be settled at shows, but now even if I got another puppy who I didn't intend to show, I'd still use a crate. They are such a good investment! I bought the largest size available, but really it is too big. Mine is 48 inches long, but you would easily get away with a 42 inch. They don't take up THAT much room really, I mean you have to put his bed somewhere anyway!

How lucky are you, photos are mandatory when you get your pup I hope you know ;) Bernese do love companionship, but your pup will be ok. I expect this to only last a year or so before you get your second anyway, they are addictive!!!

You could try taking her for a big walk/run/play before you leave to tire her out some more.

Good luck to everyone showing today Go the Saints

An adult Bernese maybe. Some females are not all that large. I wouldn't recommend a puppy though as they are a very slow to mature breed, and can remain quite bouncy and silly up to the age of three or four (even more for some!)

Cass, I'll have a squizz at the catalogue tonight, but might not be able to let you know as the Sunday Specials were a bit stuffed up and there are some pages missing I've had a look at it.... There are a total of 91 dogs before Baby Puppy Dog - so about 2 hours. BUT and it is a big but - two of the classes are Brace Class and Parent and Offspring. I am not sure whether they are faster or slower than normal judging (43 teams of dogs). Also - according to the catalogue - there are only 5 state bred dogs entered - which I know isn't correct. This is where the catalogue ends (without the rest of this class and without the State bred bitches and neuter classes). I would imagine at least 30 state bred dogs entered - not the 5 that are in the catalogue (I know of 4 that are entered but not in there) - but who knows. Could be an hour longer or not.... Hard to tell. You're the 4th class on - I would think maybe before lunch? Thankyou for that

Sorry to hijack the topic but didn't want to start a whole new thread. Is it at all possible for any clever person to work out APPROXIMATELY when the baby puppy dogs will be judged on Sunday? I'll be there all day, but OH has to work. He'd like to come down to see Moose and I in the ring if possible, but I have no idea if we'll be in the morning or afternoon or what. Thanks in advance, I know it's a long shot!

Hi cassie! Thank you (and everyone else so far)so much for your suggestions and advice. You're right about giving them a call instead - I'll definitely do that during the week. I did notice a lot of other breeders that are interstate - I just wasn't sure what the process was of buying interstate and transportation, etc. Will look into that too Thanks so much! No problem My breeder is conveniently only 15 mins from me, but I have bought a pup (a Saint not a Bernese) from NSW before. Cost me about $180 from memory on top of his purchase price and he was flown down to me, all I had to do was collect him from the airport, it was really very simple. Make sure you post pics when you get your pup!

Some breeders do a dual sire mating intentionally It's definitely possible.

Hi Fiasco, welcome to the forums GREAT choice of breed! I have two and they are just the most loveable dogs. Zeigen have some really nice dogs. Perhaps try calling them instead of sending an email. Some breeders prefer to actually talk to a prospective buyer rather than just sending emails. If Zeigen don't have any puppy plans, you could look interstate. There are plenty of reputable Bernese breeders in other states too Plenty of people buy pups interstate all the time. One more thing, be prepared to go on a waiting list. Some breeders will have a long list of people waiting for a pup. The fact that you only want a pet and not a show prospect could mean a shorter wait though. Good luck in your search!

She is great, and I wish it fitted in with my work. We so need the practice. Jane is doing extra weekend classes in the lead up to the Royal, if that helps? This weekend it is Sunday (tomorrow) at 1pm.
