  6. I may pop in for a look with the furry kids :)
  7. Sorry but they couldn't be further in nature from a Saint if they tried! I really do worry about people who take on such dogs (any dog actually) and know very little about them. I agree that the breeder - who I also know of - should have rethought this one They are however, truly wonderful dogs in the right hands.
  8. Hi guys, just want to ask something I've been thinking about. I have two Bernese, they are inside dogs and shed heavily. Next dog will be a Saint. I'm not pregnant or anything but we will probably start trying for kids in a few years time. What would you do if you had a baby that was allergic to dogs? Be it the hair or the dander or whatever? I don't know too much about it as no one close to me has the issue. I could never imagine giving up my dogs, and would hate to banish them to the outdoors for the rest of their lives. Plus I imagine my kids growing up with dogs as part of the family. Has anyone been in this position before? Since both OH and I are fine and have no allergies to them, does that mean our children also wouldn't? Or doesn't it work that way? Not wanting to offend anyone with this statement, but I have no interest in owning any of the non shedding breeds. Plus even if I did it wouldn't solve the problem of my current dogs. Interested to hear of anyone's thoughts or experiences! Thanks :)
  9. Agree with keeping pup confined for a while longer. Supervised play only at this age, especially with a much larger stronger dog. I too would be waiting til 12-18 months to desex her if you're able to.
  10. Sorry Naomi for only just seeing this and your PM! But yes I think a Bernese would suit your situation fine :) Our two get along with my brother-in-law's Border Collie very well. As others have said just be mindful of too much rough play for the first year of the Berner's life, but I've always found mine to stop on their own when they've had enough. They are a very slow to mature breed and remain young and bouncy for several years.
  11. I'd suggest a Rott first and foremost, sounds like one would fit the bill quite well, but since your wife says no perhaps a Bullmastiff or Mastiff.
  12. I have a Moose which some people find pretty funny. My friend has a Shar Pei named Tinkerbell.
  13. Excuse my ignorance, but what were Dallies originally bred for? Thanks :)
  14. No way do I let life expectancy come into play when choosing my breeds. I love the breeds I do for a million reasons, I am not going to let one thing turn me off. Any dog you ever own and love, when they pass it will be too soon. No one says "Oh thank goodness, I was getting sick of that old biddy" ;) We all want them here for as long as possible. I just accept that my chosen breeds aren't going to be with me for 15 years. In actual fact it means I can share my life with more of these special individuals over time. Wouldn't ever select a breed simply because it's going to live for a long time.
  15. Phwoarrr there are a couple of VERY nice looking specimens amongst that bunch Off to look at the website now, thanks so much for sharing! That's just Saints, they are heavy breathers.
  16. Actually I can understand rehoming the Lab over the Neo for the reasons the OP has stated. It will be easier to find the Lab a new home provided he is not dog aggressive now. It would be VERY irresponsible for the OP to try to rehome the Neo in my opinion, unless the breeder was willing to take him back. So if the OP doesn't keep him then what, he gets PTS? If both dogs can be worked on and reconditioned then isn't it nicer to keep both alive at least? My two cents.
  17. Ahh I see you are in SA. May I recommend you contact Mark Singer: www.caninetraining.com.au If anyone in our state can help you, he can.
  18. I completely agree with getting a professional behaviourist to assess both dogs, preferably in your home environment as this is where the problem lies. An email reply alone is not enough, and some "professionals" are a lot better than others!!! Where abouts are you located? Someone here may be able to recommend a behaviourist for you. Perhaps it may have helped to introduce them for the first time on neutral ground (a park for example) although this can't be undone now. I hope you are able to sort this out. I do feel for the Lab I'm glad you seem to understand that the Neo is a type of breed that needs a very dedicated and firm owner. Unfortunately, if my dog had seriously bitten me I'd be rethinking if we were suitably matched. Good luck!
  19. Agree with the others, unfortunately this little (big :) ) guy should still be with Mum. But for the record, I would expect him to gain around 1-2kg a week at this early age. It is very important though NOT to overfeed a growing large breed pup. Personally I'd take him off the Advance and Science Diet and get him onto Royal Canin or Eagle Pack, which both do a large/giant variety for puppies.
  20. If you are attracted to them by looks only, I'd say don't get one. They are not the big teddy bears they appear to be. VERY protective of their owners. Lovely dogs but not "easy" to own. If you have your heart set on a Giant Fluffy there are plenty of others with much softer temperaments :)
  21. He's lovely Jordan :) Looking forward to more pics!
  22. Correctly bred Rottweilers are beautiful dogs with the most loving natures! They adore their families too.
