  1. Quick question for those of you in here: When you first got/get your pup, did you or are you planning to take it straight to the vet in the first day or so for a check up? I've often heard this advice given to new owners, to have a vet check right away so if anything is "wrong" I guess you can advise the breeder immediately, but to be honest I've never done this with a new pup, I've always held off on the vet until their next vaccination was due. Thoughts?
  2. I'm buying a soft crate off eBay too, because that's the only place I can get one big enough!
  3. I really dislike vets that so avidly push a certain food. I know you said he said he's not affiliated with any company, but come on. Does his clinic sell Advance? I'd be willing to bet money that they do. I also dislike vets that say "This is the best dog food and every single dog should eat it, end of story." Any vet worth their weight would know that not all dogs do well on a particular food, and some have very specific requirements. I fed BH to my adults for a while and was very happy with it. I looked into feeding my Bernese puppy the puppy formula, but in the end decided against it and went with a specific large breed puppy formula, Pro Plan, as directed by his breeder. Now I have a Saint pup on the way and will be feeding him Royal Canin Giant, again as directed by his breeder. At the end of the day it's your decision. Personally I'd be feeding a specific large breed formula at least for the first 12 months of your Akita's life. All the best :)
  4. 8 sleeps for me too, it was meant to be 6 but the bloody airline decided they're not flying to Adelaide next Wednesday anymore
  5. Most parents of young kids that we encounter are bloody useless. Just the other day I was walking Moose, and coming the other way was a woman and her son of about 4 years old. As we passed the mother said "Now hold my hand and stay close or that big dog will eat you!" I said to the little boy "He's actually very friendly and loves pats! Would you like to meet him?" The mother glared at me and said "I don't think so. He's scared of dogs." Ummm...is it any wonder? ETA: Sorry Mantis, I shouldn't have turned this into a negative thread, the boy you encountered sounds like he has a good head on his shoulders :) Well done to him and it must have been lovely for you to witness :)
  6. Still no Raiden pics here? I know it must be hard to tear yourself away Lhok! :) 7 sleeps for me
  7. wouldn't that be too much to put the dog under again in such short time? Usually the vet wouldn't recommend it. My Snowy get his hernia and desexed done when he was 8 months. Vet prefer to get it done one time. as for the other male pup I am referring, his hernia was too big and risky. You could easily wait until a dog was 12-14 months old before desexing. Yes, this is what I meant :)
  8. I've never heard of that. I personally don't agree with desexing tiny babies. Is there a particular reason you want to? :) it was due to a hernia that needed to be fix at 6 - 8 weeks old and vet has recommended to desexed at the same time to avoid for putting him under few months later I see. Personally I'd put my pup under again, rather than desex early. And I don't take the decision to put a dog under lightly at all.
  9. My boy will be eligible for Baby at the Royal too! ....JUST! we're talking a matter of three days! I have no doubt he'll be the biggest baby Sounds like a wonderful litter, I'm sure you'll get a great pup! And I agree, temperament and health come first for me. No good having a pup who wins but is shy or nasty. Give me a not-conformationally-perfect pup any day over that! They do show training at the Rotty Club :) used to be Thurs nights from memory, not sure if you already know that or not!
  10. Woohoo! Do you have any pics? ETA: are you planning to go to any show training classes?
  11. Great to hear Lhok! :) I get my boy next Wednesday now! :D Just transferred the funds to the breeder (ouch! Although the flight was much less than we originally thought luckily!) and ordered his crate off eBay and went and bought food, brushes and toys. My bank account is sad now
  12. I've never heard of that. I personally don't agree with desexing tiny babies. Is there a particular reason you want to? :)
  13. Yay welcome home Raiden! So happy for you Lhok! He sounds amazing :)
  14. Wow 2 sleeps! Then I hope we will be overloaded with Raiden pics!
  15. My breeder just gave me the greatest news! :D She originally thought pup had to be 3 calendar months old to fly here to Aus (from NZ) which would have been 11th June, but now that she's looked into it further it turns out he can fly anytime from 8 weeks! She would prefer him to have had his second vaccination though so will be sending him at 10 weeks, but even so that is a million times better for me! 10 weeks old would make it the 20th May and it's my birthday on the 21st, how perfect :) But now I'm thinking....oh my gosh I need to go shopping!!!
  16. I think the k9+ one is going to be too short. Width and length are ok but not the height. Has anyone got one of the NFS crates? http://www.nfspetsupplies.com/c/4332601/1/soft-crates.html
  17. Those k9+ crates look really good, and thanks Jules for the tip about eBay! I've just sent my breeder a message to enquire if their largest size will be big enough. Thanks.
  18. Hi all. I'll be welcoming home a new Saint Bernard puppy in June, and I need a new soft crate. I own one already which I got from K9 Pro, and I love it, but they're out of stock of the size I need at the moment. Where have others bought their largest crates from? Can't remember what I paid for my K9 Pro one but I remember thinking it was amazing for the price! So I'd like one that's not too expensive but is still a quality product. Thanks :)
  19. Love the name Mr Smooshyface  Ran it past my OH though and he said no, can't imagine why? And come on, when do you get Raiden?? :D
  20. Nacho! He's a Chihuahua but his ears haven't quite popped yet. I was thinking Chi, but he looks so much bigger than what I imagined a Chi pup would be :) super cute though! Wish our pups could meet
