  1. Know your breed standard back to front, and apply every aspect when looking at the pups. Personally I'd be a bit wary of someone saying "this pup SHOULD be fine for showing" as a good breeder will only want the very best of their dogs out in the ring, it's their kennel name and reputation after all! The breeders you're dealing with, do they all show? Perhaps you could try finding someone else within your breed who shows and has dogs you like, but doesn't necessarily breed, and ask them to help you find a good breeder or even ask their opinion on a particular pup. If you can't do that, the next time a breeder tries to promote a pup with show potential to you, ask them why. Get them to explain to you why this pup is better than its littermates in plain English so you can understand and hopefully start to get a better grasp on what makes a good dog. Also just remember that no one should every sell you a show quality pup, even the most promising looking youngsters only ever have show POTENTIAL. Good luck! :)
  2. Boxbright I'd steer clear of any breeder trying to "force" a puppy on you! But sounds like you have anyway. The wait sucks alright! Lhok I am excited for you!
  3. Also don't touch any dogs without asking first, as per in normal circumstances ;)
  4. I'm new to showing but happy to answer as best as I can :) Are spectators allowed? Yes! Is there usually an admission fee? No, not to come and watch. Can I bring my dogs? I don't think there's any rule saying you CAN'T, but it's probably better not to. That way you can talk to breeders (if that's something you want to do) without having to worry about your dog. Some dogs at shows do not appreciate other dogs in "their" space (eg. in their gazebo, or near their crate/trolley) Any other do's or don'ts to make sure we don't get in the way of proceedings and/or look like complete newbs? I would say feel free to approach people to chat about their breed and dogs, but not while they're preparing to go into the ring or in the middle of grooming or training, as it can be a very busy time for the exhibitor. Watch the dogs being exhibited without obstructing anyone else's view (don't stand in front of a gazebo where there are people sitting and clearly watching the show.) Don't make any negative comments about the dogs or exhibitors as you never know who is friends with who and who might be listening! If you have no idea how a show is run, it might pay to find someone who is happy to sit with you and explain the proceedings, eg. which class is currently being exhibited and why some dogs come back into the ring, etc. Have fun!
  5. Another question, also posted in the FAQ thread: Question about the Adelaide Royal - I'm hoping I haven't made a big mistake Are baby puppies ONLY judged on the baby puppy day? In this case Sunday 8th Sept 2013? Or can you enter them on their actual breed day AS WELL? In this case Saints are on Tuesday 10th Sept 2013. I've entered Sumo only on the Sunday, now I'm wondering if we could have/should have done both days? Thoughts? Thanks.

  7. Use these dryers and when they fail throw them away as they are not worth getting them repaired at this price. Also disregard the wattage rating as almost all quote figures are not true as there is no regulation or policing on these dryers from China. The true power of a dryer is it's current rating. Dryers such as Oldfield made here in Australia have a current rating in amps on the nameplate. Thanks for the info. So what's a good current rating then?
  8. Well I own two double coated giant breeds, one of which I show. So it would be used once or twice a month on him and a few times a year on the other pet dog. I'm wondering if I should just bite the bullet and buy a name brand more expensive one. These are just soooo cheap though that I think I want to try one first!
  9. What brand minxy? I've found a few for under $100 and I figure I may as well try one for that price???
  10. As the title reads, has anyone ever bought a dog dryer from eBay? There are a couple I'm looking at: http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com.au/viewitem?index=0&sbk=1&nav=SEARCH&itemId=140985159645 http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com.au/viewitem?index=0&sbk=1&nav=SEARCH&itemId=390474102247 http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com.au/viewitem?index=0&sbk=1&nav=SEARCH&itemId=350829156197 There's heaps of others too. The prices just seem too good to be true, so I'm thinking they probably are? What's a good wattage for a dog dryer?
  11. I've done a lot of research on bloat too and have also never seen it mentioned.
  12. I've never heard of ice causing bloat before?
  13. Thankyou Troy for taking the time to respond :)
  14. I think turkey necks are quite good too. Loved your detailed post Hockz, thanks for the info. May I ask how much it costs you to feed all that meat? I occasionally find cheap stuff but never enough of it. I have fed a variation of a prey model diet in the past, but am currently using kibble. I don't trust myself to get it 100% perfect for my baby Saint Bernard puppy, and I refuse to take the risk. It's something I'm always very interested in though so I enjoy these threads a lot.
  15. I'll admit to my boyfriend also "showing" the dogs where to pee
  16. Thanks puppy_dawgs and Troy. Troy the catalogue I didn't have, we only won Baby of Breed there so it didn't ask for the total entries. It only asked for them when I enters our Baby in Group win. Hope this sounds correct :)
  17. Ohh thanks, I'm on my phone and can't see avatars :)
  18. Seems nothing's changed, they're still relatively expensive to feed! And certainly not for everyone :) Only those of us crazy enough to enjoy living with dogs who outweigh us, who more often than not come with the added bonus of drool! Ahhhh :)
  19. What breed do you have RallyValley? And any idea when you will have babies? I still love this thread too even though I'm no longer waiting, I still read every day. Can't quite tear myself away yet! :)
  20. Love him he's adorable congrats on having him home! :D How old is he?
  21. Hi all I'm new to showing and the DOL pointscore. Just trying to submit some results for my pup, and it's asking for "Number of entries in SHOW". I still have the catalogue, however it was a three day show with just the one catalogue. Some entries (my own pup included) have only Sat and Sun listed next to them, while many have Fri, Sat and Sun. The very last entry is a Shar Pei puppy bitch who is number 372. Now is the total number of entries in show 372? This would not be correct for the Friday though would it? And I'm sure there are others, not having looked through the whole catalogue, who weren't there on the Sat or Sun. Do I need to go through and count? In this instance I am trying to enter a Baby of Group win for Saturday, so would I count all the entries for Saturday? Or all the babies in my group for Saturday? Or just go with the 372 number? So confused! I hope my post has made at least some sense! Also for another show, I no longer have the catalogue. Is there another way of getting the number of entries?
