I have a a BARF 1 and love it, got it after using my friends 1. She has had hers about 5 or 6 years now and it is still great. Mine is about 3 years old and going strong. Unlike most hydrobaths it is not made from fibreglass but from a type of plastic - the sort they use for making rain water tanks. Some people say the dogs will scratch it and bacteria could breed in it. No scratches in mine from the dogs. Should add there is a non slip lift up floor in it made from a different material. The only scratch on mine is on an outside edge where I managed to ram into a brick wall while trying to move it 1 day. Some people also don't like that the pump is exposed. For me this was a good thing - easier to get to and repair should it ever need it.

I should clarify I didn't specifically ask, I just rocked up with vaccination cert as I had trained there in the past and showed it to them, nothing was said and I was provided a membership card. You could possibly try Munno Para as well, they train Monday nights for Obedience and Tuesdays for Agility. There is also Virginia Community Dog Club - a small non DogsSA affiliated club but very good instructors, more "pet focus" than trial focus. Usually a really nice atmosphere out there. I go out there sometimes as well, just because I like it Wich makes me think it has been a while since I paid them a visit, may do that sometime soon...

I train out at Gawler and Jazz only has a C3 - didn't have a problem with that, they just asked to see a vac certificate. I thought most clubs just asked to see proof of vaccination, wasn't aware some now wanted more than a C3.

It depends on the positive trainer, and linking it purely to positive training IMO is not fair. A large part of the puppy classes I used to run was handling your dog - squeezing toes, lifting ear flaps, tapping teeth, teaching them to take a tablet, teaching them to accept having the scruff grabbed, general "rough" handling such as tapping them on top of the head and reaching straight over the top like some people do to pat a dog. Depending on the clinic if we were able to access a vet table to put them on we did that as well. I also handled the puppies as well as having other class members handle each persons puppy (Not as in pass the pupy - was never a fan of that but as a structured activity with 2 ppl swapping and me supervising then another 2 swapping etc. Took a bit longer but I felt it was far safer for all) Doing my Cert IV through Delta probably made me more aware of the importance of handling than I was prior to it.

I was talking with the lady receiving the obedience ones on Friday and she sad it would be fine if she knew she was getting it. If you download the obedience form for the seminar from DogsSA it has her email address and phone number. ETA: Shouldn't matter that you don't have a SACA number, I know a couple of non members that are going along to watch.

How disappointing that they appear to have changed the formula so drastically and made it more like the many other dry foods available out there I had clearly incorrectly assumed that given the name and packaging were the same it would be the same or at least very similar formula to the original and they were just making locally to avoid the mport problems.

They are launching a webpage for it but still under construction. Probably worth keeping an eye on though for ingredient info: http://www.nutro.com.au/

At 13 and 16 years of age I would be looking at quality of life and minimising pain. If metacam is what will give them the best quality of life then I would be using it, just give with food to minimise effects on the stomach. Or talk to your vet about other options. My old boy Reagan was on cualgesic for a cople of years then another drug I forget the name of (not rimadyl) and it kept him moving another year or so quite comfortably.

You can also vet wrap the back feet for the same purpose. Piper had a hot spot on her belly once and that is what the vet did to stop her scratching it. Her tummy soon stopped bothering her s she thought someone had broken her legs and couldn't work out how to walk! luvsdogs in a few days time you will be wondering how to keep her quiet, they bounce back so quickly.

LOL. Oops sorry. Yes I have enoyed the other thread

Interesting, I just read 1 of your other topics and noted that in 1 of your recipes you use 50% chicken mince and another you use lamb mince? I'm all for variety and feed my dogs a diet comprising a high percentage of raw meaty bones but I don't understand why post this and state the raw meat you use is Kangaroo when you have just posted elsewhere something to the contrary? Such postings are asking for people to comment and question which you apparently don't like.

A pet food place in Elizabeth although for the past month or so they haven't had any which is a bugger as it is nice to give them something different and they are not overly expensive plus Piper LOVES them.

My border collies cope well with roo segments. The bits we get are normally cut into about 10cm lengths so consist of several vetebrae. Piper gets through hers in about half an hour, bone and all. Jazz takes about double that. They are a good chewimg meal for them.

I will agree with what Ness said on this. Food is a training AID. People tend to rely on it as a crutch for too long and yes then the dog will learn to wait for treat to be presented. All of my current dogs have been taught using +r and clicker work, none of them rely on a treat to perform a known behaviour on cue. Food should rapidly be reduced as a lure (1 CGC instructor I worked with allowed people to lure for a new behaviour for 1 lesson only, by the end of the lesson she would have them fading that lure. Initially I thought she was mad but quickly saw in majority of cases dogs had a much higher level of compliance than those who continued to lure for weeks on end) and move quickly to treat stage and then randomised. Random rewards (both in frequency and type of reward) give a stronger response so all of mine also receive non food rewards from early on as well as food of differing values - they will work as eagerly in a training session for a piece of kibble as for a piece of roast chicken as for a tug toy or a ball. And will also perform multiple repetitions of known behaviours for nothing at all other than the chance of a reward. Note I say known behaviours - when training a new behaviour it is heavily reinforced, that is not lure but treat presented after behaviour has been completed. As soon as I am getting a reliable response (80 - 90% or greater) to the cue then we move to a random schedule of reinforcement.

Close to Glenelg they would be my best suggestion as well. They run a wide range of classes including agility. However they are not a "trial" club but a pet dog club so you may find later on you want to go somewhere else to do ring work and more precision tuff but they will certainly give you a very good grounding. Some of their instructors have competed in both obedience and agility so know what is required for these disciplines.

It's great. Heelwork To Music comp at the moment and watched a mary Ray training demo before as well as some agility. I think they also show things like Police Dog demos as well as the competitive events. It is on from early evening our time each night for the next 3 or 4.

If you look into feeding a raw diet they will talk about the quantity of food consumed in a day as a percentage of body weight. My girls, as adults gets around 2% of theur body weight, forget how much pups should get but it is obviously higher due to them growing and needing more. Hopefully someone else will help a little more or do a search on DOL or google for BARF diets or raw food diets and see what you find.

Tubby Border Collie + Question About Bum Fur
piper replied to jaybeece's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Piper who puts on weight by lookin at food and is best at around 16.5kg gets either a chicken carcass trimmed of fat or other bone (she gets the smallest least fatty out of a bag of bones) or if hving dry food around 2/3 - 3/4 a cup per day. My undrstanding is Artemis is a super premium so IMO 1.5 cups per day is too much for a dog losing weight. Jazz is who is super active and like a bean pole gets between that and 2 cups per day or a large untrimmed chicken carcass or other decent size bone. My 2 boys when they were alive used to get about 1 level cup of dry per day. As for "bum nuggets" - never heard of that being a problem. They can know up back there is ungroomed though. In 14 years I have never trimmed 1 of my dogs coats at all, just a semi regular brush out, less often with the girls than my old boys due to less coat and different coat texture. -
It does have some benefits - it has offal in it as well plus flax seed, kelp and a few other things. I am slack when it coes to giving offal, never end up giving it as often as I should, so at least with the occasional patty plus the occasional offal that I give them they are getting a bit more offal.
-
If my girls showed preferences to food I could give you a true response They ate them, but then Jazz also ate part of a blue tongue lizard she caught today as well so lets just say she doesnt exactly have discerning tastebuds. I'm not sure I will use them alot, they do appear to have split peas in as fillers that are not listed in the ingredients and seemd a it watery but for $3.89 a bag I will keep them on hand as emergency food I think.
-
They are less than $4 and only 8 patties in a pack and Ness will eat them anyway won't she?

In terms of how long they can hold on, es they should be able to hold on all nigt but as he is used to being outside doing what he wants he may go during the night. You might find you want to offer him an out middle of the night and gradually move the time you ive him a wee break towards the time you would normally get up, if that makes sense? Piper used to be a shocker when we went away for going to the toilet, she would hold on for about the first 24 hours before she would go!! So in theory holding overnight should be no problem. Jazz probably only needed a middle of the night wee break for about the first week, then just the occasional night she would be unsettled. OUrs all slep inside and we still have nights where at 2am someone wants to go out for a few minutes (though sometimes I am sure that is cat over the fence related!)
