And to confuse the herding 1s further, if the title is on the same course but with multiple stock (eg the dog has intermediate title on A course sheep as well as A course ducks) it is combined into 1 title so HIAsd rather than HIAs HIAd

False Pregnancy? Or Getting Ready For Heat?
piper replied to Antoun's topic in General Dog Discussion
No idea. I cant see her behaviour, dont know her normal behaviour and am not a vet. Once again I would suggest speaking to the person you got her from and finding out what is normal for her in regards to behaviour before/after seasons and if she has had phantoms. I hope her breeders are assisting you as mentor or that you have an experienced mento on hand given that it looks like she was with you for her litter at the end of last year. A good mentor is great when there are things like this you re unsure of. -
False Pregnancy? Or Getting Ready For Heat?

If what you have written is correct she has not had a season at all this year in which case yes she could come in at any time. -
Aw a bit too big for a dog coat then, lol.

Sturdy Enough For A Border Collie?
piper replied to Rilla-My-Rilla's topic in General Dog Discussion
It definitely depends on the individual - I have never had 1 that has looked to get out of anything and all have respected baby gates as barriers, even as adults. They have never tried eating their way out either. The closest I have had to it in any of mine was Reagan - he was mostly an outside dog by choice and if you made him come inside when he didn't want to he would open the back door and let himself back out, lol. He also knew how far he could go out the door before he couldn't get back in so if he was inside and heard a noise he wuold go part the way out, look around and decide if it was worth following up and if not would back himself up and go back inside. Out of my litter of 9 last year I had 1 who would look for ways to get out and her first night home she happily got out of her puppy pen but none of the others reported their pups doing that. I used the Bunnings panels here at home and she was the only pup to get out of them here as well. What I would say though is once a border has learnt to do something - good luck as it will keep repeating it, so in Rilla's case a roofed pen or crate are most definitely the better options :) -
Tiny Pony is going to stick, lol. What size rug is it?

Maybe he needs dog coats. LOL That 1 looks like it is going to drag on the ground. He is the cutest thing. Does he have a name? I only ever see him called Tiny Pony (I will admit to stalking the horse thread in Off topic as well :) )

Wow, what a shame that it is so hard to start a dog off in Victoria. I understand triallers wanting to train at multiple clubs but in a way they are also limiting the future of the sport by preventing new people from starting out. I am glad it is not like that in SA and those wanting to train are easily able to.

False Pregnancy? Or Getting Ready For Heat?

Is it possible to ask the former owners how often she cycles and when her last one was? Date of last litter doesn't really give you any idea. My girl for example only cycles once every 10 months but was a bit longer between when she had her litter. -
Adore!! I would print this and put this on my wall - WANT! I loved this 1 as well and thought it would make an awesome print :)

Congratulations Janba. More judges, yippee!! :)

Oh no Dova!!! Will keep my fingers crossed that it is a simple soft tissue strain and doesn't affect her in the long term.

Someone joined up today, posted in 2 threads about crates saying some store has the best prices in Aust. Exact same thing in both threads. The post appears to be gone now so my guess is the topic was bumped by spam that Troy has since removed. :)

Evaluating A Sports Prospect Puppy
piper replied to Kavik's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I know a few lovely Noonbarra working kelpies and I know that they were really good in helping a friend get the right dog. She told them about her other kelpies, issues she had and what she was wanting and they told her which of their planned matings would provide the best options for her and also which 1s would definitely not be suitable and why. I suggested Noonbarra as an option to her after having someone come to 1 of my puppy classes years ago with a lovely Noonbarra boy. The breeders obviously put a lot of time into them - he brought along the puppy pack he had been given to show me and they had so much good information in there. It was fantastic and the puppy was such a well adjusted young lad. -
Evaluating A Sports Prospect Puppy
piper replied to Kavik's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I wish Pat Hastings thought the same I went to her most recent workshop here in Sydney and was very surprised to hear her say, when asked, that she would never tell a prospective 'pet owner' (and she included sports prospects) of any of the structural faults in a dog that she was rejecting for the show ring... She wouldnt sell pups with structural faults to sporting homes so thats a null point. I personally wouldnt tell prospective pet homes the problems their pup has either- its a demographic of people who are on average not interested in anything other than temperament and health. I would disclose if I thought there would be problems later in life and I would disclose if I was asked but there is no way I would taint the relationship of a puppy owner !! Particularly when the 'fault' might be trivial and will never impact on the dogs life. ie sorry I rejected your pup because it had 5 degrees less angulation through the stifle than what I find desirable. In all honesty they dont care about the angulation AND you have just told them the pup was a reject. As opposed to an adorable pup that was selected because it was the perfect match for them. This. It also depends when talking about a sporting pup what the "fault" was - if there is not enough stop or the muzzle is too long/too narrow then it is not going to affect it's ability as a sporting dog. However if we are talking leg to boy length ratio or something like that which would impact on the ability to do the job bred for then no it wouldn't be sold to that type of home. I would however say to someone enquiring about a performance pup if they particularly like a pup based on temperament that I dont feel it is suitable for their purpose due to the the structure. -
Great pics. Wow eglobal are expensive on shipping - sounds like they have a flat rate as I only paid that for my whole camera body.

Well I am still buggered today after 2 long and busy days. Jazz however seems to have recovered well and is bouncing around as though she has had no exercise at all rather than the hours and hours of work in the mud yesterday! I had Piper in Advanced A ducks and had a good run but missed attempts at the Y, happy with how she worked though. The ducks were sure there was something deadly in the mouth of that Y and just did not want a bar of it. Normally once they are on the fence it is quite easy to get them in there but not these 5. Jazz was then in Inter A ducks and gained a nice solid pass and ended up State Champion on ducks as the only qualifier over the weekend. Next up Jazz had a run on Inter A sheep and got to the Z but just could not get the heads to turn and get them through. We had them in the mouth several times but couldn't get that last bit. Very happy with her work though as she really doesn't like confrontation and she did an awesome job hanging in there and applying pressure to the sheep but the best we could get was 2 turned. thrilled though that she didn't revert to her usual behaviour when the going gets tough and revert to fetching them and instead held her drive line for me and took the small inside flanks I was giving in an attempt to reposition them. After that Jazz moved to the wet, slippery, muddy yards and was stock dog for the remainder of the day. She did a great job in there as well with splitting sheep, moving in small pens and up and down raceways as well as taking them approx 50 to 60m each run out to the set up point. When we decided to bring a second flock in for the test levels, I sent her out into the paddock and she went the full length (around 250m) without me needing to go further than the gate. I love working her and that I can turn my back on her and go where I need to go and know that she will have found the stock and will fetch them sensibly. Saturday afternoon we even used her to move around some non dog broke lambs and she was just as sensible with those as she is with the dogged down stock and soon had them working towards me and standing calmly just 2m off of me. State Champion sheep went to a lovely working kelpie from started. Most Versatile Worker to Jazz meaning I got to bring the beautiful shepherds crook I donated home with me :) Can't wait to see Jdavis's photos - hopefully she will share them on here. She spent the whole weekend snapping away.

Holding On To The Dumbell Issues
piper replied to Sparty's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I would totally change the picture then and keep the dumbbell retrieve totally different. Would definitely back chain it and probably start sitting on a chair so the whole thing looks nothing like the usual "game". And I would not add the throw for a long time - just carry, hold and present. Piper used to struggle to transition from stand to sit so we did lots of sit in front, be given the dumbbell and I would shuffle back and call her to front. Built that up to hold it, move back several metres and call to front. After that I went to placing it on the ground and returning to her and sending and then eventually throwing it. -

The other thing I just thought of - is that how you hbe played fetch games with them? The spit and stare sounds like they have a expectation for you to pick it up or kick it. So I would be careful not to play that game with any toy while trying to fix the problem. Jazz used to do similar with her frisbee, I went and sat outside with a book and ignored her until she offered more again and eventually presented it to me. She went through a period of frustration but eventually nudged it at Koch point I threw it again and next time waited for mouth on it not nudge etc. The first few attempts I got plenty of reading done (I took the book so I didnt end up sitting and staring at her or giving any other body cues.) but within a few sessions she started progressing quickly. -

I used this method: http://www.shirleychong.com/keepers/retrieve.html -
Same. I used to use chunkers but found even with plenty of time on the expiry date they had to be put in the freezer as soon as opened or they would go gross in the fridge in a day.

Oh Dova, I hope everyone and everything is ok? That explains your quick stop in today, you should have let me know and I could have made the trip out to you to collect the crook. Summary of today - not a lot of runs but we expect B course day to be quieter. No passes by any dogs on ducks. We have never run B course ducks before. Piper failed at the pen - just couldnt get them in there but I learnt a few things with that run and Jazz had the benefit of that and did manage to pen but had unfortunately run out of points. I also discovered that the hold ring with ducks is damend hard work - those buggers just dont stop easily! B course sheep - Jazz crossed on the outrun and I swore at her for it. LOL. She was correct though and I should never have sent her the way I did, after that she put in a really lovely round. Lost 7 points on the outrun and had a total score at the end of 89.5 so thrilled with the rest of her work (and in fact after she crossed she completed a lovely shaped outrun and quiet lift!). That gained her High In Trial for today. :) Trial 2 which is A course tomorrow :)

They are saying scattered showers but I am planning on gum boots and wet weather gear! Vetting is from 8am I think or 8:15 and trial from 9am.
