  1. I stopped as I found it made no difference at all for my guys. I know others who say it works though. If it is the ends that are red they are possibly sun bleached or old dead ends. I think it is in that situation that the kelp won't do much.
  2. No idea on capsule. I used to add kelp powder to their veggie mix once a week and it was only ever like half a teaspoon or so.
  3. Change is just hitting Adelaide. A very sudden wind swing and temp drop - 6 degrees in as many minutes. Now crossing fingers that the winds don't cause havoc with the fires burning.
  4. Thanks heaps. BC crazy, Yeah, Munch is in the last stages of losing teeth. Her breeder wants to show her in two weeks... Got home from work last week to find one ear standing up. Whiting/snowcal is just calcium carbonate. They use it in line marking on sports fields. Much nicer than cement. I was trying to work out what it was. Cool - we have heaps of that at work if I ever have 1 that needs it. I am guessing mixing it with leather softener would work as well then like the cement powder does.
  5. I thought about it too but the air con is my office is WAY better than at home. If it wasn't for the dogs being out in it, I would have stayed at work until they locked up. LOL. eta: I can get away with taking a dog in during school holidays but I wouldn't get away with all 3 and I can't just take 1, that wouldn't be fair.
  6. Yes SA Police have shared on Facebook an update - burning S/SE towards Pallamana and Reedy Creek Roads. Monarto is under threat. Reedy-Creek and Mannum roads are both closed and someone has been transported to hospital I hate lightening at this time of year.
  7. I have apparently done so many thunderstorm parties that when I couldn't find Cinna I went outside and she was having a wonderful time running around playing with a bucket she had stolen. LOL
  8. Sounds like a perfect ending for both parties. I am sure the family are terribly sad but on the other hand happy to see they found the right place. Congratulations. I love the smile on his face in the first pic :)
  9. Yeah I am definitely not too sold on the DNA results as they also claimed Bedlington Terrier was in the mix and that's even more uncommon than Irish Terrier. I think I'll just stick with Great Dane cross for now  That's good, some people get quite stuck on "but the test says". And ignore my brindle comment - on my phone she looked brindle. On my computer she does not :)
  10. She is very cute and going to be very big :) For what it is worth, take the DNA results with a grain of salt. They are not known to be accurate. The combination of breeds listed for her Mum - I don't think any of them even come in brindle so that would mean there has to at least be something else. Someone will correct me if I am wrong though :) And Irish terriers are not exactly a common breed so I find it hard to imagine 1 of those in her background.
  11. I've never heard of this before. Wouldn't towels/sheets/blankets/tinted glass work as well? I think the difference is it reflects the sun and does not absorb the heat. Towels/blankets etc I think would absorb the heat. Tinted glass would also work but not something that can be quickly and easily done.
  12. I have seen cement powder and leather softener mixed together and used. Didn't seem to dry it out or cause any issues, I am guessing the leather softener assisted with that.
  13. I would pop into the Great Dane thread in the breed sub-forum and ask there or have a read and see if it has already been discussed. I think i remember a thread in the Health forum on food for growing giant breeds too.
  14. Another thought - if you have a verandah/pergola you could get 1 of those misting kits and a timer so it cycles on and of keeping an area cool and damp. I can;t find the kit on Bunnings page, but this is the timer http://www.bunnings.com.au/holman-electronic-tap-timer-misting-system-co1709_p3430071 I am now thinking of popping over to see if I can find 1 for our pergola... I like the sound of that timer, it sounds like it can be set to give 5 mins of mist every hour.
  15. Oh no Got any family or friends that would have them for the day for you?
  16. Would this be low enough http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-3-IN-1-MULTI-FUNCTION-PET-STROLLER-DOG-CAT-PRAM-PORTABLE-CARRIER-CAR-SEAT-/350868556367?pt=AU_Pet_Supplies&hash=item51b1654a4f&_uhb=1] or http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Outward-Hound-Dog-and-Cat-Pet-Pram-Stroller-Carrier-/221336053076?pt=AU_Pet_Supplies&hash=item3388a82554&_uhb=1
  17. kc or anyone else - do you know if those portable evaporative coolers work well enough and quietly enough to be of any value in 40+ degree heat in a bedroom? I found this one at Bunnings - and its less than the price of two days of doggie daycare… thoughts? TIA We bought 1 similar a couple of years ago in desperation when our air con died in a heat wave and no one could get to us to fix it for days. They need to have good fresh air intake as peers said - so be put in front of an open window or something. Also, unless you can get home and refill it at lunchtime I don't think the wage in it would last all day. The colder the water the more effective they are so we made sure we kept water in the fridge and lots of trays of ice and would use cold water and ice in it to maximise the cooling.
  18. This looks suitable for a Westie. http://www.soldsmart...43&cam=32&u=104 eta: lots on ebay http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.Xdog+stroller&_nkw=dog+stroller&_sacat=0&_from=R40
  19. I bought the Homeart mats last year. They loved them then but have not touched them again this year. I will put them in a shaded area though and they may want them next week when it is stinking hot. The alfoil idea - I think I got from here. It was easy to do, and I might do them again myself just to help keep the house cool. Spray bottle of water, a rubber window cleaner thing and alfoil. Spray the window so it is damp, line the alfoil up at the top and then let the roll fall and use the window cleaner starting at the top working down to get it to stick. I did it on the outside of the windows and it lasted months. If done on the inside, it would last forever I think. The windows did need a good clean when it came off though.
  20. Are they outside or inside? I go back to work next week (typical that it hits when I am not home and ale to keep dogs in the cool) so tonight i have started soaking down under our couple of good shady trees. I will keep wetting that area every night for a good half hour to hour with a soaker hose. It stays in deep shade all day so my aim is to keep the soil cool. This way the dogs can get under it and have somewhere cool to lay and dig themselves a hollow if they want. I will also have 2 clam shells out in different areas of the yard so there is always plenty of water and also always 1 in the shade. I will freeze 2l water bottles and put these on their sack beds as well as having some frozen ice cream containers turned out for them to be able to lick/chew/play with. Before going to work I will spend about a half an hour outside wetting down the whole pergola area. Luckily I am home by 3:30 and it doesn't get the sun until late afternoon. And while it won't stay wet for a huge amount of time this does cool the pavers for quite a while. If they are inside and your house is not very cool - have you considered putting alfoil over the windows exposed to the sun if they do not have good shutters over them? I did it with 2 of ours that get direct sun last year when I had the puppies and was trying to keep the place cool during a heat wave and it made a massive difference. The house was dark but it was definitely cooler. I would even do things like leave the bathroom open and shower door open - the floor of the shower will stay damp and cool for a few hours and give them a cool place to lay. Fans place somewhere they can't knock them over as even a breeze can be helpful. Frozen water bottles placed places they like to lay down. Hope those ideas help. And I will be watching with interest for more ideas for my guys too.
  21. 2/52 It is day 1 of a heat wave here. The border collies are already bored and unimpressed.
  22. I didn't even know that ablation was an option. We had a 6 year old boy desexed many years ago, the sac filled with fluid for maybe a week and then gradually shrunk to nothing. I suppose it took a couple of months for that to happen. Personally I can't see any reason for it to be surgically removed.
  23. Easily done :) I went back and double checked that I hadn't imagined it being said.
  24. Given that the OP said they received a PM from the breeder, my guess is the breeder does know that it is being discussed here.
  25. 1 of my puppy buyers recommends Nadia from Aldgate as well, she has had great support with issues around 1 of her other pets. Ness beat me to suggesting Scholars in Collars for training as well :)
