  1. I've never understood the whole 2 different prices thing, and I'm pretty certain at this stage, unless someone convinces me otherwise, that I will sell all future WSSD puppies at the same price (unless it's under a partnership agreement or something.) I figure that regardless of pet or show, the same amount of thought & care is put into each puppy, they all cost the same to raise, feed, worm, vacc, and only a matter of a few dollars difference between main & limited rego. Well look at it from this angle then. The breeder spends many years of dedication, showing, feeding, rearing, importing quality dogs and making sure that the best possible dogs are bred from. When someone buys a show prospect they are making an investment in all that time and effort someone else has put into the breeding of their dog. Thus a $1,500-$2,000 is a good investment on a quality, well bred dog bred from someone elses blood sweat and tears. The pet buyer on the other hand wants would include a sound, healthy, well tempremented dog. They don't want to have spend $2,000 on a dog because, and I've read many pet buyers say on this forum all the time, they are buying a pet and don't want to breed or show. Thus the breeder LOWERS the price for the pet buyer to say around $500-$800 and get a limited registered dog. IMO they are getting a bargain, especially since alot of show quality dogs DO go to pet homes and a good home is usually preferred regardless. Your'e quite right and doesn't matter what the breed.
  2. Yep, now you are a real breeder. My condolences at your sad loss.
  3. I remember a discussion about this some years ago and some thought it may have been the extender that the semen is placed in for storage. (May have just been a myth) Good luck and let us all know how it turns out.
  4. I agree I always say similar in that we don't have dog problems we have people problems.
  5. The vet who spoke to me about the Nobivac vaccines had just arrived from the UK.
  6. Yes, but is she doing it in delight, or telling you not to ?.
  7. No...my Jersey cow was looking nervous when I went up to do the horses tonight! Your Jersey cow phoned and asked me to pass on that Jersey liver is definitely NO good. Hope the puppy is thriving.
  8. I have been told there efficiency depends on where they are placed. It may take some time to find the best place to install them. If the batteries are discharged that quickly it means that the dogs are barking so frequently it is proof that they are in fact working. Possibly not in the most effective place to discourage the dogs.
  9. How very unusual, maternal antibodies are normally only produced for the first 24/48 hours following parturition. I normally give puppy vaccs followed by a booster at about 16 months of age (because the canine immune system doesn't mature until 6 months of age) then that's it for life. I never vaccinate for canine cough, nor do I titre test. To the OP, no I wouldn't vaccinate her. Yes very unusual. I suspect it may have happened more than the odd time though. I have often associated it with cry we often hear as to......... my pups were vaccinated and now they are dying of what they were vaccinated for. Often associated with their first attendance at a show.
  10. I never tell tell puppy buyers what to do. I to give lots of information and let them decide for themselves. I let them know what I do and what they do is up to them. Only one Titre test if anti bodies show up they are there for life. I have got to the stage that I have not bothered with Titre testing the last two litters. I also believe that if the pups are vaccinated around the 8 weeks of age the Nobivac works. One after 3 months and they are done for life as far as I am concerned. I also have a strict rule that the puppies are not allowed to nurse off the bitch from six weeks on. I know of a case where the puppies were nursing on the bitch and vaccinated and the bitch was producing HUGE amounts of anti bodies still at six weeks and the vaccine did not work. This was when we vaccinated pups at six weeks. Hence the whole litter was lost due to the amount of antibodies in the pups not allowing the vaccine to work. This was proven by the bitches milk being analysed. Unusual, yes, but if it can happen other bitches it might just happen to mine.
  11. There is show training classes at Caboolture run by the Caboolture Kennel Club, give them a ring the number should be in the back of your Dog World magazine. Show training classes are held at Durack on a Thursday night by the Terrier Club.
  12. One before three month and one after three months is what I do. If you are in doubt about the vaccinations Titer test. Now all you vet's and vet assistants don't have a go at me. (grin) A Vet told me that their will be available a vaccine at that if given at 10 weeks will suffice for life. It may even be available now. I think the vet may have been referring to a Nobivac product. I can't be more helpful than that as I have moved state and not had a litter for a long time.
  13. No, I'm sorry I don't remember the brand, but it was purchased in Australia, from Sydney I think. It could be, as far as I can remember plugged into the power, or battery operated. It worked that's all I can remember. I do remember that the company had some some that were shop damaged/soiled and were also selling these as their was such on the product that was all they had left at the time. Somebody else on the list may remember the brand.
  14. There is no way you would get me to vaccinate any bitch/dog after the initial due vaccinations as a puppy. NO WAY what so ever. If you are in doubt about the antibodies in the bitch/dog have a titer test done. If the anti bodies are there they are there for life. The only thing that will kill them off is irradiation or death.
  15. We had one in one of the boarding kennels where I worked years ago and after being installed the noise dropped to little or nothing. As soon as the new dogs that came in knew what it meant the barking would very minimal.
  16. Welcome to DOL. I to came from the horse world and still maintain an interest in it with one horse. I am sure you will enjoy the showing side too. Just takes a bit of time to learn how the points are awarded to get the title of Champion.
  17. I show some dogs on slip chains, but once the dog is home no form of collar what so ever. Once the dog is not attached to me off comes the collar no matter what kind. So many dogs die from back yard mishaps due to collars or slip chains. Many dogs die due to some form of misadventure due to collars of some kind being on at the time.
  18. No collars of any kind here unless I am attached.
  19. I would second Phil Thomas I believe he one of the best at surgical implants. You can get the same results as normal matings. You will get some that have large litters and some small and of course some don't conceive at all.
  20. Zip ties are good for this to, and I to use the dog clips to make a door way.
  21. Depending on the size of the puppies you want in the pen you can also place the panels length ways and it makes it a much larger pen.
  22. If it was to enforce the laws already in place I'd be there too.
  23. Lets explain what can happen when you go to purchase a pure bred dog. In SOME cases you may find the breeder will have two prices. One a higher price for a puppy of prospective show quality. This puppy would be on the MAIN register which allows you to what you want with the puppy. Show, breed or any other activity. For this you will also need to be a member of states controlling body. Secondly the LIMITED register or what some of us call pet quality. SOME breeders sell puppies that are not required for breeding or the show ring at lesser price. This allows you to do obedience and some other activities but not show or breed REGISTERED litters. This may clear up why we can get two prices. Either the puppy you are purchasing is a show prospect and you are charged accordingly or it is a pet. This does not mean that ALL breeders charge this way. Some breeders charge a flat rate for all their puppies and place them on the what they believe to be the appropriate register for that puppy. What happens between you and the breeder as regards to breeders terms is up to the both of you to decide what you believe to be fair for both parties. You have been given plenty of information as to regards that and I hope you find it all helpful in finding a suitable BMD.
  24. Does this sound like someone you want to have an ongoing interest in/control of your dog for quite a few years? I know, I am questioning how its all going to work. As I mentioned before, we live almost a 3hr drive away. She did state that breeders terms simply means that if he is a male and suitable for breeding, she retains breeding rights and can use him at her expense. This is fine by me, so long as we get some benefit. If we have to do the running around...and come away with nothing then I wont buy him. she has two prices, one is $1800 for limited, or $2600 for full papers. We will pay $1800 for him on terms. agreed it is a reduced rate, but we wouldnt be bothering unless we are given another pup for it down the line. My husband isnt so concerned. As he said to me, possession is nine tenths of the law, and if he's in our yard, he's ours...full stop. I can understand the two prices if one was for a show quality specimen and the other for pet quality. Two different prices for two different dog but not two prices for the one dog. If the dog is pet quality it should not be bred from. If the dog is show quality why is not being shown. Sorry I would run a mile.
  25. Why do you watch this show, you only add to the ratings. No ratings no show it's that easy.
