Vaccinating At 16 Wks ........ Do You Or Dont You?
oakway replied to Jsk's topic in General Dog Discussion
[i applaud Nobivac for the help they have given you. Isn't it a shame more company's don't do the same. Yes but do you see my point? The amount of maternal antibodies present are a ?? in most puppies that are sold, therefore it is safer to assume the puppy may take 14 days for immunity to build. You could say that it will take 36 hours for seroconversion in a given amount of puppies, but it is not a blanket rule and that was my point. I would not like to see people taking out puppies a few days after vaccination, when they most likely would have no idea if they are immune or not within that short space of time. No there won't be a problem if people stop over vaccinating their bitches. ;) If pups are taken off the bitch at 6 weeks and vaccinated at 8 weeks with an also appropriate vaccine. Thus giving time for the antibodies to become so low that the vaccine can do its job. There are some breeds that have been identified as problems. These, the breeders are aware of and vaccinate accordingly. There will always be an exception to the rule and we as breeders may come up against a puppy that may never be able to be vaccinated. -
Vaccinating At 16 Wks ........ Do You Or Dont You?

This is incorrect, it CAN take the full two weeks. I titre tested my puppy about 10 days after he was vaccinated and he had no immunity to parvo. At 15 days he DID. It took him the full two weeks to seroconvert. There may always be an exception to the rule . In your case it may have had something to do with the testing method or anything else, including maternal antibodies. Modern vaccines have a 36 hour turn around. You don't have to believe me, ask the vaccine company for the documented evidence. [Noah's second titer test was PAID for by Nobivac as part of their testing so I had a lot of interaction with them. I still believe it is untrue to say as a blanket statement that puppies will have seroconverted in a few days. The testing was fine, and if it WAS maternal antibodies, he's hardly going to be the only puppy with that issue. The point is, it is safer to assume a week or two as 'unsafe' than assure everyone the puppy will be immune, as he is evidence that the vaccines CAN take longer. Nobivac were particularly interested because they advise that at 10 weeks the vaccine still works despite the presence of maternal antibodies. Exactly what I said. Maternal antibodies. ;) If you purchased your puppy the breeder may have thought they were doing the right thing by vaccination the bitch before she came in season or during her pregnancy. This was thought to be correct. You may have bred your own puppy. Years ago we were told this would be correct. Not so now days. I applaud Nobivac for the help they have given you. Isn't it a shame more company's don't do the same. -

As far as I am concerned it has nothing to do with the vaccine it is to do with the age it is first administered. It is a known fact that the older the pup the pup the more effective the vaccine. Puppies should not be vaccinated under 8 weeks. It is also not true that the vaccine takes 2 weeks to be effective. The only vaccine on the market that I would trust is Nobivac. If you have any doubts about it, e mail them in Bendigo. I did a lot research on their vaccines and vet helped me get the data from Nobivac. Ask a vet that uses Nobivac. As newer vaccines are brought onto the market this may change. -

It depends on what type of Thyroid test you do. I think the one you would need is a T5. ( ???). Try this site for correct information. http://www.itsfortheanimals.com/THYROID-ARTICLES.HTM -

WARNING - *Off Topic* What do your lines go back to Oakway. I've got a double up on Khabaray Hugo Boss (lots of Hillsdown/Nevedith there) and I'm told that line is very late developing. It sure seems to be the case. Also warning off topic. Please take this as a joke that is the way it is meant to be. Oakway goes back to Oakway for so many generations now. LOL. I started with the Parkette bitch Ch Parkette Presteena as my foundation bitch. She was of English breeding Oakbark and Waycross. Happy to share any information that my be helpful. Everything I have comes from this one great bitch. I have used outside males but little or no infusion of female lines other than those associated with male lines. Yes , I have male infusions of Martinique, Hugo Boss and Nevedith through sons of these great dogs.

Also some Whippet lines can always look a bit on the lean side till they grow a bit more. I personally like all my pups well covered but not fat. I don't feed high protein foods either. I prefer to grow them slowly. But then I have a slow maturing lines.

She looks fine to me. Phewwwww....I was expecting to see a walking hat rack.
-
I would suggest you feed her minced chicken frames from Leonard's or a pet food store, along with a good quality dry food all mixed in together. And plenty of it. Start gradually with any new food till the dog is accepting it without any tummy upsets. See how that goes for a while. Has the dog been wormed recently, worms can also stop weight gain.

I for one say there is a huge difference between a Royal and the average dog show. How may paying public come through the turnstiles of a Royal everyday ?. How many of the public come to the average weekend dog show ?. Yes of course we are responsible for our own dogs but in this day and age we need better security than has been provided in the past. I just believe that a a dog stolen from behind a barrier and locked away proves that the security is not good enough. This can apply to all Royals where we and our dogs have direct contact with the public. At everyday Agricultural shows we have close contact with our dogs as we are usually sitting with them around the ring provided, and they our within our reach. Not always so at Royals.

Vaccinating At 16 Wks ........ Do You Or Dont You?

It's up to the individual what they do or believe is right. We all know some vets over service for the almighty dollar. All I can tell you is that I vaccinate a 8 weeks (a day or two either way isn't going to matter) Then a second after three months. I have no set date to do the second, it may be four months or more. I believe that vaccinating the pups effect ally has more to with the anti bodies passed onto the pups from the dam. The longer you wait the more effective the vaccine may be. I also believe that some bitches may be passing on antibodies long after they should be. I always make sure MY pups are not allowed to nurse from their dam after six weeks, just to help lower the chance that the bitch may be one of those that are still passing on antibodies. I got onto this many years ago after speaking to a sobbing lady at vets saying that all the puppies she bred had died. This was when we vaccinated at six weeks. She used a smart vet and they tested the bitches milk and proved that the bitch was still passing on anti bodies. The pups were a Toy breed and the all this happened at about nine weeks. Nobivac have a vaccine on the market that used at 10 weeks will override the maternal antibodies and no further vaccine needs to be used for life. Excluding the known yearly ones. Ten weeks is what I was told, it may even be earlier now as it is some time since I bred a litter. Why do I seek information all the time about vaccines...because I held my most beautiful girl while the vet HAD to PTS because of autoimmune disease because of over vaccination. This was at a the time it was the norm for us to vaccinate yearly. -
Wait a minute.....this is about security at Royal Shows not who said what to whom. So far it appears that the consensus is that we do not have enough security. This has been proven when a dog can be taken from where it was believed to be secure at Adelaide Royal. Remember this dog was behind a barrier and locked away. It has also been noted that one of the Royals is exempt from criticism. I believe that MAY be because it's security excludes the public. Congratulations Sydney Royal.

I know this must sound strange but even at this stage of her pregnancy I would seeking out a good Chiropractor. If there is something out it could cause a whelping problem.
-
These would be my thoughts on the matter to. Good luck.
-
Don't forget in this case it was the Public that stole Harry from behind a barrier out of area he was contained in. I am all for meet and greet areas for the Public should you wish to participate. Away from the main benching area. But after this incident I think Sydney Royal has got it right.

Yes. Don't forget the dog you are going to use may also be flea treated. My males and bitches are flea treated and and produce nice healthy pups.

Try Paws and Whiskers a very professional kennel run by professional dog people (breeders and showers) for dog people. http://www.pawsandwhiskers.com.au/ I would start looking now as December can a very busy time of the year.

Sorry, but this type of training is best left to the experts with legal access to the training essentials.

I don't know what to think then. Could it be because she is on her back. Give the belly a rub when she is standing up and see if you get a different reaction.

My Whippet show prospect cost $800. Breed prices vary a fair bit and not every breeder sells show and pet pups for different prices. I wasn't talking about my own breed. I realise that. I just wanted to convey the fact that not all "show dogs" are necessarily going to cost thousands. Yes I also agree with that. Most genuine breeder I find are fair in their pricing.
