  1. Espinay2, yes your quite right it may be one thing or a combination of many things. My mind keeps telling me just watch and wait and see what may happen with the imports from England now they have a similar protocol to the States. It may be an eyeopener for all of us. Along with many things, only time will tell. :)
  2. I have had my dogs on Ivomectin for all their lives and still siring at all ages. :) Anything is worth the thought and thank you espinay2 for yours, maybe it may be in some cases not all. A lot of the products for heartworm are ivomectin based. I also recall a dog in the states that went sterile and it was traced back to the heat of the water the dog was hydro bathed in. Smart repo vet worked it out. The dog did return to siring live litters. Again we have a thought where heat/rise in temparature was the culprit. By the way the dog was a heavily coated breed that was bathed in very hot water to stimulate the coat growth.
  3. Great choice - I love iggies too, obviously lol! I'm not a breeder and do not know much about iggy health issues other than epilepsy. Could you please tell me what PRA is. I thought you could explain it to me in plainer english than researching it online. Plus I'm lazy too  Maybe if I say night blindness would be the closest I could get to.
  4. I have bred Whippets for a long long time. Whippets are a very healthy breed, and yes their is no REQUIRED health tests. American Whippets seem be be having problems in THEIR lines, you would rarely if ever hear of AUSTRALIAN Whippets having a problem unless it it closely linked to American lines. Most American dogs coming into this country are heavily health tested and certified clear before leaving the states. This doesn't mean you WON'T EVER get problems but it's pretty unlikely. My thoughts are if purchase off ethical registered breeders you will lessen the chances of any problems. Purchasing off back yard breeders is asking for disaster especially if they are not vaccinating. I have lost sales and was happy to do so from people that refused to purchase unless I furnished the dogs health certificates. These people told me they went onto a dog list and were told to ask for the dogs health certificates and if the breeder didn't offer them they had bad stock. Some people just believe what they are told and don't do their home work and research their chosen breed. These type of owners I believe I do not need. Most American Whippets are tested for Heart, Sight and Hearing problems. If any breeder wants to test for these things then be my guest and go ahead. I would not be testing for these problems because my dogs have been running flat out for years and never dropped dead. They can hear the fridge open I swear a mile away  and nothing can move in the yard that they don't see it. Italian Greyhounds are now my chosen breed and they also have NO health testing available. They do suffer from PRA. Their is NO test available at this point in time but ethical caring breeders address the problem by having stock regularly eye tested and only purchasing from other breeders with tested stock. Testing can start at any age but usually you will find nothing till the dogs are approximately 3 to 5 years of age. Testing continues till the age of 7 and if nothing untoward is found they are given a certificate stating that the dog is clear. So after that lengthy discussion the persons were telling the truth but I would run a mile and never purchase of them.
  5. I think the age would depend on the country the pup is exported from, of course adding what our requirements are. The pups we saw from England were never rabies vaccinated until now.
  6. I wonder if we will see a rise in infertility in dogs leaving England now, because in the change of regulations. Maybe this would also be a good point to start. Although as ellz says maybe the rabies vaccine could have something to do with because of it's prolonged use in some parts of the States. Remember it's a thought not a statement. I have a feeling that it is an acculumination of too much too quick. Also just a thought. Of course it may just be a case of bad luck with the importers of these dogs. It also bothers me that the bitches we import still have pups, but as sugested are the litters smaller than usual. The only we may know as if the bitch had large litters before leaving and that then halved after arrival.
  7. Thanks for all the imput everyone, but what we are trying to find out is this.......why are normal healthy dogs siring litters then being prepared for export given all the vaccinations to leave their own country only to be suddenly found out to be sterile, either before they leave their country of departure or found to totally sterile upon arrival in this country. These are dogs of varying ages with no history of problems in the lines. I accept what all you have said is totally correct and factual and thank you all for your input. But, what we want to know is why are lots of dogs going sterile when the litter brothers that are not prepared for export staying fertile. What we are talking about is dogs going sterile during the export time never to be fertile again. Keep it coming people it can only help.
  8. Maybe in the bitch it may only destroy some where as in the male maybe it has a potential to destroy the workings ?. Yes a great discussion where we all may learn something about this problem. Lets face it it's a problem in some, not all. Maybe we should start to think about what breeds it has happened to and then see if there are breeds that have not been affected.
  9. Noooooooo, you isolate the dog from the children till you have a satisfactory answer to this problem. I don't want to read, BC attacks child in owners back yard. :)
  10. The vendors at Durack sell excellent crates. :)
  11. Asking about this over the weekend I was given this answer. Could it be that some dogs react with a higher temperature reaction to some vaccine. Now what we want is good reaction to the vaccine to create a good immunity. But, could this be a case of over reaction in temperature affecting the fertility especially where the vaccine is introduced twice ?.
  12. Yes, had an inkling that this may not be a "New" problem but a case of just didn't comunicate with one another as easily. Well, we established one thing, it is not a brand new problem.
  13. Both Rebanne. It just seems strange to me that after many years of dogs (males) being imported into Aust. we are hearing of "some" of the dogs being declared sterile by our vets. Has this always been happening ? or is it we just never heard about it, or is a new thing that is happening. Some of the males never arrive, either because they were sperm tested by ever vigilant purchasers or they have been used before leaving their original country and no puppies result, therefore alerting the owners to a possible problem. Firstly this is not a Witch Hunt!!!!. Just some enquiring minds that would like to see if it is a problem that could be avoided in the future. Could it be that so much vaccine that is given these days it is just simply compromising the dogs system ?. Could the brands of vaccine have anything to do with it. Could it be that the necessary vaccines are given to close together and then compromise the system. I have imported a bitch and a small one at that (Italian Greyhound) this bitch has received the same amount of vaccine as the largest dog is given. Yes, when she arrived at my home I would have said said that she was in a state stress and rightly so. All the vaccines and upheaval from her only known home then the flight here and added quarantine her little body was starting to take it's toll. Could this sterility be from stress in some cases ?. Well yes, it could be a factor, but what of the dogs that have never left their owners property being found sterile. Is this just males ?. Does anybody know of any bitches that have been found to be sterile after arrival. I repeat this NOT A WITCH HUNT. Their are some of us that would like to look into the matter further and see if we could come up with some helpful information that could be of help when importing dogs in the future.
  14. Sure sounds like it. immune mediated hemolytic anemia
  15. Granted, the OP was just driving past. There could have been anything in the cup. The OP said coffee in their post and they didnt also seem concerned that it COULD be coffee but instead that theres dog spit on th spoon. Regardless of what it was, the OP wasnt concerned that it could be coffee, and I was commenting as to thats what I would be worried about. It's her dog,and she can feed him/her whatever she wants. It's also not so much about dog spit either, although hygiene should play a part. The point is that as I said before, there are many non dog people out there and they would cringe at seeing what she was doing. It's hard enough trying to exercise dogs legally, off leash, (I know, many of you don't like this idea either) without having to have some nitwit add more fuel to the fire to the anti dog people. seems like there is a dog person or two who are cringing at the thought of having a dog being on it's owner's knee at an outdoor cafe, being fed something off a spoon. Lucky doggy enjoying a nice day out. I'd rather have a bit of dog spit on my spoon then people spit anyday. And no one knows what was really in the cup. +1
  16. May just have been a severe case of cramp.
  17. My bitches get wormed every 4 weeks as my heart worm medication also does for worms.
  18. So you would be happy to see the less popular pet breeds become extinct? To preserve the breed someone has to breed enough dogs to carry one a viable gene pool. With breeds that have very large litters of say 12 or more, what are you going to do with the puppies if no one will buy them as pets? In nature large numbers like that would never survive anyway. Culling puppies at birth is much more ethical than raising more puppies than you can find good homes for. Personally, I couldn't do it and I have a popular breed so it isn't an issue but I would never condemn those that love their chosen breed and feel they have no other option with the best interest of the future of that breed in mind.
  19. As far as we know BIG/R/UP in Group.

  22. There is a Championship Show on at Durack this Sunday 19th. It is the Toy Dog Club of Queensland Championship Show. Rings 14 15 and 16 have been allocated to the Toy Group. This is the rings you will find Cavs in. Cheers. Sorry, forgot it starts at 9.00 am.
  23. Last year conformation was 2133 with all the obedience/agility combined it was 2457. Now if my memory serves me right I think conformation this year may be 2051 I didn't check the total number of dog entered.
  24. Bernese were scheduled to be judged on the first day 9th Aug. If there are no results for the breed we are taking it that none were shown.
  25. I know of no "ethical" registered breeder that would offer any prospective purchaser a puppy at 6 weeks of age. Run a mile.
