  1. Skippy I'm a registered veterinary nurse. In answer to your questions, your bitch will still be attractive to male dogs and act like a bitch in season. In bitches the bladder doesn't hold up the uterus as dogs are on all fours not on two legs like people. Incontinence in spayed bitches is due to a lack of hormones not lack of support from the bladder. Not all speyed bitches get incontinence. An entire bitch or one with just her ovaries is more likely to get mammary tumours, with the incidence of this increasing after her third season. In my experience ( vet nursing for 20 yrs) I would not reccomend that a person only had a hysterectomy done on their bitch.
  2. Sorry for your loss. The is a hybrid tea rose called Grandmere Jenny, French for grand mother Jenny.
  3. Sounds like a yeast infection called malasezia (sp) and the drops used to clear this up were called surolan. Maybe ask your vet if this is a possible cause of your sibes problems.
  4. So sorry, Rusky. Big hugs from me, Tali and Tyra.
  5. Yes I've had that problem too. A hairdresser of mine suggested hanging your bra on the line BEFORE washing it and letting the hai blow out. I do this with the kids tee shirts after a hair cut too, seems to work.
  6. Kavik, try tying the dogs mouth shut with a piece of stocking or crepe bandage. Tie one knot over the top of its nose, then one under its nose and then pass the ends behind the head and tie. This is how I've had to muzzle some small dogs.
  7. I am not going to reccomend a vet as the one I use I often work at and I'm not a breeder (yet). I would just like to say that our vets are like our chosen breed of dog, we like/love all dogs but there are some breeds some of us just wouldn't have. A good vet is one that you feel comfortable with, one you feel does a good job and one that looks after our pets well. The thing is this is all based on our individual opinion, something we are all entitled to but something not everyone agrees with. People should listen to other peples opinions then form their own based on their observations. I am a registered vet nurse and have owned a vet clinic (with my ex), employed vets and worked for many. There have been some that I wouldn't let operate on my animals but other people were more than happy with them. I think Personalities can play a part in what we think makes a good person or a dodgy person. Derogitory statements should not be posted on a public forum, if you feel that strongly about someone/something perhaps a pm would be better. This shouldn't become a vet slagging off topic.
  8. Speak to your vet before your lab is due to be desexed. The soft palate surgeries I have seen performed have not seemed that painful, with most dogs eating soft foods the next morning. I believe some vets now use a laser to cut and cauterise the soft palate and that this has even quicker healing times. My mum got so used to our old lab snoring that when he had to be put to sleep (got cancer) mum couldn't sleep as the room was too quiet!!
  9. Did your vet suggest a blood transfusion? Did your vet suggest any dietary suppliments apart from the vit K tablets? Years ago we used to use feramo-d or blud(think thats how it was spelt) these were meant to help with anemia. I know things change in vet medicine and human medicine all the time but it may be worth checking. Hope your pooch gets well soon.
  10. So sorry for your loss Greymate. While I am yet to be owned by a greyhound I know from working with them that they are truly beautiful creatures. Run free and breathe east at the Rainbow Bridge, Sam.
  11. Hi Miss Whippy, I adopted a dominance aggressive rotti x a number of years ago. I took him to obediance school and after The first lesson on a choker collar I had a huge tension headache and blisters on my hand where he kept lunging at the other dogs.. I felt like giving up but got a gentle leader and it worked a treat. After about 12 to 18 mths I could work him on a choker collar and even of lead in class. I think with time, patience and lots of practice you can make the transition to a collar.
  12. My deepest sympathy to you and all your family (fur and skin) on the loss of Mia. I'm sure she had the very best life could have to offer living with you. What a wonderful legacy she has left behind, spanning 3 continents. Thinking of you at this sad time.
  13. So sorry for your loss. I lost my girl suddenly on Saturday. Take comfort in the fact she had a good life with you and that she didnt suffer. My girl died right after finishing her dinner ( she was a labrador ) so I couldnt think of a better way for her to go, Yours went after a walk in the park with her friends, doing something she loved. Its just such a shock for those they leave behind. Thinking of you.
  14. Last night my parents phoned me to say that "Folly" had died. The two dogs were fed as usual at 6pm. Mum got the washing in while they were eating, took the washing inside, went outside to pick up the empty bowls, Folly was lying down, Mum called dad. Dad thought Folly was asleep, a bit odd but when he looked closer she was dead. Folly was 7 1/2 yrs old, sterilised black lab. She had not been sick, had been to the vets last week for a lump to be checked, it was a lypoma. She was not bloated, no foam around her mouth or any other outward signs. What could have caused this in this young, fit, beautiful girl? Its hard to loose a friend when you know they are sick or old but to loose one so unexpectedly is such a shock. Folly was born 30/06/1998. I got her when she was 8 weeks old. Together we started obedience, getting our CD after 5 trials and started agility after she was a year old. My marriage broke up and she went to live with my mum and dad, I still saw her every day. I love you Fol, See you at the Rainbow Bridge. RIP Gunnislake Wild Winsome CD, Folly, 30/06/1998-28/01/2006.
  15. I have a single tank hydrobath (hooked up to hot and cold water) I wash first dog with shampoo, empty tank, refill with clean water and rinse first dog. I then wash second dog withshampoo and first dogs rinse water, empty bath, refill and rinse second dog in clean water. I have two dogs and my parents have two dogs as well so I just repeat this procedure. I would use clean wash and rinse water if any of the dogs had skin problems etc.
  16. Sorry I was going on my experience as a dog owner and vet nurse (registered), not all dogs "attack" thier bums when their anal glands are full. Just ask your vet to ckeck them next time you take the dog in for anything. I'm sure the vet will do it for you and explain how its done.
  17. Sometimes when the dogs anal glands are full the dogs breath can really smell (because the dog licks its bum), so it might pay to express the anal glands. If they are full empty them each week for a couple of weeks, then just do them fortnightly or monthly.
  18. that was truly beautiful. I dont know you or your dog but I' typing this with tears streaming down my face. So sorry for your loss.
  19. sounded a bit like distemper symptoms to me. But I must admit that in 20yrs of vet nursing I've never seen a case.
