  1. Hi Jed, Aquadent is a product containing chlorhexidine (I think, going from memory here). Its formulated for use in animals, you add a certain amount to their drinking water daily and it helps with tooth problems ( tat tar build up), bad breath and coincidentally lip fold dermatitis according to some people.
  2. A client I know with a cavalier with lip fold dermatitis tried aquadent in the water as the last step before surgery. She is thrilled with the results and isnt going to have surgery for now.
  3. Y es just like Ruffcat said, Hills BF or BD (brain food or brain diet). A few clients at work ( a vet clinic ) have their dogs on Vivitonon, this is a medication and you would need to see your vet. I've heard good reports on both of these products and they can be used together or by themselves.
  4. It can be normal. Although bigger blood vessels are cauterised or tied off, when closing the skin layer a blood vessel in the skin it punctured. At the vets I work at we either just apply some pressure or place a small dressing over the incision site. We use a gauze swab or piece of melonin and some fixamol to hold it in place. This can stay on for 24 hrs if its clean and dry. I would only be concerned if the scrotum/sac was filling or the ooze continued. If this happened then I would take the dog to the vets to be seen. Hope this helps.
  5. As Crisovar said its exactly the same drug/ingredient. I think the patent has expired on Metacam and other drug manufacturers can now release their version of metacam. Just like Nurofen or Herron Ibuprofen, Panadol or Herron Paracetamol. Hope this makes sense.
  6. My vet said that it was ok to use the equine jointguard on my dogs but I will double check with her after reading your post, thanks.
  7. I get the Nature vet Equine Jointguard. My 2 dogs (32 and 34 kg) get 2 x level scoops(about 10grms). I get it cost from the vets I work at. It might pay to check out the equine version and compare the prices to how much you'd need to give your dogs.
  8. The vets I work at give a long acting pain killer injection at the time of the premed, so that it has started working by the time the anaesthetic wears off. Some times the dogs might require pain relief tablet but certainly this is not the rule. In regards to the vomitting I would call your vet/a vet as the dog will have been fasted prior to surgery and isn't able to keep fluids down. I would be concerned with dehydration and the strain that retching is putting on the surgical site/internal and external sutures. I think at the very least your dog needs an injection to stop the vomitting, possibly more pain relief and some fluids ( even if they're given under the skin and not intraveneously ).
  9. Could you swim your girl for exercise as there would be no weight on her elbow. Perhaps swim her for 5 minutes instead of walking for 10 minutes. I would also alternate with hot and cold compresses.and even massage the leg and elbow to encourage good circulation. Good luck with your girl.
  10. Have you and your vet thought/talked about the possibility of doing a biopsy/biopsies and having them looked at by a laboratory (eg vetpath is the one here in W.A.)
  11. If wounds are not stitched up quickly the edges dry/die and would then need to be cut back to healthy/viable tisue. This means the wounds are in affect made larger and sometime extra care is needed as the wound ( depending on where it is ) is placed under more tension. Sometimes with dog fight wounds its better not to stitch them straight away as the tissue can be more damaged than first appears, some wounds require a couple of surgeries as tissues die off.
  12. Has your dog been checked for demodectic mite. This can be a problem in some bulldogs and drugs like prednil ( a cortisone and anti histamine Combination) can make demodex worse. A vet would need to do a skin scraping to check for the mites.
  13. barly, condolenses on the loss of you cav. I'm sure you had the dogs best intrests at heart and made a difficult desision, putting the dog before yourself. If you've been using this vet fir so long then he/she would know you and your dog/s and be in a good position to advise you accordingly.
  14. Thanks everyone. She is booked in on Monday to have her elbows re xrayed to see if there are any change going on. In regards to Ester C all the literature I have read just says vit c and she was on this as per the breeders instructions from when I got her. All the breeders dogs are on it, including my girls parents.
  15. Thanks for the replies. I had Tali on vit C as reccommended by the breeders until she was 18mths old, have read some inreresting articles on vit C and hip dysplasia.
  16. Hi all. I have a curly coated retriever, 2yrs and 2 mths old, 34 kg, sterilised female. I had her hips and elbows scored just after she turned 12 mths old, hips total score 41, elbows 0/0. I finished her aust champ title and sterilised her. She has had cartrophen course and boosters in the past, shes on omega magic and sashas blend. Recently I noticed that her front legs were bowing out ( picture and old barrel chested bull terrier walking, elbows out). My vets re xrayed her hips and they are much worse and the vets feel that this is causing her front leg problems. They put her on tramal 300mg twice daily and this has eased the problem a bit. I asked about removing her femoral head (one side at a time) and they have said that this probably wont help much . Do any of you have any advice, or care to tell me what you think. I love my dog very much but dont want to see her uncomfortable for the rest of her days, to be truthful I'm seriously thinking of putting her down. It just concerns me that shes only just gone 2 yrs of age and her hips are already affecting her front legs, dogs carry 60% of their weight on their front legs. My girl has never jumped up on people (even as a pup), is always slow to move about and really sways her bum when she walks. I'm sorry for the long post, I hope it makes sense. Please let me know what you think. Thanks in advance.
  17. Side effects of carprofen(rimadyl) can include loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, blood in faeces/diarrhoea and lethagy.
  18. Thanks for the replies. I've sent a pm to colin/nicestman77.
  19. Thanks for the link BC, will have a look.
  20. Hi all, Can anyone tell me where in Australia I can get blades for an aesculap favorita ll clipper. I'm in WA but am happy to buy from anywhere in Australia.
  21. Nicolea Paull is a vet and does chiro on animals. She's at booragoon vets, I think Toni Cockburn is also a vet and she does accupuncture, she's at Wattle Grove Vets. I've worked with both these vets and both are very nice.
  22. With my dads pup she was fairly feral the first time in the hydrobath. The second time I let her watch the 4 other family dogs get washed, then I put her in with dads old labrador. The lab is so calm and still in the bath that the pup soon realised it wasn't so bad. The pup has got better and better each time I wash her.
  23. Try and pm Iluvflatcoats. Her dog Grover has had the surgery, I'm sure she"ll help, shes lovely.
  24. Hip dysplasia is hereditary, its poly genetic and can be made worse by environmental factors. Non of the vets I've worked with (20 yrs vet nursing) have ever said it can be just environmental. Get your second opinion done then approach the breeder. Best of luck, I hope your breeder is more helpful than the breeder of my curly coated retriever, bought as a show dog, obedience and agility prospect, and has a hip score totaling 41.
  25. You should also treat the environment as the dogs will keep picking more up if you dont.
