Beat you to it. Miles is whelping now. 2 girls so far and more to come. She wasn't due until 30th June! Another girl just arrived.

Ellz please don't take offence, I was only giving my opinion as a good friend of Raja and knowing Ochre who is the same lines as mine. The thing is with Basenjis they aren't a normal canine
-
I don't take temperatures and have touch wood never had a problem with a bitch whelping. Raja's pups are not due yet so I wouldn't be panicking but I think she will be now after reading this thread. I regularly feel the belly to check for movement of the pups and if they are kicking and mum is acting completely normal then I wouldn't be going to the vet prior to the due date. Is your thermometer a digital one Raja?

Raja, I never use oxytocin. I just give my girl a nice drink of milk mid whelping.

Great thanks for the replies.

I've got the vet bedding for the first time and want to wash it. I went to put it in with other bedding but stopped wondering if it would put fluff all over the other blankets. Can you post your experience with the vet bedding. Should it be washed separatley or is it okay to go in with other stuff? Its the vet bedding from the UK advertised on here by Peperone. Thanks in advance.

I've never had roll bars in and never a problem.. Basenjis being a light breed aren't squashers. The pups are very robust. You can temporarily put something to block off the door area so the pups don't fall out but the pups usually stick very close to mum and she normally will curl around them to protect them and keep them warm. Only picked at breakfast wow... my girls are right pigs and never go off their food for anything even whelping!! Try not to be nervous Basenjis are easy whelpers and fantastic mums.

If you have had a dog that is a severe puller can you let me know which type of collar worked best to stop the pulling. Thanks.

Chronic Ligamentitis In The Stifle Of A Dog.
Chocolate replied to Whipitgood's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hi Whipitgood, A pup that went to a pet home was playing with another dog and hurt his patella pretty bad. It was xrayed and showed that the cartlidge had shifted. He was limping pretty bad for over a week but it is coming right now. He was going to a specialist but won't bother now. Whippets are so accident prone aren't they. -
The ultrasounds aren't too reliable on numbers hey! I would expect her to go early carrying 6. My girl had hers 4 days early - I went to bed and she snuggled up next to my legs and contracted straight away. Lights went back on and by 3pm in the morning I had 5 beautiful babies. Luckily she was happy to use the whelping box in the walk in robe and not the bed. All the best.

Congratulations Newfiesrus, that is quite a story! Did they ultrasound or blood test at day 35 out of interest.

Liver Problems, Advice Needed Pls
Chocolate replied to Her Majesty Dogmad's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
A friend of mine has an elderly dog going through a very similar thing to yours. She has blood in her poos and was vomiting up her food. The vet said it is the liver. My friend was going away on hols and didn't expect her to make it more than a few day but they put her on regular small meals and and she's made a real come back enjoying her food and walks again. It is a matter of time but they can rally even when you think they are at deaths door. -
Hi, I'm interested to know what age other breeder's begin to put collars on their puppies.

Try this company it is a lot cheaper than animal network. http://www.animalsdna.com/

Bear in mind that if they are going to the effort of looking for her then she means a lot to them. Her timidness may be due to her personalty whatever home she lives in.

So sorry for your losses Monteba. It is so sad losing babies one after the other. My only suggestions are to ensure they are warm so that they are able to digest their mothers milk and speak with your vet in case they can pinpoint why this might be happening.
-
I can't remember where no but I read that you shouldn't give pregnant bitches fish oil because they shouldn't get too much Vitamin C. Anyone know anything about this?
-
Hi Dbug, I purchased two large bags and put all of my dogs on it and their poos became very soft, distinctly smelly and this never changed even after getting through both bags after a few weeks. My feeling was that it was just too much protien and the dogs need some kind of carbs in their diet.

There is Tuckertime rolls and Tuckertime Maintenance Biscuits. The rolls were very popular at the vet because of the added gut flora and because it is very appealing for the dog to eat as it's like sausage. Tuckertime themselves have done a lot of research on getting the recipe right to improve good gut bacteria. They now have these ingredients added into the biscuits also. It is a great food for a doggy feeling unwell and off it's food or for fussy eaters. I personally think the rolls are best suited to small dogs. I wouldn't feed either product as a permanent food for my own dogs but now and then as a change they love it. It's downed in a flash.

If it does turn out to be Fanconi then their is a protocol to replace lost electrolytes etc which can often allow a dog to continue to live a normal life. How well it works for the individual dog is variable but can give many additional years for some. Best of luck.
-
Thanks Persephone. She gets plenty of exercise in the day and so it's night time in bed that's the problem when all is still and quiet. If I stroke her she loves it but I can't stroke her all night to destract her, I need the sleep!

Take a look at Fanconi.

Hi T-Time, No not my breed they have smooth hairless bellies to begin with as they are very fine coated dogs. The girls seem to start the belly licking/nibbling about the time that the pups begin to become a bit active. It's kinda of like all that activity makes them uncomfortable, I suppose the skin is getting tighter around the belly. Thanks for the idea though.

Thank you Hunterhound and Cordelia - some good suggestions here:-) Thankyou!

Uh.. I don't think so... as I said in my OP she is due to whelp the END of the month so no milk yet for sure!!
