Wow I'm horrified, what a terrible thing to happen. So very hard to tell size going on your pics but then you said football size and my jaw fell open. Best wishes GG for Beau's surgery and a continued speedy recovery.

Allergy Dogs - Atopica Tablets
peigirl replied to equinemad2's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Agree 100%. The drug is an immune suppressant and not something I would use unless as a last resort. Likewise. EM2 what allergies does Zoe have and how did they/do they manifest? What other treatment forms have you tried? Does she have any side effects from it? I'm quite curious as I know lots of people with allergy dogs but no one who actually uses atopica. -

What breed is Zoe and how old is she? -
Indigirl so very sorry for your loss, what a terrible accident My barely 15 week old pei pup had a collision at the local park this morning with some play equipment and clean knocked out 4 teeth. All I could think of was your little man and how lucky she was in comparision. Hugs to you.

Intradermal Skin Testing
peigirl replied to First Time Puppy Owner's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Nearly 2 years since I had it done but at the time the basic panel (60ish substances) and immunotherapy program cost me ~$900. I was advised the withholding period for antihistamines was preferrably 2 weeks but Raf only had a week off his antihistamines before I tested. His readings were still off the scale so I don't think there was any masking. -
S&T what's the protein base in that kibble you're referring to out of curiosity? Can't find an ingredient list on the RC site. FTPO remember it's always baby steps with allergy dogs. One thing at a time and you will (eventually) find a workable solution!! By the way, the only time the statue is still is when there is food in front of her nose! lol
-
FTPO in your case if it is definitely atopia I don't think the prescription diets would make any difference (and I take it you mean for eg. EP Duck & Oatmeal). As long as you are supplementing with essential fatty acids (fish oil tablets + evening primrose oil) diet should be fine. EPO baths may offer some relief too. Personally I would keep him on the same diet for now that way when you start the antihistamines you know with certainty that introducing those has affected a change. No doubt they will! When you've figured out a good dose for him that he does well on then look at adjusting his diet. Avoid changing too many variables at once.

My boy has medically diagnosed (endosocopy, colonoscopy) eosinophilic IBD. Orijen might be grain free but its also a mix of a like 4 or 5 proteins all of which he is intolerant too. I've managed his IBD for 2 years since diagnosis with a home made roo, zucchini, carrot and yogurt diet. He also gets extra probiotics daily as well as antihistamines for his atopic allergies. Any flare ups are treated with Metrogyl.

Hi SD I have a boy with IBD and have been managing for 2 years without medication. Would be happy to answer questions but I'm off interstate for work tomorrow for a few days. PM me some questions if you like and I'll reply when I get back.

That's want I want to avoid. Unfortunately its not something you get to choose. To be honest I just think its fantastic I can keep him stable on antihistamines and don't have to touch steriods.
-
You're right they can develop a tolerance to antihistamines but better those than steriods! My boy gets 2 claratyne everyday of the year for his allergies.
-
My boy gets winter nose too over the cooler months. Summer is coming so the pigment will soon be back to normal. I wouldnt think its anything to concern yourself with.

Ooooo that sounds great TSD, that's exactly the type of chiro I was/am looking for. Unfortunately the one I saw was quite rough, made sudden movements that scared him (and dare I say hurt too) and got my boy agitated. Then I got sent out of the room for her to finish treatment because I was apparently influencing his behaviour and she did god knows what and he snapped at her and connected. I should have stopped the treatment before that happened. Hindsight is a wonderful thing Now I'm very hesitant to use it again.
-
Yes also inclined to agree the pain caused him to snap. But I was also not impressed with the person treating him. Coincidentlty he has his regular Bowen appt this Saturday so hopefully that offers some relief. I'm also considering maybe acupuncture?? Tend to agree chiro is very rough.
-
My boy has roached his back somehow within the last day and I can see at least one vertebrate out of alignment in the mid section of his back. Do I have any options other than chiro? I would like to avoid it if possible. He has had it previously and I'm not sure if it was the handling of the person or the actual procedure that caused him to snap at the person manipulating him. Any suggestions welcome.

Yep I use Malaseb at that ratio. Works a treat

Kyra just saw this thread Here's hoping for good news from the ultasound today (((hugs)))
-
A Bowen therapist would do your boy the world of good. Sorry am on the wrong side of Oz to make a recommendation!
-
Wow, how awesome! Who is this through???
-
Interesting thread, I'm not a fan of the mixed protein kibbles but would be interested to try the 6 fish formula when available.

Update On Gsd Allergies - Desensitizing Vaccine
peigirl replied to firedrop's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Good luck with the desentisting. Unfortunately it made my boy too ill even on tiny doses and I had to stop his treatment before I even really started. He has claratyne everyday to manage his allergies. Here's a link (post 16) to everything he reacts to. -

No don't keep on with the prednisolone Maiko, Clare needs to see your girl's full condition. Think long term, you'll have a workable solution for her soon. -

All dogs and antihistamines react differently. Polaramine (pink and red) does absolutely nothing for my boy so he gets two Claratyne everyday. He's about 23kg. Unless you've been advised otherwise Maiko normal procedure is to take your dog off all inhibitors like antihistamines before you see a specialist - that way they are seeing a true representation of the problem. You only have to wait til Saturday so I wouldn't suggest you give any antihistamines before you visit. No baths either.
