Sounds like he is reacting to one of the foods - expressing a food intolerance. Softening biscuits won't make a difference to bowel motions. You need to stop all the treats and put him on a bland diet. Hop online later.

You should be grateful he pees like a girl (well some girls). Rafael learned to cock his leg after 3 hours of hanging out with my friends dogs. I was not impressed He's funny actually, cocks his leg at the park and on walks but mostly at home squats or just lifts one paw up because there are no other doggy scents to cover. He is nearly 2 and still has terrible aim :p

Licking Stiches. [update With Pic]
peigirl replied to Just Midol's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hope he is ok. You can always get a bigger elizabethan collar too. Rafael was desexed about a month ago - he had a 25cm collar on. 20cm wasn't enough, he could still contort himself to get to his stitches. -
Sheesh :D I havent bought them in ages as I've been doing homecooking, plus my boy has been on an elimation diet. Looks like it may have to stay that way.
-
www.vetproductsdirect.com and www.aussiepet.com.au :D Depends what I'm buying as to where I go.
-
I found exactly the same thing with my vet too so I buy shampoos, flea treatments, wormers, ear cleaners etc all online.

Dan the Permoxin is very strong. I didn't see any insects or bugs around in the yard for a few weeks after I sprayed it, and I only did about 3 applications. I will add neem oil to my shopping list. The less chemicals round here the better. Poor Asher! He is amazingly sensitive Raf will only vomit (with what gets ingested) or sneeze - specially with car fumes or if I use any 'fumey' cleaning products around the house. Thanks for the link to Owen's, I will check that out. No rush whenever you send that info thru. We are holding steady at this end - I can't even see his ribs poking out any more! Tash

Hi Dan, no I don't normally have a problem with fleas. Raf picked up about a dozen adult size fleas from somewhere - I can only presume from another dog we met on our walk? :D Murdoch Derms recommended a twice daily spray of Permoxin as maintenance together with normal monthly flea control. Because he's so sensitive the constant chemcials were too much and only contributed to vomitting so the Permoxin stopped after a few weeks. Raf's a chucker. Anything that doesnt agree with him (say chewing on a stick ) will ensure a vomit first thing the following morning. When he got the fleas he I applied the Permoxin again for about a week - and all round the house and garden, plus Advantage, plus a bath with EctoSoothe. He was fine after that, no problems since. Am I reading your post right, do you not use a flea treatment on Asher at all? I must admit Raf never a gets one with any regularity but because he allergic to fleas, moths, flys, ants etc I just feel obliged to give him one now and again. To be honest I don't even notice a difference when he is with or without?

Jaime this is what your after - Permoxin. Normal pet supply store should sell it, failing that you can buy online. I would keep your child away from your girl while you are spraying it on. It won't take long to dry quickly on your girls coat. It does have a slight 'chemical' smell but I wasn't able to smell it on my hands when I patted my boy afterward. Goodluck
-
Jaime you could try Permoxin. Make up a diluted mixture in a spray bottle and spray on your girl twice a day. My boy Rafael is extremely allergic to fleas as diagnosed thru intradermal skin testing and this is what the Dermatologist recommended for him. You can also spray the same mix on her bedding, your carpets and garden. My boy picked up a couple of fleas from somewhere and the Permoxin combined with his Advantage got rid of everything in about 5 days. No further problems since either. The Capstar tablet you gave your girl should kill the fleas on her quick smart but you will also need to treat the environment too.

Sags that is my absolute biggest whinge ever - all the 'mystery' animal fats. The one thing I just don't get is the supposedly novel kibbles for dogs with food intolerances. Why go to the trouble to make a kibble with novel protein and carbohydrate and then make the 3rd or 4th ingredient chicken or pork? Its soooo frustrating

Hi Julie The 3 types of Omega 3s are ALA, EPA and DHA. ALA is found in flax. The body converts ALA to EPA to DHA but only a very small amount is converted. You would be best to give an EPA and DHA supplement directly ie, fish oil or sardines. Fish oil capsules like you buy the EPO will be fine if you dont want to feed sardines regularly. You will be fine to start with a 2mg polaramine dose. Try one a day to start with, half in morning, half in the evening. 2mg is a very low does and may have no affect. Is so try 1 whole tablet in the morning and 1 whole in the evening. If still no affect try the stronger polaramine or a different brand. Antihistamines work differently in dogs as opposed to people - often they need more than us for the same result. I have a thread going in health at the moment called 'Atopic Dermatitis'. Zayda_asher makes some good suggestions with remedies for an itchy dog. Good luck Tash ETA to add link

Dan you're an as always. Thank you for all the info. I will PM you. Big loves to Zayda and Asher

Welcome

Hi 4 Paws Sounds like a contact allergy if its just on your girl's belly. By all means try the polaramine. Do you have the 2mg or 6mg tablets? I use the claratyne for my boy it is stronger than the polaramine and the active ingredient is 10mg. If you can get away with a lower strength dose, do so. Fatty acids are normally used to assist in keeping allergies at bay. A combination of your omega 3&6 fatty acids are normally used so you would need to consider a fish oil supplement in conjunction with EP oil

Garlic Used As Natural Flea Repellent...
peigirl replied to O-Ren's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
No garlic, no fleas and Advantage every 4-6 weeks when I remember. -
Erica Williams 9447 0608, [email protected]. Cost is $17.50 per roll (or was last time I bought them anyway). You will need to pick them up from her house in Duncraig/Carine. Alternatively I think she has a partner who distributes them from around Guildford way

Faolmor thanks for your reply. It's great to hear you can keep your boys atopy in check with diet. Rafael also has food intolerances. That’s a whole other, very long story To make it brief he has been on an elimination diet for the past 8-9 months (the last 5 of which have been on a roo and vege diet). He is mostly stable on this diet but when the atopic allergies flare, it upsets his gut and bowel and everything just goes straight through him. He eats a ridiculous amount of food each day and he is still super skinny. Magnum, I will look into Atopica. Thank you.

As some of you may know Rafael has been thru the ringer in the past 8 months with atopic allergies and food intolerances. His atopic allergies are quite severe (as diagnosed with intradermal skin testing) and he is allergic to almost every grass, weed and tree pollen you can imagine. He is so sensitive in fact he can not tolerate the immunotherapy to gradually increase his resistance to these allergies Currently I have been controlling his atopic allergies with claratyne – one tablet morning and night as I am avoiding cortisone unless absolutely necessary. This dosage has been built up over a period of time. Rafael’s atopic dermatitis primarily manifests as very waxy ears which require constant cleaning. He has perfect skin and coat. I was curious to know how other people manage very strong atopic dermatitis without cortisone, particularly at this time of year when all the pollens are in overdrive. Rafael unfortunately is slowly developing a resistance to claratyne so I am needing to look at other options.

Kitakins I totally empathise. Rafael is 18 months. I have been on elimination diets with him since he was 11 months old. He is currently on a roo, carrot, zucchini and cottage cheese diet, which while its not perfect, works far better than any else he's been on over the last 7ish months. He is definitely intolerant to chicken and turkey. I am also highly suspicious of lamb. I'm also yet to rule out beef or pork. Like you I know immediately if something is not agreeing with Rafael. I trialed a new kibble last week. Three days later he had the runs again Just go with your gut feeling about what works best. If you are getting no where with your vet, ask for a referral to Murdoch, the dermatology centre will put you on the right path. The consults are more expensive but at least you'll feel like youre getting somewhere. If they wont give you the referral go to the normal clinic at Murdoch and ask there for a referral to dermatology. If you do use Clare Middle I would be interested to know how you go. I've read some interesting articles on her.

That's something the Jackass guys would do. Bit disturbing I thought.

Canine Massage - a complete reference manual by Jean-Pierre Hourdebaigt. Lots of photos and illustrations. I would also recommend Bowen Therapy. I have taken my boy half a dozen times for Bowen, it does wonders for him and he loves it.

Bikle there used to be a place in Canning Vale called CC Enterprise that did mail order for alot of brands. Eagle Pack is one I knew they carried.
