Hmmmm, I'm not sure about the supermarket? Definitely chemist/health food/online pharmacy. Online pharmacies often have great deals on vitamins, supplements etc, especially if you grab a few containers at once.

Sources of GLA: - evening primrose oil - black currant oil - borage oil Up to you what you choose to use - dog dermatologists suggest EPO. Borage oil has twice the potency of EPO so if youre giving two caps of EPO a day, economise and use one of borage instead.

Hi Stitch, can you please tell me where you get this from? Just did a quick google, is this a horse product?

Generally these 3-6-9 supplements have only plant based Omegas: 3= flax, 6= evening primrose oil, 9= filler stuff/nothing of benefit. Flax oil is great for heart health. Body also metabolises a small % to EPA/DHA. Widely disputed what this % is in humans, no idea for animals. EPO is great for coat condition/skin. Omega 9 requires no supplementation whatsoever - the body metabolises these from others 'fats' consumed in the diet. There is no EPA/DHA in these mixes. Just buy a EPO supplement and be done with it.

Yes, yes and yes. Pretty much same application for humans and dogs. DHA used more for brain function, mood disorders etc. EPA known for heart health and anti-inflammation in joints etc. Neither of these are used for coat - you want GLA (gamma linolenic acid) which is found in evening primrose oil or borage oil (borage oil is far more potent that epo). GLA is part of the Omega 6 family. Don't add to BARF when you make, add it when you feed it. Oils will oxidise, go rancid, taste horrid and be of no benefit. I think the normal ratio to work off is 1 capsule per 20kg of body weight. Too much oil and the dog will probably end up with the runs, thats about it. I think it was me Midol, I am always banging on about fatty acids EPA/DHA won't do anything for the coat shine but its a good supplement to add for overall health if youre not treating joint problems. Use a GLA supplement for coat. Up to you really but dermatologists recommend the standard 180/120 fish oil + evening primrose when treating dogs with skin problems, allergies and/or elimination diets.

Laffi for skin conditions the dermatologists normally recommend EPA & DHA plus GLA - so thats fish or salmon plus evening primrose or borage oil. I'm not familiar with neem oil but 'OD-ing' can occur with cod liver oil due to high vitamin A content.

Super Mild Kennel Cough Strain
peigirl replied to sandgrubber's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I am in the northern suburbs around Joondalup. One of my neigbours dogs picked up KC end of last week. His other dog apparently has it now too. Saw them briefly yesterday and apparently the dog who came down with it first (on Friday nite) is already much better. What's a 'normal' KC lifecycle SG? -
I'm so sorry for your loss SG

DHA is really whats of benefit, rather than the EPA so then yes the green lipped mussel would be good. Cod liver oil contains vitamin A, regular fish oil supplements do not. 'Overdosing' fish oils will give a dog the runs, thats about it. Fish oil is normally supplemented with vitamin E as fish oil easily oxidises - its used as a perservative. Flax oil contains natural antioxidants to perserve it.

Bees Pollen Following Hair Analysis
peigirl replied to Ptolomy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I would also be concerned about risk of allergic reaction. They plaster huge warnings on bee pollen for people. A little bit of bee pollen for my dog would most certainly cause a massive reaction for him as he is highly allergic (not anaphylactic thank dog) to bees/wasps. -
Possibly Midol. The higher the ratio of EPA & DHA per dose, the lesser 'filler' oils and the more beneficial the supplement. What's the the EPA/DHA ratio for green lipped mussel? Standard EPA/DHA ratio is 180/120 but there are several available now which have higher ratio's than that.

You can't make a direct comparison between fish and flax, it’s like comparing apples with oranges. Its dependent on what you are hoping to achieve by supplementing. There are 3 types of Omega 3 - ALA, EPA & DHA. ALA = flax EPA & DHA = fish In humans ALA is very beneficial for heart health. Body also converts a small % of ALA to EPA and DHA. EPA & DHA is used also for brain function, mobility, anti-inflammation, mood disorders and also heart health. Also 3 types of Omega 6 - LA, GLA & AA. LA = wouldn’t supplement, occurs in fatty foods GLA = evening primrose or borage oils AA = wouldn’t supplement, too much is not good for the body GLA also has mobility and anti-inflammation properties. Also good for skin conditions. Dogs with skin conditions are normally given an EPA & DHA + GLA supplement by dermatologists. Dogs with mobility issues I know vets normally treat with EPA & DHA but a GLA supplement would certainly be of benefit to them too.

Hi Alyzoe This topic has come up a few times but I'm not sure anyone here has their dogs on atopica. You might like to PM Rappie who is a vet and may be able to offer some advice. Best of luck

CL atopic & contact allergies/food intolerances normally develop around the age of 12 months but several Dolers have had their dogs present problems well before that age. Pollen season has gone into overdrive at the moment. If she's itchy it could be a contact or atopic allergy. Start with a mild antihistamine every and see if helps. Antihistamines work differently for every dog. You might have to try a few different ones before you find one that works best. In regards to the elimination diet you could try roo. People grade cuts available at most supermarkets these days, and not just mince. You can also get roo tails for calcium. You have to try one thing at a time tho otherwise you'll never know what is effecting what - dont introduce antihistamines or change protein source at the same time.

Sorry This One Is Yuck But I Need Advice
peigirl replied to chloebear's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Youre feeding a huge variety of food. Something in that mix could be setting her off. 4 poos a day sounds too much for a puppy. Do an elimination and go back to basics, reintroducing foods one by one. -

Frothy Bile In The Morning...
peigirl replied to Gomez the Norfolk's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Does Gomez have atopic allergies out of curiosity? My boy has atopic dermatits, inflammatory bowel disease and food intolerances. I can control his problems most of the year through diet and antihistamines but when the pollen season goes into overdrive he will vomit a yellow sticky bile first thing in the morning just after he wakes up. Poos also change consistency. -
Sheridan I think the drowsiness depends on the dog's individual reaction.
