We have recently added to our family a rehomed 9 month old stafford called Molly She was an outside dog and was not toilet trained and not much other training, she knew sit and that's about it Well at obedience over the last couple of weeks she has gone up a level every class as she is so quick to learn And tonight she waited for me to say ok so she could eat her dinner without me holding her back THEN she ran out the doggy door to go to the toilet I'm so proud of her right now so i thought I would share

Casually Walking Your Dog
shoemonster replied to Purple Julie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I've been walking my 2 on a double lead and as long as they stay off to the left most of the time, they can be slightly in front as the 3 of us don't fit most of the time!!!, they must always sit when I stop and they are not to pull As they are still young they still pull at other dogs but are pretty good when passing people unless the person talks to them! When I get to the grassy park stretch of our walk I tell them they can relax and I give them a completely loose lead and they can sniff and whatever they like, though I still don't let them pull -

I'm with the crazy one, Southern is ace! Oh and they do wed nights and the grounds are open 24/7 -
Thanks guys, Buster and his brother are/were my first boys and such big boofers, they really do take a place in your heart with their cheeky ways and their girly squeals
-
I agree, it's ok to cry and it's ok to hurt, it's not been very long, and the pain will get less as time goes on, but that does not ever mean that you don't miss her just as much The one thing that helps me is to think that though it may be a short life to us, to them it is a full life, and a happy life with you

I'm really new to obedience but the way I see it, once you get past a certain stage of obedience you are doing it for the challenge of it, as a hobby, or a sport This could be considered selfish as there is really nothing in it for the dog, but I think that alot of the dogs are just happy to please their handler so is doing them no harm As for the pet dog training, the people who only want to be there for the day to day stuff will do their classes up to trialling and be happy with stopping there And forgive me if I've missed the point!!! lol

We are going thorugh toilet training at the moment with a 9 month old pup who was outside her whole life She has no concept of house training We were taking her out every half hour til she understood the word toilet and that it meant she was meant to go (no playing or qanything outside til she went, sometimes on lead if she was being silly) Now she has started to take herself out sometimes - doggy door and only has accidents when she has been playing alot so we just have to keep an eye on her when she is in and make sure we are still taking her out She is outside during the day when we are at work There are some good points in Kojak's post in puppy probs too that might help http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=60829

Thanks GB, it's getting hard as they are all getting older now and we are losing them one by one Last night when we got home I checked on him and he was asleep on the bed downstairs with the 4 girls all curled up around him, and within 1/2 hour he had gone It's really weird, as my two girls that I lost late last year both went within 1/2 hour of me getting home too, like they were waiting for me, gorgeous girls
-
Sorry if it's not meant for here, cos he wasn't a doggie but I lost my big boofy boy ratty Buster last night He was coming up to his 2nd birthday Had had a good life, and his highest achievement in life was stuffing 4 or 5 yoghurt drops in his mouth and then coming back to me with mouth stuffed full prettending he didn't have any and that he was a starving ratlet who needed a treat Oh mum you must have missed my mouth the first 5 times, how bout one now???!!! He was a cheeky boy Sorry it's a bit big, but then again - he was a big boy!

1st Night 10mth Old Gsp Did Not Stop Barking Helpppp
shoemonster replied to olegna17's topic in Puppy Chat
Yeah it's pretty normal for a pup in a new place, it's all new and weird and they don't know where you've gone Have you thought about crating her? Then you could have her in the bedroom til she settles in and gradually move her back -

Where was she sleeping? -
Yup, and puppy teeth are pure evil, they kill! It is hard but persevere and once he's through teething you will have forgotten all about it

There's a thread on bark on command in the training section Here it is!!! http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=9497

Close hands into a fist and turn away, no eye contact and don't tell him off til he is all 4 paws on the ground then praise! It's hard but it worked for us Oh and no treats after a snap, only treats if he's gentle He will get it pretty quickly if you don't give in Eddie was shocking for that and pulling on our pants when he was that age

Can You Teach An Old Dog New Tricks?
shoemonster replied to heapha's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
OH has just started obedience with our inlaws 11 year old dog and she is doing well I don't think it's ever too late -
To fix the baby gate issue you could attach cardboard over the rails so he can't get through and can't see thorugh Our guys go everwhere with us when we're home and as a result when we go to work they sleep all day I walk them in the morn to tire them (which I know you can't do) but if I can't I walk them at night You could try the treat balls that let treats fall out, they might cure a bit of boredom Telling them off when they bark will never stop them from barking long term (I know it's frustrating though) Aparently teaching bark on command is a great way of stopping barking, not sure how it would work with your guy but might be worth a go (idea being if they learn to bark on command there is no benefit to barking unless asked) oh, can you put a doggy door to outside or a run? That would give him the option of being in or out and may be fun for him

Had a good look at moll's eye and can see the extra eyelash but it is sooooooooo fine Her other eye has a thicker one but it does not cause a problem I wonder if it is the eye lash causing it or something else I'm going to give her another night and then book er at the vet if it's not looking good tomorrow Compared to any of the pics I can find, hers seems almost non exisistant

What Type Of Food Reward Do You Use?
shoemonster replied to Embellish's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
yep obedience school I use smelly cabana but at home I use any smackos or cat treats or similar as they is less attention required at home! Am at the moment weaning eddie off treats which is a pain as he is completely food obsessed! Molly is being trained with far less treats to make it easier later! -
That's great news for Kasper I am going to try to have a good look at Molly's eye tonight (if she will sit still!!!)
