Teeny Flyball Brag For My Foster, Darcie
shoemonster replied to sidoney's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
How exciting! Well done I am just starting to teach my 2 "around" for flyball and when OH is home a restrained recall, its lots of fun -
Woohoo!!!!! See why I love clicker so much?
-
Yeah i think it would be more trouble than its worth to try to change "yes" lol Its bad enought remembering to say Good girl instead of Good boy :D And then theres Good dogs if they are both being good, hurts my brain I used to end up saying "good boy girl whatever" half the time
-
I wouldn't use a different bridge as they will know that it only means something if you are saying it while working with them Just the same as if I say yes in answer to a question to a person the dogs don't think they will get a treat
-
Using their names works for me too, like Eddie stay, Molly come, etc for every day things like feeding one outside while the other waits inside Plus its good to train one at a time so the other can practise being tethered and practise wiating their turn
-
I have 2 dogs, and have found that I normally tether one dog while working with the other or they won't concentrate I use clicker for both and the same release and bridge word, and find that they have learnt that if I'm not working with them then the clicker or bridge doesn't mean anything I may hit problems later if I want them working together but I figure they're never going to be in the ring with me at the same time so it should be ok

lol I started doing free shaping with Ed yesterday after Stella was tellign me about it, so funny watching him tryng to figure out what I wanted him to do I gave him a ball and a bucket and after a few minutes he was picking up the ball, and also seperately putting his head in the bucket reliably Free shaping for those who don't know, is clicking good behaviour as the dog does it, so say I put a bucket out for Ed, I don't ask him to do anything If he looks at the bucket I CT, if he sniffs the bucket I CT, he puts his head in the bucket I CT, he then realises that every time he puts his head in the bucket he gets a CT so has figured it out!

i just typed out this humongous post about it and the computer dropped out So peeved oh well Clickers are fantastic, the dogs learn so quickly You need to practise your timing first though, I am crap with names but someone told me its like taking a picture, you need to click right at the perfect moment, ie in a sit you would click the second the bum hits the ground You also need to charge the clicker before you start (only the first time, never again, they remmeber!) so the dog knows what it is To do this you CT (click treat) for no reason, over and over until the dog realises that click means treat To test this you can click when the dog isn't looking, and they should spin around expecting a treat! Always give a treat when you click even if you click wrong, or it will lose its value Hope this helps for a start, there is other good stuff in H20's thread in training too

I thought i could feel my ears burning!
-
Yeah the people she stalksd are very important people
-
Be careful she stalks in advance too, just wait til you come to Westernport
-
In what way are you changing it? It shouldn't upset anything using part of the food for her dinner for training Just thinking that she doesn't like any other treats but she must like the food she gets for dinner
-
You can always use part of her dinner for training
-
I use both the clicker and yes so that yes is still ok if I don't have the clicker But the clickers are small enough that you can carry them around too, and I put one on a hairband around my wrist if we are out training so it is close Edited to say what Monir said, that you only use the clicker while teaching the behaviour
-
Yeah she will The advantage with the clicker is that it is the same every time (where our voices and tone can vary) and it is easy to do immediately I love teaching things with clickers, its so fast
-
I used to train with smoked chicken breast but I found I ate too much of it myself!
-
Just don't leave it in your pocket by mistake I normally buy the big roll of it and cut it all up and freeze it in ziplock bags so we always have some for training
