Nooooo to Novice heeling on lead!!! LOL! I HATE the lead ;). Hate it, hate it, hate it I love speak on command - so does my dog Why? Don't you walk your dogs down the street on lead? After all it's not that hard to have a lead in your hand unless you have two left/arm hands and two right arms/hand..
-
That the scores for CCD and Novice class is altered to reflect the rest of the class level (CCD CD and CDX) EG Stand for Exam - 20 points Recall - 30 points Heel on lead and Heel Free 30 points (currently Heel Free in Novice is 40 points) But the biggest thing that I would like to see is that novice heel work is still on lead.. after all you need to be able to walk your dog down the street on lead. But in whole the current rules are ok, and with the rule review happening, things will slightly change again. I love to hear a dog doing Speak on Command at Trials, and a few of my friends do this exercise in UD.. I too, have done both Directed retrieves and Speak on Command in UD.

Yes that is correct. Have fun at your classes on Sunday

It depends on you, your dog and how much you have trained for it. With my boy we trained for only five weeks before we trialled in encouragement (I only entered him for the restricted to breed trial) and passed. For those newbie's, encouragement was pre CCD ( has only been a class since 2006 ) and it was scored out 130 with a passing mark of 115 or higher.

No there is no age limit to when your dog will be awarded a performance title, just that they are over 6 months of age to compete (but remember that with Agility your dog should not be jumping before they are twelve or more months of age to allow the growth plates to close). And if you get a pass for each of the trials that you enter over the 2 consecutive weekends, you can apply for your dog's title straight away. So there is no time frame.
-
Also you can only gain two passes under the one judge for your title.. so lets say you have two passes under Mr Joe Blow, you cannot enter under him again . You must enter under Ms Smarty to get your title hope that this helps too

Not sure if this is the right answer, but most trials you start with UDX followed by UD, then the other classes follow unless scheduled differently... Then you shouldn't have too much trouble with the seek back. As Seven gets more experienced she will start to search for the fresher scent. How is every thing else going in your UD trianing? Cheers

Have fun down there, won't you and bring back some more titles. cheers

Never say Never Gayle, you never know what is just around the corner And Congrats to Benson and you on gaining your ET title It is something that I will never be able to do my self as I don't ride bikes or jog. cheers

Wangaratta K&odc August Trial
kallistar replied to Silvawilow's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I'm not SW, but when the agility used to be held on 2 afternoons we used to stay at Wangaratta North Family Motel just out of town. They used to have a website, not sure if it is still current but you could google. They also used to let the dogs stay IN the rooms with you (which was why we loved it) but as it was on the market, there may be a change of management so this may not still be the case. Worth a try though. Thank you.. I had stayed at the Millers Cottage and loved it, but they are booked out for this weekemd, according to their website. I am still trying to concvince someone to come up to share the accomodation costs with me. but............... Thank you too SW for your suggestions. -

Wangaratta K&odc August Trial
kallistar replied to Silvawilow's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi Newfie, Yes you can enter your Newfie in CCD at Wangaratta's trial ( or any other trial around Australia). And you should be able to use your entry forms that you have. Just remember to put on the entry what class you would like to enter, and any other info that is required. Pop it in a self addressed envelope for a reciept and put it in the post. It is a lovely trial and when I have gone up there in the past have really enjoyed the breaky that they put on for the competitors ( I hope that they still do) Have you got any passes with your Newfie yet? Cheers -
Have PM you..

Hi, are you triaining for UDX ? If so try slowing down and verbalize the position/s that you want from your dog and as soon as they comply, heavily praise your dog.. Remember that you can use either a voice or signal for the positions but not together in this exercise

Problems With 20 Meter Retrieve
kallistar replied to lovemesideways's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Yeah I'll try that today and see how it goes. The retrieving is for a Assessment. I'm doing the NDTF certificate and I need him to do 2 tricks at least 3 times in a row. I'm placing it so I can make sure its actually 20 meters away, thats a requirement of the assessment. I think I may have just made it too boring, so hes excited once and then the after that, not so much. HI JenIsAwesome, What is the critera that NDTF require for this? Do you have to have him retrieve to hand? If he is spitting it out and not presenting to hand, you will have to go back to square 1 and reinforce (with heaps of positive rewards) the hold, Swap the dumbell for a treat/toy/tug when he releases it to your hand .. as for the retrieve, again do this in baby steps, heaps of praise/rewards for retrieving the dumbell, Have some one else place the dumbell out for you, calling out to your dog and you release him to the dumbell and as soon as he picks it up (this depends on your dog and how well he understands to bring to hand) call him to come back to you.. when he reaches you, take dumbell and a BIG JACKPOT for doing what you want from him... but remember every thing in baby steps. But don't praise him for spitting the dumbell at your feet, pick it up and place it back in his mouth and step backwards calling him again, and get him to present to hand, reward when he does...Remember BABY STEPS and always finish on a high.. -
Problems With 20 Meter Retrieve
kallistar replied to lovemesideways's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi JenIsAwesome What sort of retrieving do you want to do? Is it for field retrieving trials? Obedience trials? Or just for fun? Need to know this info too as it will help with your training. And why are you placing the item to be retrieved? Is he retrieving to hand? Have you gone too far to quick? If this is the case back up to where he is doing the exercise well and build it up slowly. -
Nice retrieve dogdude. Do people prefer wooden or plastic dumbbells and why? I let the dogs choose, but I prefer wooden dumbells as I tend to zap my dogs with static electricity with the plastic ones. The other reason is that I can get a wooden d/b to fit my dogs mouth better as they can be made to order with different size bits/ends ect. I was helping someone who owned a chi x who couldn't see with the plastic ones but when she got one made just for her, Bingo she was much happier Also on this subject how many people teach their dogs to return over the solid jump no matter where the dumbell lands?

Obedience Trial Ring Craft - Tips
kallistar replied to Ptolomy's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
That when they are at a trial, to not only check in at the trial secretary's office to pick up their numbers, but to find where their ring is and check into the ring to get any scratchings from the steward when the boards go out (usually 10 mins before the trial begins). Find out if possible who is in front of them (I like to know at least the 2 people in front of me) Be ready to answer the steward call , 'cause remember 3 calls and you're out... And if possible to get your dog to "empty" before you go in the ring. Make sure that your pockets are empty of all food. And that there is nothing jangling around that can be taken as a training equipment/reward As mentioned in another post, dress appropertally for your dog, have nothing flapping in/around their face. -

I read something about that on the CAWA site, can you explain what it involves please? You're basically assisting the judge, and can do things like calling up the next person due in the ring, taking the lead from the handler, being a figure 8 post, taking the dumbell/scent articles/etc from the handler at the gate and bringing them to the ring when required, and so on. Good way to get up close! If you're with an obedience/agility club, you can let the trainers know you'd like to help them out with any trials they might hold. I'm helping out with the fundraiser agility trial this Friday night, as well as have volunteered to help 3 nights of the 4 at the Western Classic in March (I hope to actually compete one of the nights so don't want to have both things to concentrate on!) Yes this is a good way to get up and close and learn heaps. Just another thought on stewarding for other states... do you have to be a member of your states controlling body to be able to steward in an official trial? I can't remember, but I am pretty sure that you do here in Vic. I've been wondering what is the best piece of advice you can give someone who is going to trial? Eg, stuff to take, etc For those that are going to start and compete this year... good luck.

That is good to hear that Leo is doing well with this. And wash them from time to time.... in plain water. Don't use deteregent (don't laugh as people have) I remember when I first started with Tux, my instructor put the whole set out and my face dropped a mile. She said to TRUST YOUR DOG. Gave me wood article and told me to "scent it' put it in the pile and then sent Tux to get it.... which he did.. and brought the right article back to me each and every time. Did this every week and then started the metal and leather. It is not the way that I teach Scent Descrim to others. I teach it the way that Ptolomy has suggested to Rubystar.

Good advice from Ptolomy. build it up slowly and praise heavily for the right article brought back to you.
