Groomers In Here Please
ShesaLikeableBiBear replied to OhMarley's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Unless the coat is so badly matted that grooming the matts out would be painful for the dog we would NEVER clip a sheltie or other double coated breed. Perhaps explain to the owners that the coat acts as an insulator against both cold and heat. It really also depends on whether or not the owners can be bothered grooming them regularly which unfortunately is not usually the case. -

Panda has a thyroid problem, his T4's were down to 4 now on Thyroxine. At one point the lethargy and lack of excericse tolerance were put down to a heart problem. He has seen a cardiologist but it is all related to the thyroid. He has lost 1.5kg since being on Thyroxine. His itchy skin problem (dry and flaky like dandruff) has been helped enormously by a weekly bath in Malaseb

Keeping out fingers crossed Was at Manly Vet Clinic three weeks ago and they had had 36 tick cases that week

Puppy In The Show Ring For The First Time!
ShesaLikeableBiBear replied to goldenclare's topic in Puppy Chat
Ask your breeder for tips on presentation, grooming, etc more for the future than your first show. As a puppy she will be excused certain behaviour. Let the steward know you are new to showing. This site may help. http://www.dragonflyllama.com/%20DOGS/Writing/confstack.html -
Have been feeding Orijen for a month, they are doing quite well on it, but not as happy with it as Nutro which of course is no longer avail here. Some sloppy poohs and smelly which was never the case with Nutro, nor with Ziwipeak.

Panda has had dry flaky skin for sometime now, partially caused by a thyroid problem. He is bathed weekly in Malaseb with remarkable results.

Best Camera For Dog Photography
ShesaLikeableBiBear replied to Lemonlime's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
Yes the body only is as stated with NO lenses. This allows you the chance to then get what lenses you need. Have the Canon 400D. Here are some action shots taken with a 100-400mm. Am starting to dabble with Photography but so far have chickened out on manual operation, (silly when its digital and you can delete unwanted images ) these are on Auto. A great book which has been mentioned in other threads is Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson which must sit and swot :nahnah: -
Science Diet Vs Orijen?
ShesaLikeableBiBear replied to becky2828's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
As Miranda has posted already there is NO contest/comparison between the two. We used to feed Nutro but as it is no longer avail here, we have recently switched ours to Origen. -
We have been feeding Origen for the last week and thus far all going well. The health of our dogs is important to us and would doubt very much that feeding one giant breed would cost any more (probably less) than six shelties. We continue to keep a supply of Ziwipeak here. :p

Just Found A Lump On Her Tail
ShesaLikeableBiBear replied to InspectorRex's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Panda had a lump about the size of a small fingernail come up on the base of his tail last Friday, firm and solid, off to the vet. It was a cyst, which was drained and had black oily gunk come out. All OK. Keeping fingers crossed for Phoebe. -

Cant Stop Scratching.........
ShesaLikeableBiBear replied to DogzRule's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Many dogs are allergic to wheat, corn and maize so check the ingredients list of the foods you feed. -
Your vet surely has a duty of care to find out if Mac is intolerant to wheat, be it by blood test or allergy tests?. Re wheat intolerance: Veterinary Notes for Dog Owners. ed Trevor Turner. p 128 "some animals develop a sensitivity to certain foodstuffs, for example wheat sensitivity in Irish Setters, which impairs the absorption of all foods" Owners Guide to Dog Health, Lowell Ackerman p259 "Irish Setters have a documented hereditary defect associated with wheat- sensitive enteropathy" Do you know of Irish setter breeders who may be able to help?. They may know how a dog has been diagnosed celiac? Had a client with a Basset whose vet diagnosed (sorry dont know how) that he was celiac. The vet came to the conclusion that his wheat intolerance was caused by the fact that he was being fed Nutro which contained wheat. Doubt that the vet had ever heard about Nutro let alone knew the ingredients :rolleyes Re IBS, Inspector Rex had a Collie Rough with IBS, perhaps pm to discuss symptoms. Another product which contains NO grains, chemical preservatives, food colouring etc etc is Ziwipeak, made in NZ.

Hypothyroidism - Dr. Jean Dodds
ShesaLikeableBiBear replied to Erny's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
This is not really of any relevance to Dr Dodd's findings but may be of some help with the vet who is refuting an analysis. Panda was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 24 Jun. T4 levels should be between 19-45 and his were 5. He is on thyroxine and had a check up after a month. His T4's are now 30 and he is a different dog altogether. Apart from the T4 levels other indications were his coat has gone dull and skin a brownish colour, (he is a bi black sheltie), he was very lethargic and his exercise tolerance was very low. It was initally thought he had a heart problem, he saw a cardiologist who recommended the thyroid tests. -

You may not be aware that Nutro is no longer avail in Australia. We fed Nutro for 7.5 years. Now feed Ziwipeak, both the daily cuisine and the canned. Our dogs are doing very well on Ziwipeak.
