Always Itchy And Dry
ShesaLikeableBiBear replied to Azzachazza's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Dermacare Oatmeal shampoo is a good general shampoo. Is her skin a normal colour?, or is it a brownish/red, is she lethargic in any way?. Is so then perhaps her T4 levels need checking.? I have a dog here who was showing the above symptoms, he has hypothyroidism and is now on thyroxine tablets. -
We had a puppy learn to use the doggy door at 6 weeks.

Vet Recommendations Please
ShesaLikeableBiBear replied to Dog_Horse_Girl's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
We were referred to Mike Shipstone for specialist diagnosis for Panda. Am sorry to say that his diagnosis was incorrect. Panda was diagnosed with follicular dysplasia, his skin was brown, he was lethargic and had basically no coat. At the time Panda should have been tested for hypothyroidism, as he was showing some classical symptoms, as described above. It was not until Panda had heart problems that a cardiologist, seven months later, asked that his T4 levels be checked. The cardiologist was surprised that he had not had this test done by Mike Shipstone. Today Panda, who is now on thyroxine, is a completely different dog. He has no signs of lethargy, no heart problems, his skin is a normal colour and he carries a huge, fluffy coat. -

Please accept my apologies if this has been posted previously, I can't see it anywhere, have posted to "In The News" as well. Deadly dog disease is the first seen in Queensland 24 Nov, 2009 03:23 PM THE first Queensland cases of a new strain of a deadly dog disease has struck in Goondiwindi. Goondiwindi vet Mac Kneipp raised concerns on Monday urging all dog owners to be wary. “We have had cases of dog parvovirus at our surgery since December last year,” Mac said. “Yet again our isolation ward is full of very sick dogs. “It is the worst possible disease to see a dog suffer. “Recently we sent samples off to be tested in the USA and to the University of Queensland, Brisbane. “The results suggest this is a new strain of parvo and this is the first time it has been described in Queensland. “No dog, no matter how old or how isolated it is, is safe from parvo. “Many of the dogs we see come off so-called isolated farms,” he said. * This is the letter informing the Border Vet Surgery to ensure dog owners kept their dogs vaccinated: Dear Dr Kneipp, Thank you for submitting two samples for our ongoing surveillance of the strains of parvovirus detected in Australia. The samples were tested at the University of Queensland. Both samples have been identified as infections with the 2b strain of parvovirus which has not been detected in Queensland previously. The Canine ParvoVirus 2b strain (CPV-2b) was first detected in Australia in 2002. This is the first time that this strain has been detected in Queensland. Parvovirus first caused outbreaks of disease in dogs in 1978. The original strain was called CPV-2. The original strain of parvovirus is now extinct and has been largely replaced by CPV-2a. Over time CPV-2a may be replaced by CPV-2b as the most common strain circulating in Australia. Could you please raise awareness of this new strain with dog owners and ensure that all pet dogs in your area are up to date with vaccinations to maximise protection against this deadly disease. Regards, Dr Peter Bracken BVSc MACVSc Technical Services Manager Animal Health Division Fort Dodge

Vets In Sunshine Coast Area?
ShesaLikeableBiBear replied to DogNerd's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yes, that's the one, it still has a grooming Salon above the surgery, Doggy Day Spa. Am sorry I don't know Geeta's surname. There are other vets in the practice but Mum has always gone to Geeta. PS The grooming salon is now run by a vet nurse who used to work at the clinic. Mimi (Mum's poodle) goes there. -

Pippin71, my Mum has a 12 year old mini poodle and "swears" by Geeta at Buderim Veterinary Clinic 137 King St. 54452288  -
We have been using Advantix for four years with our shelties and have had no issues. We currently have 7, all of whom are house dogs, some of whom sleep on my bed. Am sure if it was not effective against fleas I would know about it.

Food Recommendations Please :)
ShesaLikeableBiBear replied to Grey's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
We fed the US Nutro to our dogs for eight years prior to it being pulled from the market here. During the transitional period before it became available as an Australian made product we fed Artemis; Orijen and Dick van Patten's Natural Balance, none of which agreed with our dogs. We now feed a home-made diet on a 2/3rds basis with Nutro and Ziwipeak. -

We are hoping for a litter on 11 Dec. Hoping the broadness is not just food. We won't ultrasound at this stage, but if she continues to spread we will xray a week prior. She is a maiden. -
Nutro Dry Food
ShesaLikeableBiBear replied to Oscar (AmBull)'s topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
We fed the US made Nutro to our dogs from 2000-2008, and weaned litters on it, with good results. We fed Chicken and Rice, Lamb and Rice and Senior. During the time when Nutro was pulled from the market here, and prior to it being made avail. as an Aussie made product, we fed Orijen, Artemis and Dick Van Pattens Natural Balance, none of which we were happy with. We also fed Ziwipeak which we are more than happy with, but given its $$$ value, it is now not economical to feed seven dogs. During this transitional time we also started our dogs on a home-made mix of minced chicken frames, pasta, yoghurt, linseed and veges. etc etc We currently feed 2/3rds of our home made mix and 1/3rd Nutro/Ziwipeak. Our dogs are doing well on what we now feed, healthy/shiny coats, firm stools etc etc. -
Feeding A Puppy Adult Dog Food
ShesaLikeableBiBear replied to RallyValley's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Can't speak for Eagle Pack, but have fed Nutro for nine years and am more than happy with the results. During the time when Nutro had been pulled off the market here and prior to it being produced in Australia we fed Orijen, Artemis and Dick Van Pattens, none of which suited our dogs. We have fed Ziwipeak and are happy with the results, but it is expensive to feed seven dogs We now feed 2/3rds chicken mixture which we make up and the other 1/3rd Nutro. When we travel it is just Nutro. -
Feeding A Puppy Adult Dog Food
ShesaLikeableBiBear replied to RallyValley's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
As Saggitarian has mentioned Large breed puppies require the correct ratio of calcium to phosphorus which is not usuaally found it the adult formula. If you follow this link it will give you a better explanation as to why to feed a formula specifically for large breed puppies. generally speaking it is recommended you keep a large breed puppy on puppy food until they are at least 12 months old. http://www.nutro.com.au/large-breed-dry-pu...n-and-rice.aspx
