Use the search feature here for Discoid Lupus. A biopsy will confirm if it is in fact D.L.E. We treated my sheltie with aristocort cream, a human cortosteriod. -
What Is Concidered A 'bland' Diet
ShesaLikeableBiBear replied to CheekyMonkey's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hey, toughgirl27, in my very limited experience of having owned dogs for over 50 years (bugger age is coming through ) a bland diet as recommended by vets and others in the "know" has pretty well always been boiled chicken mixed with either rice or plain cottage cheese. In my very limited experience as well there are not too many dogs who are allergic to chicken. xxhesapandabearxx -
H/M, suggest you contact the breeder at this link, they are in W.A. and specialise in Blues. http://www.tiakinashelties.com/

I do agree with Ness to some extent, however we have had no problems with training, we have 2 who will be 10 in September and two who are 16 months. It will depend on the time which you have to devote to them.

Well done dogsqueensland a much better site than the previous one

HM now would be a good time to introduce another puppy to your family, provided you feel that the family have enough time to care for them both and to give them equal attention. If you read through the last few pages of the sheltie thread you will see that Tali has recently added a puppy to her family, I think Jess (the older of her two) is about 2 years old and the puppy approx 6 months now.

PM dates of your shows and hopefully we can work something out soon.

Good Recepies
ShesaLikeableBiBear replied to GoldiesRgr8Poodles2's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Turkey mince at $3.99-$4.99 seems very expensive. We use minced chicken frames which we get from Lenards at $1.25/kg, buy one get one free so in essence it is $.625/kg. Rather than putting vegetables through the blender we use V8 vegetable juice (the original) or Woolies brand Vegetable juice which we can buy on sale for around $3.50 for 1.5 litres. To this we add Natural yoghurt, pasta, linseed or flax seed oil, apple cider vinegar and minced garlic. We feed this mixture on a 2/3rd one 1/3rd basis with Nutro Lamb and Rice, which is formulated for dogs with a sensitive skin. Nutro is available in Adelaide. http://www.nutro.com.au -
Wetting The Bed
ShesaLikeableBiBear replied to ChiggenWingz's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My oldest, who has just turned 12, had been wetting the bed in the middle of the night. She is now on Propalin and so far so good. She has had x2 USG tests which were not the best and will be re-tested this week. -

I would suggest that you contact Nicestman77, a member of these forums, he is a wealth of information, (beside being a very nice person). He has been a dog groomer for many years, and now both sells and services clippers and blades.

Nutro Natural Choice Dog Food
ShesaLikeableBiBear replied to BooBooBear's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
We have fed the tinned product to our puppies, again when it was made in the US, with no issues. Have yet to try the Australian product. Slightly OT but we have fed the Ziwipeak tins to puppies, (no issues) they are for all lifestages. -
Nutro Natural Choice Dog Food
ShesaLikeableBiBear replied to BooBooBear's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
We fed the US made product for 9 years until it was pulled from the Australian market in 2008. We have weaned 4 litters of puppies onto the US made Lamb and Rice Puppy, out of those litters we have kept four. Nutro is now made here and whilst we haven't raised a litter on the Australian product we are feeding Nutro on a 1/3rd 2/3rds basis, to our seven dogs and have not had any issues. -
Nutro. http://www.nutro.com.au/ Before Nutro was made here it was imported from the US, and there was no testing on laboratory animals. I would "presume" the same is to be said now it is made here? May be worth contacting them. Nutro comes in either Lamb and Rice or Chicken and Rice and is considered to be a super premium food.

We use human grade chicken frames, minced, which we buy from Lenards on the Sunshine Coast @ $1.25/kg, buy one kg, get one free. We found the chicken pet mince goes stinky To this we add, the vegetable V8 juice (much easier than cooking up veges and pulverising them); natural yoghurt; pasta or rice; apple cider vinegar; garlic granules and either linseed or livamol. PS Woolworth's have their own brand of the vegetable juice, works out much cheaper than the original V8

You could try dusting potato flour through, it will help reduce the discolouration.

Want To Move To Premium Kibble
ShesaLikeableBiBear replied to StevenJC's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
We have fed Nutro for 9 1/2 years and find it suits our dogs best of many of the dried products. We also have been pleased with Ziwipeak. During the "transitional" period here when the US made Nutro was pulled from the market, we tried Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance, Orijen and Artemis but they did not agree with ours dogs. Nutro is now made here. We now feed our dogs a 2/3rds diet of a chicken mince mixture which we make up and 1/3rd Nutro or Ziwipeak. As Aidan has mentioned avoid foods that have corn/maize as their first ingredient and be aware that many dogs cannot tolerate wheat either. -
Cut them in 1/2 Our shelties can't manage a whole frame ;)
