  1. Am sorry to hear about Abbi, only you will know when the time is right. This may be of some help http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=68867
  2. As mentioned in my earlier post being able to shoot a dog which has attacked another animal will depend on the area in which you live and the size of the block. We are NOT allowed to shoot on land under 41 acres, we have 40. Have you seen what a wild dog does to sheep? Much worse than what you have described, siks3, and although I have photos I won't post them as are too graphic. You can imagine our distress when we were advised we were not allowed to shoot.
  3. Here is a link to a thread re fleas which has been "pinned" http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=92212
  4. Are Sidro and Duman, one and the same person?, both joined these forums on 04/1/2011, both asking about the same dog, judging by the photos. If that is indeed the case, why is it necessary to post under two different pseudonyms?.
  5. This is taken from a fact sheet published by Moreton Bay Regional Council and am sure that it would apply throughout Australia. "Many dog owners don’t realise they are legally responsible for everything their pet does, especially when it is outside their property. If your dog menaces or attacks another animal or person, the owner of that dog may have their dog declared menacing or dangerous and be held liable for any damages or injuries if a civil action is taken." I would doubt very much that anyone is entitled to shoot a dog. It would depend on the area in which you live and the size of your land. e.g. we had a wild dog attack on our sheep in Dec 2009. We have 40 acres (16ha) and we are NOT permitted to shoot. In addition there are quite strict rules as to who is entitled to own a firearm.
  6. cowanbree, sorry to hear you are having such a hard time, I too react to fleas, so if mine had them I would be covered in bites. I know with you it's not due to humidity or the wet as you are in the deep south of NZ. Would doubt it is a reaction to food as, apart from the puppies, they would no doubt have been on the same food for some time.?. Contact allergies?, but then why would that suddenly become a problem?. Would a bath in Vetadine help?, it is for non-specific skin conditions and may help relieve some of the scratching, you can leave it on. Or Malaseb, but it needs to be washed off. Hope you can find a solution soon. :p
  7. Jemma had hotspots recently. I had taken her to the vet as they were spreading quite rapidly on her back, they shaved all the hair away, (she ended up with a mohican hairstyle ) which is important as they need to dry out, and gave her Ilium Neocort which I applied several times a day. As they hadn't started clearing after a week she was put on anti-biotics.
  8. An update from us. We have since been given a sample of Black Hawk and have now purchased a 20kg bag. Our dogs so far seem to be doing well on it, there is no question of them not eating it, it is made in Australia, great ingredients and is cheaper than Nutro. You will find two threads in here re Black Hawk.
  9. We fed Nutro Natural Choice for 10 years and have weaned all our litters onto Nutro puppy with NO issues. We are now trialling Black Hawk. Ingredients are great, made in Australia and is cheaper than Nutro. So far so good. If for any reason we decide not to continue with Black Hawk we will go back to Nutro.
  10. Yes I am an exhibitor, and no I haven't attended our local shows in the last few months as 1) I have an injury which is precluding me from attending many shows with the possibility of major surgery in the N.Y. 2) my dog who I am currently showing has ruptured his cruciate ligament 3) I was away at the time the meetings were held at the end of September. I WAS NOT ACCUSING YOU OF TELLING LIES I was merely replying to Tatzelwurm's post in which he/she stated that according to his/her buddy who works for the Council that the decision is based on where your land is, proximity of neighbours, fencing and that runs were not mandatory.
  11. We have a breeders permit. We are NOT commercial, we are registered with DOGS QLD. We are on 40 acres in Woodford, 4 km from the "township". Neighbours are NOT any closer, in fact further away, than one would expect those who are on smaller acerage closer to suburbia to have i.e. 15 dogs on 2 acres. Our house yard, where we limit our dogs access to, is approx. 3/4 acre, (we have shelties who are not by any stretch of the imagination big dogs!!) We then have AT LEAST 1.5 acres of garden in our front "yard" where the dogs, should we choose, can have access to, then 10 paddocks (NOT including our herding arenas) all fully fenced. Dog/sheep wired, whatever one chooses to term it. All our boundary fences are hot wired top and bottom, we are to say the least like Fort Knox here. NO there are no runs for our dogs, they are house dogs, and for better or worse sleep on my bed. We pooh pick twice daily. We are retired and spend 80% of our time at home. If we go out our dogs are locked inside out of habit. De-barking means that their vocal chords have been "nicked" so the pressure can't build up and be noisy to neighbours, something we had to do in N.Z. because of "complaining neighbours" before moving to QLD. Shelties can be noisy buggers!!. SO how come someone can have a licence for 15 dogs on 2 acres, when runs are NOT mandatory and the most we can have on our current licence is 8. SORRY, simply does NOT compute, if you get my drift?
  12. 12 on 3/4 acre and 15 on 2 acres, do they have full kennel facilities?. Our house yard is 3/4 acre, fully fenced, (as is the remainder of the property) dogs are house dogs, we are retired and home more often than not and our dogs are de-barked. Burpengary and Caboolture are in Moreton Bay Regional Council. I understand the applications for Breeders Permits have now been closed off. There is a thread in "Breeders" to that effect.
  13. We are on 40 acres in Moreton Bay Regional Council and have a Breeder's Permit to keep 8 with the possibility to extend that in the future. Obviously each application has been assessed on individual merits- size of property, set-up, size of dogs etc etc.
  14. Voted number three. I know of someone who has two kelpies who are never excercised, they are locked in a small area behind where they live. The most excercise the bitch has had since mid September has been one class at one show. :p
  15. , silverdog, we have the same book, seems like, as can happen, names may have been changed for the movies, my apologies to those who got their screen names correct. Phew, stonebridge, your questions are way beyond my addled brain As we have a working breed, ;) can anyone name all the ANKC working breeds recognised here and distinguish between herding and tending dogs?, and which are loose eyed and upright? To start we have Shelties who are a herding breed, upright, and a Briad is a tending breed. :D
  16. Have to be more specific Becks . What were the two breeds of dogs, and the breed of cat, who featured in the book and movie, The Incredible Journey?., and what were their names?
  17. As far as I can see in the Kennel Club Breed Standards, Pastoral in the UK is the same as working dogs here? Think about short legs
  18. Continuous. Hint working breed, or pastoral as known in UK.
  19. Our best wishes are in the thread in OT , but we forgot to say thanks for the Christmas greetings you have posted and for such a great site.
  20. Apologies, UK, includes Britain, Scotland, Wales and part of Ireland
  21. Great thread Haven't answered a question, can I ask one?. Which breed is supposed to the the oldest pure-bred in Britain?
