  1. This episode really made me cry at the cruelty. Watching that poor dog get the matted fur shaved was heart breaking. Seeing the fear and timidity of some just made me shake my head and feel so sad... What I don't understand is... the condition of some of those dogs were absolutely APPALLING. Why in Dog's name would they leave 24 dogs there? SURELY they would have had ample ammunition to take them all? I think the end result of them having been left without food or water, not being cared for (like the other 100) and the owners up and left was something even I could have foreseen. I'm sure there were reasons, however, for the life of me I just can't fathom why they left some there in the first place... Secondly... a $9000 fine? Seriously... is that all? And they are still allowed to own 3 dogs??? Someone is kidding me right? Did the judge not see what we saw - does society not care because they are just 'dogs'? Some of those dogs were so matted they looked like they had big solid tumours hanging off them... they left 24 to starve and die and the rest were clearly uncared for... there were 150 dogs in one house - 150 - how is that okay and how can someone care for that many dogs... but they are STILL allowed to own 3 dogs? WHY? I just don't get it... people that treat animals like this makes me lose faith in humans, and to have them get a little wrist slap and are free to do it again just makes it worse. Maybe it's better that I don't get it... It would probably make the situation even sadder. I was so glad to see some happy ending stories though. Especially Pippin the poodle (how HAPPY did he look - running with tongue flappin' in the breeze ) and that poor little timid boy... I cried when he was so afraid he couldn't even lift his head up... and even though he still looked timid, at least he looked happy and loved in his new home. Bless all the people that helped the dogs that did survive, and gave them a chance. Poor buggers... but as long as people are allowed to get away with it, there will always be such cases...
  2. Yep, that's pretty much what we go through here too. I find if I can get to Sasha before she gets over excited (whether that means bringing her inside or into the garage) she will remain fairly calm, sometimes even go to sleep (although if the thunder explodes loudly she may raise her head ). If I'm too late, and the crazy dog has kicked in, it will take a good 15 minutes or so to calm her down, get her to stop pacing and relax. Not sure if anyone else has tried it, but giving them a massage to distract them is VERY useful!!! Can settle them very quickly
  3. RIP Barbie... The funniest thing is how VERY proud they both look of their achievement! I think this was a premeditated attack for sure! Poor Harry, he got chewed in half
  4. Any further updates on Charlie? Hoping you may have received a more hopeful and useful second opinion
  5. I know this very well... and can sympathise. I now watch the weather channel like a hawk and try to be prepared all the time, but that's impossible... I hope you find an answer so that you don't need to do this x 2
  6. I do hope you can find someone suitable... especially someone who knows what things to look for with Cushings sufferers. As you would know, things can change and become very dangerous very quickly for a Cushinoid. Hopefully your parents dog is quite stable on medication so won't be too much of a problem. My parents just don't go away anymore they don't trust anyone enough to medicate and monitor our girl (except me but having to work full time causes a problem)... It's a risk they don't feel they can take - but it is tough on them, as I'm sure it is for your parents. Hopefully you can find someone and your parents can have a lovely holiday Good luck!
  7. I just bought a red one! Probably didn't need it, but thanks for letting us know!
  8. The OP was looking specifically for a rescue dog in another thread... Just going off the information already supplied. Yes I guess it was an assumption, but one made from past posts. It's a shame the pup is gone - it happens. When we were looking at rescues we missed out on a number of dogs that we were simply too late for, or was more suitable to another family. However, I'm a big believer that everything happens for a good reason - and it wasn't the dog for you. If I'd been successful with another dog, I'd never have had the privilege of having Sasha come bounding into our lives Stay patient, be realistic (so you don't get too disappointed if you miss out on a pup you want) and don't give up. I looked everyday for a few months. But you will find her (or she will find you) Keep at it... you WILL find a dog that's right for you and your family.
  9. I agree with PF - things can and do go wrong. What happens if this dog doesn't get along with your current dog - it's an awfully long way to bring them? If it were me, I'd wait until I found something closer that the entire family could go and meet (dog included), to make sure it meets all your requirements and lifestyle, is good with your littlies and can get on with your dog (you mentioned she does not always get along with all dogs, so I'd prefer to test first). If it is a rescue, with your OH not being overly convinced about going the rescue route again, perhaps it will be better for him to also meet the new family member before making the commitment. Just my opinion though
  10. Thank goodness... I hope he enjoys a new life of love and happiness. :D at some good news for a change
  11. I think they can... give Sasha a line up of 100 dogs, and she will without doubt be able to pick out the 1 lab in the pack... Why? Because Sasha's best friend is a lab called MJ - so she thinks every lab, regardless of size, colour, age, sex etc is a future best friend :D She just loves labs...
  12. :D I've given up expecting Sasha to return with a ball, much less actually give it up without a chase ;) I'm currently working on a 'pat' command - Sasha is quite shy when strangers try to pat her, so trying to boost her confidence by making it a command that she knows, and knows how she should respond and what is happening. Also trying to work on her recall... it's pretty decent at home... outside our home it just disappears... And also prettying up her 'heel' which she is darn almost perfect at now, bless her cotton socks.
  13. Happy birthday Furia! She has grown into a very stunning girl :D
  14. OMG... THAT'S FREAKY!! BUT, so there should be more good lookin' doggies in the world!!! Very bizarre, but also very cute :D
  15. Thanks Loraine - it sure does! Wish it was Chloe too, but she will always be the star (even without being in print) We have big paintings of Chloe all over the house, so she has her time to shine everyday!
  16. I'm another fan of Advance here - although if I run out for any reason I am quite happy to drop down to the shops and pick up some Optimum Sasha is very fussy about dry food, but enjoys (and tolerates) Advance. She also has an unpredictable tummy, and Advance has pretty much stopped all those problems.
  17. Thanks guys - we are all so happy. It's only a little picture, but for a once unwanted rescue dog - it means alot :D cvs - have sent you a pm. You will be pleased. Oh, and just to let everyone know... her name is no longer Sasha (too common). She only responds to her stage name, which is now Saaaaaarsha (said in a posh tone) The fame has gone to her head already!!!
  18. My Chloe may be old, but she's the best protection dog you could ever ask for... One day, her and Dad were out in the front yard. A little kid on a bike rode past, stopped and asked my dad for help as a gang of youths were chasing him (can't remember if they were trying to steal something from him or hurt him)... My dad didn't really know what to do, so he said that the young boy could come into our backyard behind the gate with him and wait for the gang to lose interest in him. Anyway, before they could get to the gate, the gang of boys arrived and started yelling and threatening the younger boy... Dad tried to get rid of them, but they were slowly approaching closer. Chloe strode up, placed herself between my Dad and the boy, and the gang of boys - all her hair went up, she planted her feet, lowered her head and gave out the most frightening growl I have ever heard from her... Needless to say, the gang backed off very quickly and the boy was safe to leave. Chloe is like that... if anyone in the family is having an argument with someone, or she hears raised voices, or if mums neighbour is not speaking to her in a nice tone - Chloe is the first one there, standing in protection and letting them know it is not acceptable. Sasha... well, when Sash first came to us - she was more afraid of everything... so I never really thought of her as being protective, she mostly just LOOKS scary. However, if the neighbours are being turds, she is the first one there giving them her 'im warning you' bark... and if a strange man approaches us she ALWAYS puts herself between me and them and watches them suspiciously until they leave. I think it's something that most dogs just have... a natural ability to know when their family is in trouble, or needs their help. Just another thing that makes dogs so wonderful.
  19. Well she is a Ridgey x Mastiff (that's what she's microchipped as) - but she came from rescue so no one can be 100% sure. I believe the ridgey, but I think there may be a few other breeds in her mix - husky being one of them as well Thanks guys! It's really made my day to see my beautiful girl in print!
  20. The Furminator won't get ALL the hair out, but it does get the bulk out at once so you can dispose of it and not have to find big chunks of hair everywhere! It's been great for Sasha and Chloe... I got grocery bags full of hair out of them in one go... that's grocery bags full that I no longer have to vacuum up
  21. Due to Sasha's wonderful 5th place finish in the national Vote My Pet competition, her picture is in the latest Pets magazine! She is our star!! She is third down on the right Can't tell you how proud I am that she is in publication!!!
  22. My family have owned Cattle dogs for years, Chloe is my dog but I've always had mum and dad to help me with her... but my very first dog of my own, that is totally my responsibility only - is Sasha, my rescue baby. Goodness knows what breeds she is, which is why I picked an adult rescue - so I knew what their personality would be like, I knew what size and coat she was gonna have, basically I kind of knew what kind of dog she was without knowing her breed. I believe she is a Mastiff x Ridgeback, however my suspicions are a little different - I'm sure there is husky in there somewhere... I'm now a rescue convert... I just love them
  23. You've certainly come to the right place WELCOME! Hope you have fun and get lots of great info here!
