  1. Unfortunately I have quite a lot of experience in this. I have tried everything with my Mac but nothing works long term so I now just manage it. I personally found bathing made him worse and Malasab in particular burnt his skin. When Mac has an outbreak I put him straight onto pred, 15mgs a day (he is 9kgs), up the Nizoral to twice daily and put him on a course of Ceph If I catch it before it gets bad I can clear it up in under a week. I also put teabags on any sores which seems to clear them up really quickly. Have you done skin scrapings to determine if it is a yeast infection? Honestly the best thing I ever did was take Mac to see a skin specialist. I really wish I had done it years ago as I spent thousand mucking round with different things when he ran tests and was able to eliminate a lot of the possibilities. Once I get Mac clear he stays on a maintenance dose of nizoral every second to third day and last time I had 4 blissful mths without problems. Horrible isn’t it. Rappie, can you use Nizoral on cats?
  2. If these are mature dogs why are they not holding overnight? I take my troop out for last toilet and everyone holds overnight. I would suggest crating them might be in order.
  3. Very sorry to hear the news. Always hard to lose one of your babies but she was so young
  4. I have had pyo a couple of times in older bitch’s and according to my vet once they have had it, it will return. He said if I wanted to we could treat the bitch but I would have to mate her next season and then spay.
  5. Sounds very similar to what my old boy had. He was diagnosed as having irritable bowel syndrome and put on all sorts of specialized diets. Nothing really seemed to work so in the end I just started giving him 2mls of scourban daily. Never had it again. Not something I would recommend for a young dog but Brody was well into his teens by the time I decided to try this and I thought what did I have to lose. He had a far better quality of life on it and lived until 16 ½ years
  6. Need another option, 6 -12mths at most which is what I do. Personally I am not a fan of pumping my dogs full of chemicals for no need. I tend to worm the pups quite reguarly until at least 18mths but then drop it down to about every 12mths.
  7. Even without knowledge of OCD I can answer that one, every dog is different. I have multiple dogs here and feed different food to quite a few as what does well for most dogs doesn’t suit everyone. Studies do show that puppy diets that are high in protein can do more damage that good. In fact I do not feed puppy food and I do not recommend it to my puppy buyers. I was not trying to imply you had neglected your dog but perhaps the one you have now has grown at a more rapid rate than your older one? I really recommend you start a thread over in breeders asking about OCD, what can it hurt.
  8. it is largely diet related,i worked with thoroughbred yearlings on a big stud where the feed(high protein)was pumped into them from an early age.they had a lot of weanlings with it.same with dogs, they should be kept lean with puppies sometimes having to change onto a adult biscuit to slow growth. I thought so. My friend who has a wolfhound had it with one of hers and she had to change to adult food, cut his weight a lot and limit exercise to toilet breaks only on lead and he came mostly right
  9. OK, I only have a very vague recollection about OCD but isn’t it diet related, too much protein and the dog growing too fast? Can’t it be corrected with a diet change and limiting all exercise if you catch it early enough. I would change the heading to OCD and get some of the large dog breeders in here that know all about OCD.
  10. I think it is an individual thing rather than a breed thing. I have had shelties that range from 4mths to 11mths. I much prefer the 9mths plus. Very hard to keep a decent coat when they are cycling every 4mths
  11. I have told this one before but I think it is worth telling again. I have a friend who has bred GSD for 30plus years. She read give a dog a bone and was totally converted so converted her kennel to BARF. She had a litter, the bitch was BARF fed and so were the puppies, it was done properly exactly as per the book and she had to pts the majority of the litter with elbow and hip issues prior to 12mths, in fact 2 were at 3mths. Because she is a glutton for punishment and a lot stronger than me she repeated the exact mating but this time she fed them the way she has for 30 plus years, about 60% dry and the rest meat and bones. Everything else was done exactly the same way she had for the prior litter and she got excellent hips and elbows I am not saying BARF caused the bone issues but you do have to wonder
  12. Is it ok for cats? I have been battling ear infections in ny cat for a while now and would like to try this
  13. I like to play it safe with lumps. Unless it is clearly a fatty lump and if it doesn’t go away in the next 10 days I would have it removed. Some will say have it biopsied but my preference is removal
  14. I personally would have babies inside at least until they settle into their new home but if you are going to have them outside they really need a good sturdy kennel. A crate will not offer enough protection from the elements. I prefer a sturdy wooden one over the plastic ones and yes I would get 2
  15. Why would it save problems? You do understand this is cutting the toes off don't you?
  16. What about visiting a chiropractor or perhaps even acupuncture - it really works wonders
  17. Not sure if it would be worth it for one dog, certainly you would at a minimum have to buy the 15kg bag. I go through about 2 bags a mths so while I wouldn't say I buy in bulk, it is enough.
  18. With all the food I feed I buy direct from the importer and it is posted to me so if you are interested in a certain food just find the importer. I find it hard to believe Canidae wouldn't be in Auts, it is a leading USA brand and is fortunately not affected by the recall as all ingredients are from USA
  19. I used to feed Canidae and was very happy with it but thought I would try Nutro for a while. I think Canidae is better and the price is comparable so I am swapping back to it
  20. I must say scary times. I feed Canidae which I have been very happy with . Their website contains a big disclosure saying they are not affected but then so did the likes of Natural Balances website right up to the day the FDA announced the recall. I am very tempted to feed something like Coprice and supplement with BARF, at least then I know 100% they will not be affected by any contamination. I do wonder if you can trust any of the big companies to be totally honest when it will cost the millions of dollars to be
  21. What about Coprice? My friend feeds it, I wouldn't call it super premium but it is 100% Australian made - isn't it?
  22. I had one that used to do this but my vet squirted antibotics into the tiny holes in there and they are now fine. I asked him the theory behind it and he said I have no idea but it seems to work so maybe worth a try
  23. Dog run with roof and concrete footings so he can't dig out is the only answer. He shouldn't be allowed out loose in the yard when you are not home
  24. Yup, I use the Tea tree oil all the time for hot spots - the oil not the lotion. It dries it out and only seems to need 1 application. Use very sparingly though as it can be toxic in large amounts
