  1. I also do it all right from getting the sack off to doing the cords. I also don't leave them for at least 2-3 days
  2. My current girls are Millie Bree Asya Chilli Zuri Quest Past names Kellie Kayla Portia Rena Tegan I think I have better dog names, my bitch names are a bit boring
  3. When I have puppies looking for homes I personally advertise on a site called Trademe. It is full of byb and puppy farmers and I have to say I think my add stands out not only as quality puppies but also as a breeder who stands behind their puppies and makes the rest of them look bad. Most of my other fellow breeders wouldn’t dream of advertising there but I have had some wonderful homes from it. Things happen when you are breeding and quite often you will go from a list of buyers desperate for puppies to nobody by the time you have puppies to sell.
  4. I have no issues at all with people wanting a certain temperament, colour or sex but when they start getting down to fine detail such as must have a full white collar and even front socks I tend to give them a miss. My experience with those type of people is that they are impossible to please and quite often cause issues at the last minute or down the track. Also re the show home vs pet home I pick the best home regardless of whether they are going to show it or not but if they are both great homes I would pick the show home. In the end I am breeding for the betterment of the breed and if it is a nice dog it would be a shame to do otherwise.
  5. Mine wasn't but he didn't grind anything just stitched it back on. All up including bandage changes it cost just under $600 which was very cheap. However I must add that the vet may have been feeling extremely sorry for me because on the same day I also had a c-section done and I have been dealing with quite a sick dog who has been in and out getting tests done and on drips etc. Bree was the final straw! ETA Just occurred to me we are talking about different ligaments, Brees was in the back of the hind leg and had detached at the bone by the hock
  6. Nothing like a newfie pup. It is a breed I have always loved and to be honest if they didn't drool I would have one
  7. Bree was operated on just prior to Xmas for torn ligaments in her rear leg. She spun out going too fast round a corner (typically Bree) and tore the ligament completely away. I chose to operate straight away as she is only a small dog and my vet said they had very high success rates esp if done straight away before scar tissue had a chance to build up and would prevent or at least minimise issues later on. Complete cage rest for 3 weeks and just in the last week she has been out for limited periods under very close supervision. Considering she is not a restful dog it has healed well fingers crossed and hopefully will not cause any further issues
  8. I have had it with old dogs and it just comes right on it's own. Can't say I have ever heard of it in a puppy.
  9. I have kept a dog that was late becoming entire (6mths) and had no problems with his progeny. From the only litter old enough to be bred his daughter produced 3 entire dogs and his sons litter is currently 4 weeks and with a very quick feel I can say 2 of them are entire already. i think in his case they just needed to get a little bigger and weigh more. I think there is a difference between being able to feel them and being fully descended. If I can't feel them by 10 week max I let them go but if they are right down I am happy to give them a bit of time
  10. I don't think you can have a hard and fast rule like that. If I did I don't think I would have any males here, don't think I have ever had them right down at 8 weeks. Personally if I can feel them they have always came down so I give them time
  11. It wouldn't worry me. My breed is often late in becoming fully mature and as long as they are under 6mths I will show them
  12. I have had 2 dogs on long term pred use, 5mg once a day for a 6-8kg dog and at times twice a day. One was for autoimmune issues including skin and the other cancer, it gave her 18mths of quality life. Other than an increased appetite I can’t say I noticed any significant side affects. We did run full bloods every now and again to monitor it
  13. I have to disagree too. Quest knows getting stuff off the bench is not viewed favorably but can’t seem to help herself. Just tonight I wandered through the kitchen and she shot past me at 100miles an hour and out the dog door. She had been eating stuff off the bench and heard me coming, I had no idea until after she shot outside
  14. I thought I would share some pictures of my babies at 2 1/2 weeks
  15. Personally as long as someone is doing all the relevant tests, is prepared to 100% stand behind their puppies for life and is breeding for the betterment of the breed rather than just to have puppies I don’t have an issue with it. My one concern is that by not showing how are you going to be experienced enough to determine if your girl is of sufficient quality to be bred from? I used to think my first sheltie was the best thing ever bred. 25yrs I still think he was but can now recognize that it was best he was desexed. I would be looking for an experienced breed mentor and having your bitch assessed. ETA Breeding is not easy, read the December thread for litters due and know that this type of thing happens to most breeders at some time. You put your heart and soul into the litter and lose puppies and in some cases even the bitch. It really is a lot less grief to buy in.
  16. The first couple of days I do at least sleep in the room but as long as Mum is doing her job after that I leave her to it. I haven't to date (touch wood) lost a puppy via this. The biggest threat is making sure they are all getting on and actually feeding rather than just having their mouth in the right place. I have shelties ETA I do have the first week off work in case I need to help. Sometimes it has been a full on time and other times it is just a matter of watching them grow
  17. I would go and get it, pop it in the garage
  18. I would like to be able to say that but unfortunately there just aren’t that many lines in shelties that meet all my criteria’s and free whelp. Is very hard to breed a decent sheltie, I don’t do ai’s, or any of the other artificial things but yes I have a line that has a history of c-sections. Difficult question, do you really give up the type and style of dog you love and have bred for many years for an inferior dog just to free whelp?
  19. I don't do it, in fact to be honest other than holding a weak puppy on to his mother and making sure the other puppies don't knock him off I very rarely supplement at all. I have bottled fed puppies for 2-3 weeks when I first started breeding but almost without exception the ones not up and going within 24-48hrs either die later on or have something serious the matter with them.
  20. Any mature dog that leaves this house(and I have to admit there haven’t been many) is desexed prior to placement as do most breeders I know. An easy solution to your problem
  21. I may have read what you have written incorrectly but do you really mean in the 8mths you have had the puppy you haven’t once sent her a pic or update. If so I feel very sad for the breeder concerned. As a breeder I am responsible for ensuring my puppies live a wonderful life and keeping in touch with them is just part of that.
  22. We have babies. My shelties were born today by c-section. I have 4 boys and 1 girl, all doing well so far touch wood.
  23. Mine has done that a couple of times. Never caused any issues but I do keep a very good eye on them
  24. I am so sorry to hear this, a breeder’s worst nightmare. It is always disappointing to lose puppies but absolutely devastating to lose your girl. Thinking of you.
