Add pumpkin if she will eat it. Adds bulk and makes her regular, works wonders

I was wondering if anyone has every had an experience with a Oesophageal stricture that causes vomiting due to the blockage in the throat? If so was it easily resolved and did it reoccur and why did it happen in the first place?

I know how you feel noopy as my dog has just spent 2 weeks at the vet when all I wanted was to bring him home. Cowan didn’t eat for 12 days, had 3 surgeries and ended up with peritonitis so was a very sick dog. While he isn’t out of the woods yet (has reflux issues) he is home now The truth is she is better off there. She will be supervised and they will pick up things that you won’t. She will also be able to rest more at the vet without constantly looking for her owner. Good luck, I know how stressful it is

Owning Multiple Entire Dogs Without Kenneling Arrangements?
cowanbree replied to mr.mister's topic in Breeders Community
It is not fun but basically I keep the bitch up the front of the house and the only time she is out is when I am there to directly supervise her and the male is crated in another part of the house -
Not 100% sure it is reflux but given he can eat more on an empty stomach ie 2-3 mouthfuls vs one and the fact that once it is in his stomach it stays there it does lean towards that. The vomit does contain small amounts of food but for the main part is froth. He only brings up the last mouthful or at most 2 vs all the food in his stomach and doesn’t vomit at any other time. He is very well otherwise, hungry, active and toileting normally. Taking him back tomorrow to put barium down him and then x-ray just to make sure there isn’t a blockage. Very frustrating. He has been though so much. Eta I am currently feeding him mushed up K9 natural. It is low protein at 10% and low fat 12.5% and by adding a bit of hot water is almost a liquid. Prior to this obstruction he has never had anything wrong with him in his life.

I hadn't thought of the probotics. Will try that. The issue is even feeding extremely bland food he can only have a mouthful of food at a time or he vomits. It is very frustrating as he is otherwise so well. At the moment I am feeding him one mouthful every 15minutes as often as I am home but I can’t do that forever and he is getting so frustrated as he is hungry

Thanks. Cowan has had several panels of full bloods done in recent weeks. Would this show up in them or is it a specific blood test?

I have a sheltie who has been extremely ill over the last 3 weeks with a bowel obstruction and peritonitis. After 3 operations and weeks of intensive care he is very well within himself, very bright and seems completely normal but is vomiting his food. Seems to be able to eat on an empty stomach but after that he vomits some food but mostly salvia. Vet thinks he is suffering reflux. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this and how it was dealt with?

The frozen is a lot cheaper than that. Works out at about the same as doing it yourself and a lot less hassle

It sounds to me as if she has a partial bowel obstruction. Having just been through it myself I would urge you to get this dog to the specialist.

Ear-gluing - A Different Question Than Stitchs
cowanbree replied to Trisven13's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have shelties and as a matter of course I glue ears at around 3mths to get them through teething. The vast majority of shelties do need some type of assistance to get the ears just right. I used to let them be more natural and only glue if I had to but then I would get ears that weren't even or slightly higher or lower than I wanted so now I just glue them all. I don't really see ears as a big issue, they are fit and healthy dogs with no sight, hip or temperment issues. I also trim nails and feet which is no different -
Ear Glueing - How Successful Is It?

No hard and fast answer. I just bred a bitch with terrible ears to a dog whose mother had bad ears also. I expected to get problem ears but no issues at all in the entire litter of 5 puppies. -
Ear Glueing - How Successful Is It?

I just glued my puppies ears tonight for the first time. They are 12 weeks old. The glue comes out in about 10-14days and I would do it at least 2-3 times before leaving it a couple of days to see how it has taken. Generally ears set at around 10-12mths If gluing doesn't work after 2-3 times I would then brace, depends on the ear -

I glue and brace most of my shelties. In the big scheme of things not really a huge issue -
In a perfect world all breeders would take back their puppies but in reality sometimes it isn’t possible. Very strict dog numbers in most places mean adding an extra at little to no notice is impossible for a lot of people. I would like to think that all breeds at least assist in the rehoming even if they don’t physically take the dog back.. Having said that the breeders who think the puppy is not their responsibility once they are sold should give up breeding and unfortunately I know a lot like this. Don’t know how they can bring a puppy into this world and not care if he is having a happy life.

Outside is not really suitable for newborn puppies. They tend to chill and die very easily. Perhaps pop her in the bathroom or laundry. She will keep the puppy clean for the first 3 weeks so you only need to worry about changing the bedding a couple of times a day.
-
What I have done is section my yard so there is a small area off from the back door that the dog door opens into. They can't see a lot so it doesn't allow them to bark at everything but they can still go to the toilet. They tend to spend most of the day inside.
-
I think it is up to you to train your dogs not to bark. If she is in her own back yard and isn’t throwing things or taunting your dogs I don’t really see that she is doing anything wrong.

Still could be a partial blockage, that is what Cowan has. Has been going on for 6 weeks. Eating on and off, seemed ok but not 100% and then started vomiting last weekend
-
Hope he comes right, it is so worrying. I have one with similar symptoms in at the vet currently. He has a bowel blockage
-
Normal although some are worse than others. My Asya ate about 10% of her normal rations the entire time until the last week where nothing passed her mouth. She was extremely skinny but once the puppies were born she started eating normally and no further issues
-
I have just had to do the same thing myself but in my case I put it off a week. I know the family was disapointed but what is best for the puppy is the most important thing. They should however keep in contact

Just to be clear it is the frozen I am using not the freeze dried. Have never tried that although it would be handy for show eekends

I looked the bill up. I got 40kgs delivered for $262.60 which is $6.50kg. That is brought direct from the factory so no mark up
-
No my skin boy is 100% K9 Natural, anything else and he has a break out. I have to pay freight on top of that so it works out at around $6kg. Not as cheap as some foods but it is an easy BARF Also meant to add everyone I know who has tried it likes it. Only bad point is the price
