Thanks, I have been advised to use it by a skin specialist to resolve my itching issues and he assures me it is sheltie safe so it must be a modified version. Not a lot of options for shelties unfortunately.

Does anyone have the dose rate mL per kg for revolution?
-
While I think it is fine to check them out I would only do it after I had sused them out over the phone and told them I was going to do it.
-
I have but he thinks I should only use the spot on treatments and that if this worked more people would know about it which I take to mean he has never heard of it.

Does anyone with a herding breed use Permoxin on thier collie type dogs. I have shelties and would love to use it but not sure if it is safe for them.

Small Dog - Companion For Border Collie Male (4yrs)
cowanbree replied to peto2710's topic in General Dog Discussion
There is a big difference between an outside dog and one that spend some time outside, mine do as well but they are happiest when they are with their people where ever they may be.. An ideal situation for a sheltie would be a dog door so they have the choice. -
8 weeks here although the vet then wanted me to do 11 and 14 weeks as well when I normally only do 8 and 13 weeks

Colidal Silver in their drinking water really helps

Small Dog - Companion For Border Collie Male (4yrs)

No shelties are not outside dogs. An outside sheltie is a barking sheltie -
have suspected mites from the beginning but haven't been able to prove it. My vet has done a couple of scrapings but we haven't been able to find anything. I have never thought it was fleas as I am not getting bitten which I always do if there is even one flea in the house and I have not been able to find one single flea on any of the dogs. Hopefully doing everyone including the cats in Advocate will clear this issue up once and for all.
-
Because the formula in each is slightly different and frontline and advantage have made zero difference in stopping the itching but the advocate which I used on a few of the adults has stopped it dead
-
I was wondering how often you can safely apply the flea treatments. I have finally found one that works and want to do the rest of the house but they have already been done with advantage 24/12 and frontline 2/01. When is the earliest I can safely apply it again?
-
I don't have an issue with that at all. As with any business the more money you spend the more they value you as clients and the better discounts you get, that is completely normal
-
I wouldn't even think about doing it with a bitch, just too difficult esp with pet people but I have placed one male in a pet home with the intention of using him at stud. He was placed as an older dog so already health tested but I will only use him myself once more as they tend to play up after they have had a stud and pet people find it difficult to cope with. Generally if I have plans for a dog I keep it, only safe way to do it. In reality if you want to breed your own line you have to either have quite a few dogs or rehome - no other option. Rehoming is easier once you realise other people can and do look after them as well as you do and they will get more individual attention.

When Buying From A Registered Breeder Poll 2
cowanbree replied to SwaY's topic in General Dog Discussion
I answered no to all 3 but as a breeder I find buyers very uneducated. I am seldom asked any other questions other than do you have a puppy. My add always states the parents are health tested but only once have I ever had anyone ask anything about those tests. I have never been asked if I am a registered breeder and most aren't even that interested in papers. They just want a puppy. -
That is a lot of food. My older shelties only gets 1/4 cup of dry with the young ones getting about 1/2 cup and they are meant to be in the 8-10kg range

Scratching - Not Allergies Or Fleas
cowanbree replied to cowanbree's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Good news. I did a few of my adult dogs in Advocate and 5 of 6 now have zero scratching. The 6th one may not have got a big enough dose. Now have to wait until I can safely redo the puppies. Considering they were advantaged on the 23th Dec and Frontlined on the 2nd Jan when do you think I can safely give them advocate? -
I haven't found frontline and advantage to be working as well this year. After a battle I have brought advocate and treated all my dogs (and yes I have a few too) and also brought one of those automatic dispensers for the house that sprays every 4 minutes and things are finally looking much more postive. I also flea bombed the house which helped.

I have spayed a lot of bitchs and never had an issue apart from some age related incontinence. My vet said the trick is not to spay within 6 weeks either side of a season as it increases the risk. A lot of breeds first come into season around the 6mth range and I often wonder about the wisdom of spaying them then. Perhaps better to do it around 5mths or wait until 6 weeks after the first season. Vet ability does also come into it, my vet is great!

Scratching - Not Allergies Or Fleas
cowanbree replied to cowanbree's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
It is a bit of a mystery. One of my puppies has been in her home for a month now and she is still scratching so I don't think it is environmental. I went back to the vet yesterday and there does not appear to be any sign of parasites. He has suggested the issue may in fact be sand flies which we do have in abundance but then the puppy sold should have cleared up. So I have decided to do a bit of experimenting. I have bathed one in calendula tea, 1 in alloveen, given 1 pred, am spraying another with insect repellent and am going to do a total diet change for a couple. I don't believe it is allergies as my adults are also scratching including my aussies. I don't think it is fleas as I have spent hours going through my dogs coats with a flea comb and nothing, not even flea dirt. also they are only scratching their tummy and head which isn't usual for fleas. If it was environmental the puppy that has been home would have cleared up by now so I think we are left with 2 alternatives. Either it is diet related as she is still being fed what I feed or they have some type of mite that isn't covered by advantage or frontline. -
I wouldn't use foam. Hard to wash and no traction for puppies to crawl. I use drybed, cover the entire area for the first couple of weeks and once the eyes are open reduce the area.
-
I will offer a differing view. I regularly run 2 puppies on from the same litter and have never had an issue. They are kennelled together during the day but sleep separately at night. The most important thing is to do things with each puppy as an individual rather than a pair. I make sure they do training classes separately and have outings without the other puppy to lean on. I love that they are together during the day and have each other to play with and I have never had any issues at all with them not bonding with me. I do however think you should buy a sizable run for the two of them during the day.

I think it really does depend on your relationship with the vet. I am a breeder with a number of dogs and have been there and done that with a lot of things unfortunately. If I ring and ask to talk to the vet I am not interested in talking to the vet nurse or receptionist. I actually changed vets once because of this very issue, it was all but impossible to get past the receptionist. Fortunately my current vet is excellent. If I had to rush to the vet with every issue I had I would spend my life there. He is happy to talk to me over the phone and I only bring the pet in if he wants to do a hands on exam. I am also pretty good at assessing if they need to go in and if in doubt they do. Having said that I can certainly understand the need to screen some of the calls. I tend to treat most minor things at home without even thinking about it and can't quite believe some of the things some pet owners are in an absolute flap over.

It is a lot easier to drape a wet towel over the back with more weight over the bum
