I think everyone has their own guidelines. Personally I like to be able to feel ribs but not see them and I definitely don't want to feel backbone. I don't mind after a good run if you can see the last rib or 2 but any more and I would put weight on them. At that weight they have nice waists and my dogs are fit and healthy into old age without a lot of arthritis.

and thats why breeds are going down the crap hole... People are more worried about competition then bettering the breed, if your worried about competition then your better off getting a breed with no competition but yourself... Im not personally attacking you Zensu but that line I hear quite common with people who are looking for stud dogs and it really bugs me that people put competition before the breed... While I am not overly worried about competition I have sometimes wondered how fair it is when you have spent thousand importing and everyone thinks your competition should be able to access those same lines for the price of a stud fee? Really?

In my breed just about every stud I know has conditions on it and I am fine with that. Personally I would rather my boys not be used at stud and have refused most enquiries but definitely would have restrictions on any puppies main registered and who they went to. It is certainly not because I am afraid of competition but rather I don't like the way their dogs live or the way they are placed in homes. I want all of my Grandpups to live a great life not living shut in a crate and dragged round the ring and then pushed out the door to a pet home as soon as they are past their use by date with no regard for home suitabilty.

I had a similar situation with my last litter which was ready for Xmas as bad luck would have it. I held firm and did not let them have the puppy until after big day. I did a few nice pictures of the puppy with a red ribbon round his neck and they gave them the pictures.

My vet told me a couple of weeks in you want to be certain but 1 week is most likely enough

It is best to delay using the serious medications such as Metacam but in the end quality of life is more important than quantity. Nibbling at herself is a sure sign something is sore and time to start more serious meds. She may only need them a couple of times a week to begin with so just play round with them until you find the dose that keeps her comfortable. Personally metacam would be my choice but I have a small breed and I understand it is very expensive for large breeds.

I have just had KC go through all my dogs and found Colloidal silver really helped

Mine often don't. In fact sometimes I am struggling to make birth weight as mine often loose weight the first few days

What you have written could be Kells story. She wasn't given any medication as the vet said nothing but time will fix it. She did recover although somewhat slower than what most people have reported. It took her about 3mths to be back to a relatively normal life. She always retained a slight head tilt and was a little unsteady on lino and going down stairs but otherwise was fine. Lived on for another 2yrs and died of something unrelated. It is horrible to watch but with careful management she will be fine.

One of my personal hates is people showing bitchs that are right in, I might as well leave my male at home but at day 21 she shouldn't be attracting dog interest much anymore. I would spray her up, keep her well away from the other dogs and just bring her to ringside as needed.

I train my dogs to be handled right from the start and don't tend to leave them to it. Sooner or later you will get a difficult bitch that you need to be able to assist with and a dog that is not trained can be a real pain.

If it is a herding type breed don't use it as it is deadly to them -
Welsh Springer Spaniels/cocker Spaniels ?
cowanbree replied to cowanbree's topic in General Dog Discussion
The reality of it is they are going to get a dog and it will be a gundog so I am trying to find one that is the closest fit for them. I personally love the springers but they would be far too much in the way of coat for them. -
Welsh Springer Spaniels/cocker Spaniels ?
cowanbree replied to cowanbree's topic in General Dog Discussion
It is difficult as the wife isn't really a dog person. She loves their current Lab but he misses out on a lot as he is too big and boisterous for her. While it is important that the dog can do duck shooting is more important that it be the right dog around the house as then she would take him on her walks and even out in the car with her. Their current dog does go everywhere with my brother when he is home and is a loved family member but would live an even better life if he was able to go out and about with the wife. -
Welsh Springer Spaniels/cocker Spaniels ?

And temperment wise are they a bit more relaxed than the labs which are very high energy esp as young dogs? -
Welsh Springer Spaniels/cocker Spaniels ?
cowanbree replied to cowanbree's topic in General Dog Discussion
I am not a gundog person so don't know a great deal about them. What is their temperments like, even from a puppy? How much coat work are they? Would they do well as duck dogs? -
I am looking for a dog for my brother and would like to know a little more about both breeds from people who own them. My brother has a much loved Lab who at 12yrs is getting older. They adore him and my brother has his heart set on another Lab but the reality is they don't really fit into his current lifestyle. He has a tiny house, 2 young kiddies and a smaller section. His wife is very house proud and has found the lab too much dog and the hair a bit much. My brother is an keen duck shooter and any dog he gets has to be able to participate in this. I was considering a Welsh because it is smaller, seems calmer and wouldn't moult as much as a Lab but still be able to do dog sport. My brother is the dog person and while he loves his dog he works long hours and the main care is left to his wife. She finds the Lab too much dog and while she walks daily he is mostly left home which I find rather sad. She wants smaller, calmer and less hair and my brother wants a duck dog. They favour the Cocker but I wonder if it is too small for duck shooting and just how much coat work is involved? I know Labs have a shorter coat than both breeds but their short dense coat seems to get in everywhere and is difficult to vacuum. Any other breeds that would be suitable?

I think it is great and hopefully it will put a stop to the current trend of breeding bitchs far too young. I can't believe how young some breeders are mating their girls. Would have like to have seen shelties at 18mths though
-
Two ways to do it. Firstly push him back with your hand on his chest, he will automatically resist and when you stop pushing suddenly he is leaning forward so click and treat. The other way to do it is pulling the tail backwards. Once again they will resist and pop forward over their front. Both are better trained on the table regardless of the size of the dog and then move onto the ground as otherwise he can fidget. Plenty of praise and cue words

Don't Know How Vets And Vet Nurses Do It
cowanbree replied to jr_inoz's topic in General Dog Discussion
I would like to think for their sakes they do become at least a little hardened or it would make the job very unpleasant. I think it is the irresponsible owners that would be hard to take. As a patient one day I was in the waiting room and a women come in with a very pregnant Lab. She sat down beside me and as you do we started to chat. Apparently the dog had been in labour for a couple of days and the pups were all dead. I had just had to have a c-section 2 days prior so sympathised. She said I am getting her pts. I was so stunned all I could do was stare at her. She just shrugged her shoulders and said her breeding days are past and if she was a sheep that is what you would do so what is the difference. As a vet how would you cope with this? This type of thing would break my heart far more than pts a loved pet after they have lived a great life. -
Need Advice - Dog Forgotten Toilet Training
cowanbree replied to MolassesLass's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I too would second the vet visit but training wise I have had success using tethering with what was considered a hopeless case. The dog is either attached to me or crated. The dog is unlikely to toilet in such close proximity to the owner and you are more focussed on what the dog is doing. It is also so important that they go outside with the dog as it gives an opportunity to praise for correct behaviour rather than growling all the time which is no doubt making it worse. -
Small breed $420 for a normal hours and just over $700 for after hours

Foxy Pups 7weeks Old With Demodex Mange
cowanbree replied to cma076's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Do your adults have it? Demodex isn't contagious but sarcoptic is. -
Thanks. So using 120mg each 10kgs of dog needs .5mL ? Is that right?
